How Does The Kool-Aid Taste Today?
“Moderate” Kevin Drum is questioning the “transmitter under Bush’s suit” nonsense. For those in the fever swamps, Drum states:
The White House flatly denies it, and I guess I don’t believe it either. Salon thinks this picture is proof positive that Bush was wired during the second debate, but that’s a little too far out there for me.
But if it’s not a transmitter hidden under Bush’s jacket, what the hell is it? It’s no suit pucker, that’s for sure. There’s something there, and it’s a square about six inches on a side.
Some kind of back brace? Doesn’t seem like it. A medical thingamajig of some kind? Could be, I guess. Is that why Bush decided to skip his annual physical this year? So he doesn’t have to fess up to some kind of health problem during the campaign?
Notice how his left arm is raised Kevin? Now. Repeat after me: SHOULDER BLADE.
Also at the Washington Monthly, I learned that Karl Rove forgot to send me the newest book of ‘code words.’ These people have lost their minds, as Tom Maguire points out.
Foot In Mouth Syndrome
Prior to the 1990’s revival of the GOP, it seemed the Republican party had a bottomless pit of methods for self-destruction in campaigns, and one commentator quipped:
“Never underestimate the Repulican’s ability to shoot themselves in the foot while it is in their mouth.”
It appears there is a little bit of this going around the Kerry/Edwards camp. The first statement is the widely discussed nuisance statement:
When I asked Kerry what it would take for Americans to feel safe again, he displayed a much less apocalyptic worldview. “We have to get back to the place we were, where terrorists are not the focus of our lives, but they’re a nuisance,” Kerry said. “As a former law-enforcement person, I know we’re never going to end prostitution. We’re never going to end illegal gambling. But we’re going to reduce it, organized crime, to a level where it isn’t on the rise. It isn’t threatening people’s lives every day, and fundamentally, it’s something that you continue to fight, but it’s not threatening the fabric of your life.”
This will upset my loyal friends on the right, but I just don’t see what the problem with this statement is, and I agree with him. That is the goal- to eliminate the current overwhelming terrorist threat to that of nuisance level. It in no way implies that Kerry underestimates the nature of the threat (although I believe he does), it in no way means he will be weak on terrorism (although I think he will be not as good as Bush), but rather, it is clearly a statement in which Kerry is asked to project what the world is going to look like after our successful prosecution on the war on terror.
We will never eradicate all terrorism, and the goal is to get it to the level that life is tolerable. There is always going to be some idiot with some C4 or a fertilizer bomb- hell, go read Orcinus and you will find out all aboutour own homegrown nuts who are walting around the US with their own half-baked ideas.
Why, then, am I calling this a foot in mouth gaffe? Because you would think the jackass who totally demagogued Bush’s statement that we can never ‘win’ the war on terror would know better than to say the same damn thing. Of course, Kerry contradicts himself hourly and no one seems to care, so perhaps he just said to hell with it and didn’t give it any thought. At any rate, even though I agree with him, it is funny watching him get hit around hte head and shoulders with this statement.
The next gaffe from the Dynamic Duo is John Edward’s hideous statement implying that if Kerry is elected, the handicapped will walk again. Not only did he not wait until Reee’s corpse was even cold, it is a disgusting lie. There is simply no evidenmce that embryonic stem cell research will help spinal injury victims atall, and saying otherwise is worthy of condemnation.
Dan Quayle should be breathing a sigh of relief, because he seems downright Presidential compared to Edwards.

This post is rue to get me some flack, but what the hell.
My question: “What the hell is wrong with Islam?”
Why is it that almost every religious leader in the United States does everything he/she can to make sure that his/her people have access to the franchise, while the sole goal of the religious leaders in Islamic countries is to deny their people the fraanchise?
Is Islam fundamentally incapable of accepting democracy? I’m tired of hearing about how Islam is ‘a peaceful religion.’ I read the damn news- I know who is causing what problems. I want some evidence, not just anecdotes.
I just find it sickening that the ‘religious’ leaders in Afghanistan are threatening their flock with death for exercising the right to vote.
The Real Deal
My beloved Steelers are now 4-1 after manhandling the hated Brownies, and it is becoming pretty clear that Ben Roethlisberger is the real deal.

I guess now I am a member of the ‘right wing thugocracy.’
Oliver, once again, completely lies about my position. I am not advocating that the Sinclair group do this. I couldn’t care less. In fact, I have a remote control, and when objectionable programming comes on, I use it.
What I did laugh at, however, is how whenever anything that challenges left-wing orthodoxy or the current DNC talking points, it is viewed as a threat to Democracy.
At any rate, quit lying about me, Oliver. You are starting to make me feel like Bob Dole.
