Recycled Stories

by John Cole|  August 4, 20039:36 am| Leave a Comment

This post is in: Media

The UK Guardian appears to be recycling old stories, refitting them with a new ‘hidden truth about casualties in Iraq’ meme, and letting gullible (or willing) Democrats get all in a tizzy about it. In this case, the accomplices are Atrios and TalkLeft. Here is a snippet from the Guardian piece they are referring to:

US military casualties from the occupation of Iraq have been more than twice the number most Americans have been led to believe because of an extraordinarily high number of accidents, suicides and other non-combat deaths in the ranks that have gone largely unreported in the media.

Since May 1, when President George Bush declared the end of major combat operations, 52 American soldiers have been killed by hostile fire, according to Pentagon figures quoted in almost all the war coverage. But the total number of US deaths from all causes is much higher: 112.

Gee, now where have we heard that before? Get ready for the irony- TALKLEFT! Here is Jeralynn’s post based on this Editor and Publisher story on July 17th:

Any way you look at it, the news is bad enough. According to Thursday’s press and television reports, 33 U.S. soldiers have now died in combat since President Bush declared an end to the major fighting in the war on May 2. This, of course, is a tragedy for the men killed and their families, and a problem for the White House.

But actually the numbers are much worse — and rarely reported by the media.

According to official military records, the number of U.S. soldiers who have died in Iraq since May 2 is actually 85. This includes a staggering number of non-combat deaths. Even if killed in a non-hostile action, these soldiers are no less dead, their families no less aggrieved. And it’s safe to say that nearly all of these people would still be alive if they were still back in the States.

My favorite part is the ‘rarely reported by the media’ line. I guess it is rarely reported, if you mean ‘SOME VARIATION OF THE SAME DAMN STORY WILL APPEAR EVERY TWO WEEKS WITH ONLY THE NUMBERS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT.’

Both articles refer the readers to a website called the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, which is tracking all deaths in the war. Funny, but I did a google news search for the Iraw Coalition Casualty Count, and as you can see, this UNREPORTED or UNDERREPORTED phenomenon of fudged casualty numbers was only published in about 40 newspapers. So much for rarely reported by the media.

In other words- people die in combat zones- from accidents, suicide, and combat. Counting suicides and car wrecks as combat deaths is stupid (even though I agree it is no less tragic), and we should expect the left to try it again in about two more weeks in another breathless article telling you that the media is ‘under-reporting’ casualties.

20 Worst Americans

by John Cole|  August 4, 20031:45 am| 30 Comments

This post is in: Politics

John Hawkins has the bloggers choices of the worst Americans in history up:

17) Franklin Delano Roosevelt (6)
17) John Walker (6)
17) Lee Harvey Oswald (6)
17) Robert Byrd (6)
16) Aldrich Ames (7)
14) Richard Nixon (8)
14) Aaron Burr (8)
12) Al Sharpton (9)
12) Charles Manson (9)
8) Timothy McVeigh (10)
8) Lyndon Johnson (10)
8) Hillary Clinton (10)
8) John Wilkes Booth (10)
7) Alger Hiss (12)
6) Noam Chomsky (13)
4) Jesse Jackson (14)
4) Jimmy Carter (14)
3) Bill Clinton (15)
2) Benedict Arnold (19)
1) The Rosenbergs (15) & Julius Rosenberg (5) (20 total votes)

I can agree with a lot of them (I listed a few of them), but Bill and Hillary Clinton do not belong on the list, as much as I may dislike their transparent political maneuvering, the lying, and the hypocrisy. Hillary Clinton has, to date, been a pretty Hawkish Senator, and other than that, she was an unimportant First Lady whose main achievement was to settle temporarily what the American public felt about nationalized Health Care. Yes, she is a liar and a fraud, yes, I know about the cattle futures and the billing records and her relationship with all the people the Clinton’s used to smear people, but she does not belong on the same list as the Rosenbergs or John Wilkes Booth or Alger Hiss for chrissakes.

Bill Clinton, despite all his shortcomings and his petulance and his perjury and his womanizing, did do a number of good things for the country. Like NAFTA, and Welfare Reform, Kosovo, and, I can also heap what is the highest praise any president should get for the economy- he didn’t screw it up (I don’t think Presidents fix economies or are responsible for good ones- unlike the Democrats trying to smear Bush with this business cycle). Plus, if anyone has done more for the Republicans, it has been Bill and Hillary Clinton. Do you know how many candidacies have been funded from Republican fund-raising because of these two? Do you realize that the Democrat party is in shambles because of the power grabs of these two? Do you understand how lucky the Republicans are to have the Clinton’s pick (McAullife) running the DNC?

Bill and Hillary are sewer trout, but they aren’t the worst Americans to ever live- not by a longshot. Claiming they belong on the list makes you guys sound like the Daily Kos or Oliver Willis or Atrios or the Democrat Underground talking about Bush. I mean folks, some perspective, please. John Wayne Gacy dressed up as a clown, seduced young boys, then strangled them while raping them. He did this to a few dozen boys. He didn’t make the list, but Hillary Clinton got ten votes and Bill got 15? Jeebus.

Some people that should be on that list (and were on my list):

Sirhan Sirhan
James Earl Ray

These two assassins shattered the dreams of millions. I think that is a rather odious accomplishment. Also on the list should be:

Ramsey Clark (*- I edited him in a day late- he was on my initial list to John Hawkins, bvut I forgot about him while writing this post until I read a reader comment. The Rammer most certainly belongs on this list.)
Robert McNamara
Lee Iacocca (for the K Car).

Finally, my list also included Dallas Cowboy turned Raider turned nobody linebacker Larry Brown for intercepting two of Neil O’Donnell’s passes in Super Bowl XXX to stop the inevitable Steeler comeback and officially ruin my decade. Honorable Mention to Francisco Cabrera for knocking in the game winning run (Game 7- GAME FRIGGING SEVEN IN THE NINTH INNING- ARGGGGGH!!) for the Braves over my Pirates in the 1992 NLCS (or should I be mad at Jose Lind for that damned error?). Issues, I have issues.

*** Update ***

Roger Simon makes some good points about why the selection of the Clintons and the Jimmy Carter is just stupid.

*** Update #2 ***

Dean Esmay has a truly impressive list of villains up, and agrees with me that it is absurd to include the Clintons.

*** Update #3 ***

Great minds think alike- Michele at A Small Victory concurs regarding the Clintons.

*** Update #4 ****

Kim du Toit respectfully disagrees. Hell, he could have rudely disagreed and I would still be polite. Have you seen his gun collection?

Movie Mistakes

by John Cole|  August 3, 200311:48 pm| 12 Comments

This post is in: Movies

One of my biggest pet peeves is military movies that get the military culture, and most annoyingly, researchable, verifiable facts WRONG. To me, it is inexcusable- there are a couple MILLION veterans who would be able to help the Hollywood nitwits out- not everyone has to hire Dale Dye.

At any rate, one of the most egregious and unforgiveable mistakes in recent history was in Courage Under Fire, that 2 hours of bilge, in which my beloved M1A1 Abrams was portrayed as a diesel belching monstrosity. I am not going to explain why this infuriated me (other than I was an M1A1 tanker)- you can go look it up. Then there was that little issue with the spent casings in the turret. Never mind.

At any rate, with much hesitation, I decided to rent and watch Basic tonight- it didn’t look to good, but I am a sucker for a military flick. About ten minutes into the movie, I noticed something that almost made me quit watching. For those who have never been in the military, this is the rank insignia for paygrade E-4, Specialist:

spc.gif

This is the rank insignia for paygrade E-5, Sergeant:

sgt.gif

Notice the similarities? You shouldn’t – because there are none- Specialist is an enlisted rank, Sergeant is a Non-Commisioned Officer. They are distinctly different for a reason.

So why then would the main character of the movie, Master Sergeant West (portrayed by Samuel Jackson) a hard charging Ranger Platoon Sergeant, be wearing Specialist rank, when his rank should be this:

msg.gif

Laziness. Sheer, despicable, inexcuseable LAZINESS. Even if the rest of the movie is ok, I will remember only this. And they probably spent 40 million making the damn thing.

FWIW- I submitted it to Movie Mistakes.

Powell

by John Cole|  August 3, 200310:56 pm| 30 Comments

This post is in: Domestic Politics

The WaPo is reporting that Colin Powell will not serve as Secretary of State in a second Bush administration:

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and his deputy, Richard L. Armitage, have signaled to the White House that they intend to step down even if President Bush is reelected, setting the stage for a substantial reshaping of the administration’s national security team that has remained unchanged through the September 2001 terrorist attacks, two wars and numerous other crises.

To which I say, good for him. He is an American hero, and if I were him I would retire and ENJOY LIFE for a few years. Some random thoughts:

– Be the first to find a lefty claiming that this is either proof that Bush is a foreign policy failure (and Powell can’t take it anymore) or that this means the neocons are really going to take over (the article hints at it mentioning Libby and Wolfowitz as possible replacements, but I am talking about the real hysterical ranting). For the record, Clinton had Two secretaries of State, G.H.W. Bush had two, Reagan had two, Carter had two, and Nixon had two, so Powell stepping down is a sign of, well, nothing.

– Powell for Veep in ’04, or Powell for Pres in 08?

– Where will this put Rice in the power scheme?

– Has there ever been anyone this central to so may Presidents in recent history (Gergen comes to mind)?

*** UPDATE ***

Oliver Willis delivers with the first lefty hysterical ranting about Powell leaving. And, its a twofer- we have dire warnings about the future of a neocon State Dept. AND Oliver is projecting his own reasons for why Powell is leaving. Well done, O-Dub. Congratulations to Mason for the quick find!

It will be Invasions, Unlimited.

One of the sole voices of semi-reason in the Bush foreign policy has been Colin Powell. Sure, at the end of the run-up to Iraq he faltered and fell in with the company line, but it has been quite obvious that the duplicity is getting to him and anyone with half a conscience wouldn’t be able to stand it.

We would never stop fighting with State & Defense in the grasp of Wolfowitz/Rice/Rumsfeld. It would make the last three years look like nothing. Not that we needed more evidence against a Bush re-election, but, there it is.

Are these guys predictable, or what?

*** Update #2 ***

The Calpundit shows he doesn’t want Oliver to have all the fun in this post titled “Victory for the Neocons?” Kevin come up with his own twofer- the title alludes to a neocon nightmare takeover, and then he expresses his grave doubts that Powell is absolutely stepping down for personal reasons. You see, in a Republican administration, when someone leaves after four years, it is because of scandal or something- they can’t just leave like people in Democrat administrations.

*** Update #3 ***

Jeralynn at Talk Left manages to talk about the issue like a sane person, and not some conspiracy mongering hyper-partisan. Kudos to Talk Left.

Fisking Robert McNamara

by John Cole|  August 3, 20038:48 pm| 1 Comment

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

A Fearful Symmetry carpet bombs Robert McNamara:

At the end of the day, a strong system of international courts will do little or nothing to prevent autocratic states from committing crimes against humanity during the course of their wars. In fact, the only international change that would make war crimes a thing of the past would be for all the autocracies to disappear. And in terms of furthering that goal, the best thing America can do is promote (if not cause) global regime changes, not sign on to just another paper treaty.

Of course, the only regime change McNamara helped ensure was South Vietnam’s.

The Lunatic Fringe

How much do the morons on the left hate Bush? This much:

So let’s all hope the President has a great August. After all, not everyone is as lucky as he is. Some of us have to work.

These twerps are actually trying to score political points because soldiers are still in Iraq and Bush is going on vacation. These guys are f—ing hysterical, and not in a funny way. I will say it again- if you had told me ten years ago that there would be a Republican president that the left would hate more and villify more than Reagan, I would have told you that you were insane. You just do not understand the seething rage these fruity nitwits have for Bush.

BTW- That was Steve GIlliard writing that at the Daily Kos, and he is one of the more strident leftist pinheads to ever grace the earth. Here is what the owner of the site wrote last year about Bush’s vacation:

I don’t begrudge the president for taking a one-month vacation. I would take one if I could. Yet why would Rove give the president’s critics an opening in the runup to the Fall elections? Politically, it’s not the wisest decision.
