Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We will not go back.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

This fight is for everything.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

This really is a full service blog.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

This blog will pay for itself.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Bring ‘Em On

Looks like it is time for some more house cleaning in Afghanistan:

Bands of 50 or more pro-Taliban fighters have begun appearing around Kandahar, both along the border with Pakistan and in the interior of the province. Just over the border in the Pakistani town of Chaman, high-ranking Taliban officials are meeting openly and handing out guns, money and motorbikes, according to a witness and Afghan police officials. Poor Afghans who don’t share the Taliban’s strict interpretation of Islam or its mission of jihad are nevertheless accepting Pakistani money to plant land mines and bombs in Afghanistan, they said.

In addition to Taliban fighters, other men with guns — warlords — dominate much of Kandahar, allowing the trade in illegal drugs to flourish. Civic activists who once hoped to provide an alternative to both radical fundamentalists and marauding militiamen feel silenced and afraid.

“If someone rises up to say something about democracy or social equality, then tomorrow he won’t exist anymore,” said Mohammad Wali Hotek, head of one of the largest tribes in the Pashtun ethnic group, which is predominant in the south. “As there is no rule of law in Afghanistan, the gunmen can do anything they want.

I hope people understand it is going to take a long time to ‘fix’ Afghanistan.

You Chose Poorly

I am not in favor of human suffering, but I am finding it difficult to muster sympathy for this crowd:

The 1,500 Palestinian refugees stranded inside the Haifa Sports Club were once part of former president Saddam Hussein’s favorite foreign cause. He welcomed them after other Arab countries shut their doors, provided them with free housing, mentioned their political plight in major speeches and promised to liberate their homeland one day.

But with the collapse of Hussein’s government in April, the estimated 70,000 Palestinians living in Iraq — including some who arrived half a century ago and many who were born here — lost a powerful patron. And in the chaotic, score-settling days that followed, a society that had embraced them for decades revealed an uglier face.

“We lived with our neighbors for years; we went to each other’s parties; we took each other to the hospital. But after Saddam left, they told us there was no place for us in Iraq any more,” said Feduah Abdel Ghani, 34, whose family moved into a tent last month after being forced from their home of 14 years. “I thought they liked me. It is a big shock.”

Yes, the Palestinians have been played like pawns for years by every despot and tyrant in the region, but I still find it hard to feel bad for people whose sole goal in life is the destruction of Israel and the demise of the United States.

Bush and Hispanics

Yesterday, Matt Yglesias linked to this NY Times story about Hispanic support for Bush AND big government and stated:

The NY Times takes a look at Latino public opinion and discovers that Hispanics want the government to be bigger, but they also like Bush’s tax cuts. My understanding is that this combination of opinions is

I never thought I would say this, but thank goodness Atrios is back from vacation. Whatever you think of his politics (the word odious comes to my mind), he is a HELLUVA lot better than the Atriettes that were substituting for him. Welcome back.

She Aims To Please

This post is in: Media

In an effort to prove she has not yet hit rock bottom, Mo-Do wastes the priceless NY Times Op-Ed space on a stream of consciousness that flitters from a defense of gay marriage to a make-over for the top players in the Bush administration:

When it came to the president’s possibilities, he got really excited: “Cowboy boots are fine for a certain kind of saucy backyard barbecue. But wearing them as often as he does, with those big belt buckles in the shape of Texas, it seems like he’s trying too hard to prove his masculinity.

“He’s definitely on the right track with low-stress weight lifting, but if he really wants a physique for the ages, a little yoga would help uncoil that gunslinger hunch.

“His hair is too tightly clipped. It looks painted on. And he’s a huge squinter. The corner of his eyes are starting to look lined. Botox alert!

“He needs to dip into the merciful world of cosmetic products and avail himself of some kind of lip balm or gloss that helps mask the fact that he misplaced his lips somewhere.

“In open-collar shirts, he has a tiny little island of lost chest hair. It is too low to be a shaving oversight and too high to be a peripheral outgrowth of Alec Baldwin chest mat. It’s neither fish nor fowl, so he should wax it out of there.

Groan. Bill Keller, please hire ANY of the liberals down to the right in my links section to take over this hideous waste of space.

Great Joke

This post is in: Humorous

Matt Welch, for his birthday the other day, asked readers to submit a joke as a present. My favorite is from Michael Totten:

A priest, a rabbi, and an imam walk into a bar. The bartender says “What, is this some kind of a joke?”

BTW- Mr. Totten is off blogspot and you should redirect your links here.

WMD?

I’ll take this report of WMD finds with the usual hockey-puck sized grain o’ salt:

group of Swedish researchers, travelling to Iraq without the knowledge of the Swedish government, is announcing that they have found missiles for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in a house in Baghdad.

The finds will be presented in a forthcoming production by World Television Network (WTN). The information supposedly came to Swedish WTN reporter Maria Wera Cedrell, who has worked in Iraq for 15 years, through an Iraqi scientist. She was assisted by former arms inspector and WMD expert
