Kerry sure is the gift that keeps on giving:
Senator John Kerry said Monday that he would have voted to give the president the authority to invade Iraq even if he had known all he does now about the apparent dearth of unconventional weapons or a close connection to Al Qaeda.
“I believe it’s the right authority for a president to have,” said Mr. Kerry, who has faced criticism throughout his presidential campaign for that October 2002 vote.
I bet they thought it would be at least a couple weeks before they had to update this video.
The base is not amused.

Not surprising. Kerry has show repeatedly that he wants this election to be about Vietnam. So, he’ll happily concede that the President was right about Iraq, just to keep things focused on Vietnam.

And so it begins:
“Reuters: “Now, almost two years after he voted for the war in Iraq, and almost 220 days after switching positions to declare himself the anti-war candidate, my opponent has found a new nuance,” Bush said. “He now agrees it was the right decision to go into Iraq.”
“After months of questioning my motives, and even my credibility, Senator Kerry now agrees with me that even though we have not found the stockpiles of weapons we all believed were there, knowing everything we know today, he would have voted to go into Iraq and remove Saddam Hussein from power. I want to thank Senator Kerry for clearing that up,” Bush said.”

From Kos’s site:
“So Rubin is saying that even though Hussein didn’t have links to Al Qaida,”
Umm, except it did. There were plenty of contacts between Iraq and Al Qaeda, and Iraq even offered haven to AQ. That doesn’t mean they were collaborating every day, but to deny any links is just idiocy.
“didn’t have weapons of mass destruction,”
Again, except they did. We haven’t found huge stockpiles of weapons, but we sure have found chemical weapons. Or were those Sarin and mustard gas shells just imaginary?
” and didn’t threaten either the US or its neighbors,”
Exepct it did. Kos apparently doesn’t remember Iraq firing scuds into Israel (technically, they aren’t a “neighbor” of Iraq since they don’t share a border). Nor does he recall that Vladimir Putin said Iraq had plans to attack the US.
Sheesh, 3 out of 3 points Kos got wrong.
“that Kerry still would’ve invaded Iraq?”
Yup, Kerry said that. Amazing, huh?

One hopes that GWB made sure to wear the steel-toed cowboy boots when he gave Kerry that kick in the ‘nads.
As for Kos, it looks like he’s been reducing to repeating Lord Pork-Pork’s talking points–incompetently.

I think Kerry’s saying he supported the war no matter what is a two-fold strategy:
1. Make up for the loss on the SBVT issue. If he can’t make Vietnam the issue, he needs a new one.
2. He needs to sway at least some of the pro-war people to his side. And that he’d support the war (now) suggests that his own polling indicates that there’s a substantial vein of support for the war (which, in turn, suggests taht the “more people oppose the war than ever” line is incorrect–else, why would he come out FOR the war and alienate his own base??).
3. The goal-posts will shift again. It’s not that he was opposed to the war, oh no!, he’s against the PEACE! It’s the poor planning for AFTER the war that he’s against.
$5 that that’s the new talking points by next Friday.
