Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Fight them, without becoming them!

Second rate reporter says what?

We will not go back.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

How stupid are these people?

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

NY Times Newsitorials

by John Cole|  July 8, 20032:01 pm| 3 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

Apparently Richard W. Stevenson didn’t get the message regarding idiotic statements in the post-Raines Times:

President Bush opened his African tour today with a forceful denunciation of America’s slave-holding past and a pledge to work more closely with African nations to help them build a prosperous and peaceful future.

But the limitations of his promise of more engagement were on display from the first hours of his visit. After meeting with West African leaders here, the president said that the United States would participate in their efforts to bring stability to war-ravaged Liberia but stopped short of committing American troops to a peacekeeping operation.

As usual, the Times staff knows more than anyone else- clearly they have decided the only option in Liberia is the committment of US Troops. Screw what the UN thinks, to hell with the Pentagon, to hell with the foreign policy advisors in the administration and the State Department. The NY Times says to commit troops- anything short of that should be seen as Bush hedging on his committment to help and work with Africa.

Jerks. These guys will do anything to attack Bush.

*** Update ***

Comapre the Guardian’s coverage of the same visit, in this article titled “Bush May Send U.S. Troops to Liberia.”

Bush and Regulations

by John Cole|  July 8, 20031:49 pm| 2 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

Not only is this administration and this Congress a group of irresponsible spenders, but they are also extensive regulators:

The Bush administration, philosophically wedded to the idea of smaller government, issued a record-high number of pages of new federal regulations last year, according to a study to be released today by the Cato Institute.

The libertarian think tank found that the Federal Register boasted 75,606 pages of federal regulations in 2002, up from a high of 74,528 pages in 2000, when President Bill Clinton was still in office. The surge is part of a decade-long rise in this crude index of federal regulatory activity, with the number of pages in the Federal Register increasing by 24 percent between 1993 and 2002.

“It is apparent that, in terms of page counts, regulation and agency activity are expanding,” wrote Clyde Wayne Crews Jr., the Cato scholar who wrote “Ten Thousand Commandments: An Annual Snapshot of the Federal Regulatory State.” “This is in spite of the takeover of Congress by presumably more deregulatory Republicans in 1995.”

Are Republicans the New Democrats?

It’s the Economy, Stupid

More good economic news, this time a look behind the numbers of the 6.4% unemployment rate recently released:

When the United States unemployment rate climbed to 6.4 percent last week, the highest point in almost a decade, analysts were generally glum about the prospects for job seekers. They were being far too pessimistic, however: a close look at four other economic indicators point to the end of what some have called the “jobless” recovery. These indicators show significant declines in the rate of job losses

Savage Fired

by John Cole|  July 7, 20036:56 pm| 22 Comments

Michael Savage was fired from MSNBC:

MSNBC on Monday fired Michael Savage for anti-gay comments.

The popular radio talk show host who did a weekend TV show for the cable channel referred to an unidentified caller to his show Saturday as a “sodomite” and said he should “get AIDS and die.”

“His comments were extremely inappropriate and the decision was an easy one,” MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines said.

I am curious what the hell they thought they were getting, but overall, I don’t really care, because I don’t support idiots and bigots. I am just glad he is gone- I hated the idea of him being the face of conservatism. Which, if liberals really think he is what most conservatives are like, you can understand why people like Atrios and the Talk Left crowd view Republicans as the enemy.

To His Coy Mistress

This post is in: Politics

Everyone is all abuzz regarding Sen. Joe Biden’s latest proclamation regarding the 2004 election:

With many Democrats unenthusiastic about the nine presidential candidates, two more are sizing up the race and could join the bid to take on President Bush by September. A top Democratic official says that Delaware Sen. Joe Biden is at least 50-50 on joining “and some days is 70-30.” A family member says it’s closer to “80 percent” a go. Biden thinks his experience in foreign affairs is a plus in the post-9/11 world.

Let’s clear something up- Joe Biden is not going to run seriously for President. This statement is nothing more than a proclamation from Biden that he is available to be the Veep candidate. There are enough people running out there that people are not going to go for someone who is not already committed to win the Presidency. Biden is an affable guy, and would balance out a ticket with a southern Presidential candidate, particulalry one led by someone without any foriegn policy experience (Edwards).

The way I see it right now, the leading Dems for Presidential candidate are Dean, Kerry, and Edwards. The leading veep candidates are now Biden, Clark, and Graham. The most likely combinations that I can see right now are:

Dean/Clark
Dean/Graham
Edwards/Biden
Edwards/Graham
Kerry/Graham
Kerry/Clark

I still see Dean as the frontrunner. Like I have said 1000 times, he has a number of things going for him:

1.) The anger of the fringe and the perception that he, unlike other candidates, will stand up to Bush and the evil Republicans (which I have stated before is nonsense- Democrats have been attacking Bush for 5 years now- their message has simply failed to resonate).

2.) A better than average fund-raising apparatus for a first time national candidate.

3.) No history of Senate voting or compromise that can be hung around his neck. Kerry is going to be in a heap of big trouble later on when someone finally starts to ask him some questions about something other than his heiress or his hair. He has a long voting record, he has long been a media whore, and he has a big mouth. He is going to have to back up his votes and all the inconsistent statements and positions he has held (hell- from just the last 6 months there is enough to make you dizzy). But did you guys know he is a Viet Nam veteran?

4.) Dean is an outsider to the Beltway crowd, so the press will latch onto him as ‘new’ and ‘fresh’ and ‘exciting.’ That is always good for some media.

5.) Although he is a lightweight, he seems confident when he speaks (despite being wrong the majority of the time, or simply having a veneer of a position that is immediately shattered when asked fair yet tough questions. See Meet the Press). The press is too lazy to point out when he is wrong, so he can babble on without consequence at this point.

I really don’t see how Edward has a chance- every time I see him, I am reminded of the movie Legally Blonde.
