Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

He really is that stupid.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

No one could have predicted…

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

The revolution will be supervised.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Most of you should go to bed and try to be better Jackals in the morning.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

From The Department of Not Getting It

by John Cole|  November 22, 20033:34 pm| 20 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

In the latest episode of Democrats are from Venus, Republicans are from Mars, both Matt Yglesias and Josh Marshall discuss the fact that Soros is pouring millions into Democratic causes. In Matt’s words:

I’m not thrilled about the Democrats’ increasing reliance on a small number of super-rich people to finance our operation because, obviously, it does influence the party’s ability to really operate as an independent mass movement.

Josh discusses the influence of Scaife’s money, as discussed in a WaPo editorial:

whoever wrote this clunker needs to familiarize themselves with Mr. Scaife’s giving to myriad conservative causes (think tanks, publications, pressure groups, etc.) throughout the 1990s, and before, and since.

Those of course contributed significantly to the Republican victories in 2002, and in other elections — just as Democrats hope that Soros’ largesse will contribute to hoped-for future triumphs.

The problem is, most Republicans don’t care how much money Soros dumps into Democratic causes. What we find amusing is that Democrats have spent years villifying money in politics, all the while having large donors quietly fill their coffers. Add to that the influence of the unions, the NAACP, NOW, and all the other interest groups that operate as a third wing of the DNC, and the Democratic party really is not suffering in the money game. And then, they suffer from dramatic memory loss when they attack Bush for smashing all the fundraising records, conveniently forgetting whose records he has broken.

All that is going on now is that the Republicans have a face to paint on the big money- one that goes along well with the Streisand’s and other multi-millionaires that have been long feeding the Democratic party. If I detect anything, it is a little bit of embarassment. As far as I am concerned, Soros can give every penny in his fortune to the DNC and their puppet organizations- just as long as it is disclosed.

And please, can we quit pretending the Democrats are hurting for money? Has anyone bothered to calculate the money raised by the nine dwarves?

Iraq Reconstruction

More news from Iraq:

Army plans call for keeping about 100,000 U.S. soldiers in Iraq through March 2006, a senior Army officer said Friday. The plans reflect concerns of senior commanders that stabilizing Iraq could be more difficult than anticipated.

The officer warned that maintaining a force of that size in Iraq beyond then would cause the Army to “really start to feel the pain” from stresses on overtaxed active-duty soldiers as well as Reserve and National Guard troops.

The officer was offering a senior-level Army view on the issue. The size of any future American force in Iraq ultimately will be decided by the president and a new provisional Iraqi government.

Expect the Democrat’s faux ‘Bush is going to cut and run’ meme to be temporarily sidetracked with a return to grave concerns that we have no plan. If only the UN were involved.

The Shit is Going Down

Bad things brewing in Georgia:

Thousands of protesters flooded the capital of Georgia and vowed not to leave until President Eduard Shevardnadze resigns over a parliamentary election scandal that has transformed into a full-blown national crisis.

The protest was timed to coincide with the convening of the new parliament, elected in a Nov. 2 ballot that the opposition claims was rigged and which has fueled popular anger against Shevardnadze’s government.

Shevardnadze, speaking to journalists inside the parliament building, said he was ready for dialogue with the opposition, but “without any ultimatums. Parliament was elected and … parliament should begin work today.”

This poverty-stricken country has slid into its biggest political crisis in years, with pro- and anti-Shevardnadze forces vowing to avoid bloodshed but also refusing to budge. Both sides are amassing thousands of supporters in the already tense capital.

“We are giving the president one last chance,” protest leader Mikhail Saakashvili said, addressing thousands of his supporters on Freedom Square. “Within one hour, either he comes to the people or the people will come to him.”

Cable news networks are showing masses storming Parliament as I write this.

This post is in: General Stupidity

Every time I see that sick freak Michael Jackson on television, just the site of him gives me the heebie-jeebies. At any rate, I have decided that this website will be MJ free- after this post of course. These comments are just absurd:

Jackson’s brother Jermaine denounced the allegations in a CNN interview as “nothing but a modern-day lynching.”

“This is what they want to see: him in handcuffs. You got it. But it won’t be for long, I promise you,” Jermaine Jackson said.

That ridiculous quotation from Jermaine has Charles Austin asking, “Has the phrase ‘modern day lynching’ jumped the shark?”

Short answer- YES.

Perhaps I am Crazy

Maybe I am crazy, or not simply partisan enough, but it sure seems to me like this NY Times article is nothing more than a hit piece on Dean, with the paper of record doing Kerry and Clark’s dirty work. The again, this could just be a little bit of media inoculation by the Dean campaign.

The Guessing Game

by John Cole|  November 21, 20036:36 pm| 2 Comments

How do you think Josh Marshall will spin this news:

The United States and its key Asian and European allies said on Friday they were suspending a North Korean nuclear power project for one year, but stopped short of scrapping it as the Bush administration wanted.

The New York-based Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization, or KEDO, said the suspension would start on Dec. 1. A decision to resume operations will be made within a year while five countries try to persuade communist Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons programs that have spooked the United States and nations in the region.

“KEDO is not leaving the place,” A diplomatic source said. “Hopefully you will have a diplomatic outcome in the talks … and the organization may be involved in delivering what kind of energy assistance has been decided.”

KEDO was the international consortium established to run and manage a project that stemmed from the so-called Agreed Framework between the Clinton administration and Pyongyang.

Which knee-jerk anti-Bush track will Josh take? Which version will he state? Will it be the agressive United States bullying our allies, with a statement like this:

“Regional allies acquiesed to aggressive lobbying and bullying by the United States and agreed to a temporary halt in the construction a nuclear reactor that came from the widly successful Clinton era Agreed Framework- an agreement that was sabotaged by neo-cons and bumbling rhetoric from the President.”

Or will it be the Allies sticking together to keep the peace, saving us from a neo-con nightmare in the region:

“The United States today was rebuffed by four regional allies, as they refused to agree to a belligerent and perhaps hostile attempt to permanently end construction of a nuclear reactor on the North Korean peninsula. The liberal Brookings Institution, ina press release that read like a sigh of relief, stated that ‘Cooler heads have prevailed and fortunately our allies were able to restrain the mad dog tactics of the current Bush cabal.'”

Ok. Maybe I got a little carried away with the second one, although it is not far off from the breathless rhetoric comes from Marshall on a daily basis. Which option will he try?

Or perhaps, there is option #3- he will ignore it completely, recognizing that no matter how dishonest he is, how much background he distorts, and how out of control he attempts to portray this administration, there is no way not to recognize that this is a multilateral success and a repudiation of the policies of the Clinton administration.
