Ashcroft- Why Does he Hate the States?

by John Cole|  July 9, 20031:48 pm| Leave a Comment

This post is in: The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs

Via TalkLeft, we find a very legitimate criticism of John Ashcroft and the Justice Department:

Still licking their wounds, federal prosecutors have fired another shot at freed grass guru Ed Rosenthal, appealing the light sentence that let the convicted medical pot grower walk away a free man last month.

The motion, filed late Thursday in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, does not go into any detail about the grounds of appeal, according to Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Jacobs, who would not comment on why the Department of Justice decided to appeal the sentence.

Rosenthal, who despite getting zero jail time is appealing the felony conviction, said the government’s appeal was “not surprising.”

“They are wasting more taxpayers’ money trying to put me in prison for this,” said Rosenthal. “It would be absurd, if it were not so serious.”

Rosenthal was convicted last spring of growing pot in an Oakland warehouse. The marijuana growing operation, which supplied a dispensary on Sixth Street in San Francisco, was legal under California law and had been inspected and signed off on by Oakland city officials.

The war on your neighbor continues…

The Sky is Falling

The sky IS falling, but it is landing mostly on the heads of the naysayers who claim we have ABANDONED Afghanistan:

The simplistic way to look at what’s been happening here since the Taliban regime was vanquished a little more than 19 months ago is to focus on the broken promises, the lack of progress and regular warnings that at any moment Afghanistan could again be torn apart.

Which explains why that is all you hear coming from certain political quarters.

For a better view, drive to this mountainside village 90 minutes north of Kabul.

Come on a warm, sunny Friday, the Muslim holy day. Stop at a picnic area in a wooded plateau with a commanding view of the Shomali Plain. Chances are, men such as Haji Zahir Kargar, 50, will be there with friends and family who also have driven up from Kabul.

“Often on Fridays now, we are coming here for picnics,” Kargar, a clerk, says through an interpreter. “During the Taliban years? No!” Such entertainment was banned by the fundamentalist militia.

A foreigner visiting Afghanistan may only see problems and wonder why more hasn’t been done since the ruling Taliban fled its last stronghold, in Kandahar, in December 2001.

It takes an Afghan, someone who knows that this country was one of the world’s poorest and least-developed even before it was devastated by two decades of fighting, to see a picnic as a sign of something larger. It also takes an Afghan to note that it’s a stretch to try to compare the situation and lessons learned here with what the United States and its coalition partners now face in Iraq, where some object to the presence of foreign troops and the temporary control of their country by U.S. bureaucrats.

Several decades of war, no economy to speak of, terrible education, and the memory of the despotic Taliban rule, and still, the average Afghani is more worldly and sophisticated than the average Ny Times reporter. They recognize things are getting better- but do not gloss over the existing problems:

To be sure, Afghans don’t think there has been enough progress. And they don’t dismiss the daunting problems their country still faces:

Over the Top Rhetoric

What do Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath party officals who sat in on UN Weapons Inspection interviews with Iraqi scientitsts to intimidate the scientists have in common with Justice Department officials who sit in on interviews conducted with the 9/11 commission?

Everything, because clearly they are the exact same thing! No one doubts that should the interviewee say the wrong thing, the Justice department will quickly issue agents to go to the interviewee’s house, grab his family, send them through a wood chipper, and then put their remains in plastic bags on the porch of the interviewee’s house. George Bush and John Ashcroft are just like Saddam!

Look- I am not happy with the slow pace of the investigation, but ANY comparison between the Justice Department sitting in on interviews and the behavior of Saddam’s Baa’ath regime is simply over the top and disgusting (although Kevin’s commenters seem to not know the difference).

Doh!

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet:

Miami’s top-rated talk show host told its listeners Tuesday that Rep. Katherine Harris had died in a plane crash on Monday.

WQAM 560 AM host Neil Rogers apparently saw a posting online that said Harris had died in a plane crash Monday, while in a secret meeting with Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in Canada.

“Katherine Harris is dead!” reported Rogers on the air, “I’ve got the news story right here, it’s on the Internet. A plane crash! Yes!!”

However, while Rogers was reporting on Harris’ death, she was appearing live — and alive — on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington. Her appearance was carried live on C-SPAN.

Rogers would not comment on the mix-up on Tuesday, and he refused to release the transcripts of the program to reporters.

Rogers, of course, is the obnoxious liberal suckhole who likes to refer to Condoleeza Rice as Bush’s ‘black-haired answer mammy’ and various other racial slurs.

Are All Democrats Now Insane?

While the Republicans have thrown out all of their principles and have now become the new Democrats, spending irresponsibly and greedily creating the Prescription Drug entitlement as a new Republican vote-buying scheme, the Democrats appear to have thrown out all of their senses. For months, Democrats have been flailing about, attacking blindly, taking partisan cheapshots, and generally behaving like mean-spirited, unprincipled, snot-nosed teenagers who just had their pet Congress taken away. Apparently, this is not a phemonenon that is limited to national politics, and Democrats have become nuts EVERYWHERE:

As Gov. Mitt Romney basked yesterday in newfound hero status over his role in rescuing a family whose boat sank in Lake Winnipesaukee, irked Democrats tried to torpedo his big splash with partisan politics.

After the Herald reported the GOP governor’s rescue effort, Romney found himself in a media frenzy, including national TV headlines.

But some Democrats complained that Romney was vacationing while lawmakers debate vetoes he imposed cutting dozens of human service programs.

“There are lots of people drowning in the commonwealth right now who would certainly welcome a rescue,” said Rep. Jay R. Kaufman (D-Lexington).

They have just gone plain mad.

*** Update ***

Compare Mitt Romney’s behavior in the water rescue to the senior Senator from the same state. And Democrats are pissed about Romney. Snicker.

Let’s Clear Something Up

Everyone on the television networks seems to be tossing around this idea that Bush should or should not apologize for slavery. Let me say one thing, and let me make it clear so that the race pimps don’t come flying out of the closet accusing me of being racist. I will ABSOLUTELY not vote for Bush in 2004 if he apologizes to anyone for slavery. Period.

Bush, as the United States President, serves as my representative to the rest of the world. I feel bad about slavery- I think slavery was and is an awful practice, but if Bush apologizes, he has effectively placed a burden of guilt upon my shoulders- one which I do not deserve and will not carry. I am not responsible for slavery. I have not profitted from slavery. None of my ancestors (Quakers, mind you) profitted or gained from slavery. I have never advocated, practiced, or condoned slavery. I am as innocent as those taken into slavery hundreds of years ago- and I refuse to let Bush apologize for something I am not responsible for- I refuse to carry around some sort of ridiculous post hoc guilt for events I took no part in. People long before me must carry that burden- not me, not you, and not anyone living today.

Asian Race Pimps

by John Cole|  July 8, 20032:49 pm| 12 Comments

Here is a ridiculous question for you: How Asian is Lucy Liu?

angels09.jpg

If you are like me, you probably thought “Who cares- check out those legs.” However, the race pimps and professional victims over at the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) have some serious questions:

When MANAA got word last year that the “Charlie’s Angels” sequel would include Alex’s parents among its characters, we were all abuzz. Here, we thought, was a rare opportunity to show an Asian American family in a major Hollywood movie. Here was a chance to show them lovingly interacting like normal Americans, a chance to show an Asian American lead character drawing strength and pride from her Asian lineage. And we speculated among ourselves who the lucky Asian American actors would be to get their big break and shine alongside Liu as her parents.

Then the news hit us like a punch in the stomach: Only Alex’s father would appear in the sequel, and he would be played by British comedian John Cleese. Alex’s Asian mother would be reduced to an image in a photograph glimpsed for only one second.

The uncommon opportunity to see an Asian American family in a major Hollywood movie was torn up and thrown away.

As a finished film, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” reneges on the inclusive promise of its predecessor. As Alex’s biological father, Cleese is simply preposterous in the role. Liu is clearly a full-blooded Asian and couldn’t convincingly be half-white. And even if one accepts the idea that Alex is biracial
