Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

INEXCUSABLE

by John Cole|  August 5, 200312:29 pm| 3 Comments

This post is in: General Stupidity

This is absurd:

But nearly two years after the World Trade Center was destroyed, the department actually has fewer firefighters in the unit, which deals with biological, chemical or radiological attacks, than it did before Sept. 11. Some 14 of the 35 positions in the city’s one formal hazardous materials unit are vacant, according to a current member, and the notion of adding a fully trained second unit appears remote.

Fire Department officials, while saying they still desire to expand the ranks of the specialized unit, said they had decided to try to improve the basic hazardous materials training of all members of the department so they could assist in handling another terrorist attack. They said a lack of money was one reason they had failed to expand the number of fully trained hazardous materials specialists.

Some experts inside and outside the department have criticized its overall response as inadequate. They say the idea of providing fewer hours of training to a greater number of firefighters is a dangerous mistake, and they say the department’s top officials have simply failed to create a real plan for recruiting men and women to the specialized unit.

This is not a money issue- every department in every aspect of government wants more money. This is an example of BAD judgement and BAD prioritizing. I wonder how long before Bush is blamed.

What is in it for Israel:

The current peace plan, known as the road map, does not require Israel to free prisoners. But Mr. Abbas has made releasing Palestinians jailed by the Israelis a top priority, and Israel says it wants to strengthen Mr. Abbas’s position.

Instead of nudging the negotiations forward, though, the prisoner issue has become a leading point of contention. Palestinians say the Israelis are giving far too little, and some rightist Israelis accuse their government of giving too much.

Palestinian factions are threatening to call off a month-old truce if Israel does not make concessions.

Other than making Abbas more legit, why should they free more than the 350 they have offered?

Gay Clergy

Does anyone know what is going on here?

Only hours before what was expected to be a historic vote on whether to approve the first openly gay Anglican bishop, Episcopal Church officials suddenly delayed the decision this afternoon, saying they needed to investigate sexual accusations against him.

Episcopalians at a convention that already has been punctuated by fierce debate over the selection of the gay bishop-elect, V. Gene Robinson, and fears that it could fracture the denomination, seemed further divided by the development on the day that the debate was finally to be over. In the hallways of the Episcopal Church USA meeting, some said any accusations needed to be thoroughly studied, while others denounced them as a desperate, last-minute move to block the appointment.

Is this just a smear? Is anyone from the area and know anything about the man? You had to be politically blind not to see something like this coming- any time you make your sexuality the cornerstone of your existence (although it may be his political opponents who have made it the cornerstone), it is going to lead to bad things. I don’t mean to say that gay people should be quiet and just hide who they are, but does anyone here think I would know who Gene Robinson was UNLESS he was gay? Maybe I am out in left field here…

More of the Bore Gore

Al Gore is going to speak up on the War In Iraq:

Amid talk he’s being urged to jump back into the presidential race, Al Gore has arranged to speak out on Iraq to a large anti-war group at New York University on Thursday.
A Gore spokeswoman insisted, “Truly, honestly, he’s not planning on getting back into the race,” but the former vice president’s speech to the organization MoveOn should only fuel the speculation.

It will be Gore’s first speech on Iraq since he came out against the Bush administration’s push toward war last September.

A MoveOn spokesman said Gore recently called the group and asked if he could address its members. He’s set to speak to about 600 members at the Kimmel Center for University Life in Washington Square.

MoveOn, a national anti-war group that boasts 120,000 members in the New York City area, recently gave Democratic anti-war candidate Howard Dean a big boost by conducting an online poll that Dean won.

So, is he going to come out in favor or against the war? It is 50/50 in my mind- depending on what his political calculus is and what he thinks is the most beneficial to himself.

At any rate, I think it is distasteful for him to speak up on the issue- the other candidates, I can understand and encourage them. Someone who is the former Veep and out of office should just pipe down- same with his former boss.
