Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Wait, what?

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Maddy Strikes Again

This Q&A between Time and Madeline Albright is just beautiful:

Should the U.S. have invaded Iraq?

I always believed Saddam has the kind of record that justifies taking action. I didn’t see Saddam as an imminent threat, which is where I parted company with them … I think the whole thing has been mishandled.

Has the war made the problem of terrorism better or worse?

The Administration immediately tied Sept. 11 to Saddam. They said, basically, that Saddam and Iraq were a hotbed of terrorism. While I had many criticisms of Saddam, that’s not the way I saw it. But now Iraq is in fact a breeding ground for terrorists.

What should the U.S. do next?

Frankly, if there was a President Gore, we wouldn’t be in this particular mess. But we are, and we cannot fail. I very much hope there will be a U.N. resolution that makes clear the U.S. has military command but that would set up a U.N. high representative to coordinate the political and humanitarian things the U.N. does very well.

Frankly, if my aunt had testicles she would be my uncle. You- bad voters- see what happens when you don’t vote for Democrats?

Mail Client

I am looking for a mail client. I have been using Eudora, but my filters are simply not working and I am tired of screwing with them. I need something that can separate the numerous listservs I subscribe to from personal emails and spam. Any suggestions (other than Outlook) would be appreciated.

Quagmire Alert

The NY Times is just dying for another Viet Nam- so much so that they continue to give the ‘Q-word’ lip service, but they are not quite ready to unload it on the front page:

A week after President Bush’s speech seeking to rally support for the campaign in Iraq, the nation appears increasingly anxious about the war effort and worried that the United States may be trapped in an adventure from which there is no evident exit, according to interviews during the last five days with Americans across the nation, historians, social scientists and pollsters.

Some people went so far as to suggest a comparison with an earlier military action that had an unhappy history: the war in Vietnam.

The ‘paper of record,’ sounding like a broken record. Why do we have to debunk the same damn story every three weeks?

Game, Set, Match

by John Cole|  September 15, 200311:57 am| 2 Comments

This post is in: Politics

It is now officially over:

State Senator John Whitmire of Texas, ignoring pressure from Democratic colleagues, will attend a special legislative session in Austin today, an aide to the senator said, a move that gives Gov. Rick Perry, a Republican, the quorum he needs to try to push through a disputed Republican redistricting plan.

The aide, Laura Wendler, Senator Whitmire’s legislative director, said the senator would follow through on the statements he made in recent days that “he would take his fight to the Senate floor.”

Because I know Democrats, I am looking forward to them villifying Whitmire more than they attack the Republicans, because eating their own is what the Democrats are best at. I would not be surprised to see them attack Whitmire so savagely that he has a difficult time getting re-elected, further weakening Democrat interests. However, we are all well aware the prominent role that partisan purity plays within the Democrat party.

K Street

I watched K Street last night, and I thought it was a pretty interesting piece of work. I will be tuning in again.

*** Update ***

Here is Tom Shale’s review:

“K Street” is highly unlikely to become a national sensation, but in big cities of the East it ought to be quite the conversation piece — for a little while anyway. In a sense, the show comes off like a marvelous party, but one to which many of us are bound to feel profoundly uninvited.

It’s About Time

Thankfully, someone is coming to their senses:

Israel’s vice prime minister said today that killing the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat was one of several options now under government consideration. Meanwhile, a beaming Mr. Arafat soaked up the cheers of supporters who descended on his compound for a fourth successive day.

“Arafat can no longer be a factor in what happens here,” Ehud Olmert, Israel’s vice prime minister, told Israel radio.

Killing Arafat is one option I am willing to immediately explore.
