WVU takes on Va. Tech about a mile from my house, and I am going to sit on thecouch and watch it in HD rather than brave the crowds. I am hopeful about the outcome, but I have a feeling how this is going to end up. I hope I am wrong.
For those of you who wonder why I write about so many sports but little attention to baseball, the standings say it all. The Pirates are going to finish below .500 for the 14th year in a row, and all that remains unanswered is whether they are literally the worst team in baseball.
I like the sport of baseball, I really do. But it is going to take more than a pathological hatred of the Yankees to pique more than a cursory interest in the sport.

I’ve been pretty sick of baseball for a while now. The strike really bothered me.
I used to be a Mets fan. They are pretty bad. They’re payroll approaches the Yankees but they’re record approaches the Pirates in general. I stopped getting the baseball package in 2002 and pretty much stopped watching.
This year, the Nationals came to DC so I became a Nationals fan. I really enjoyed going to games this year and they were fun to watch. I’m even thinking of going to see their last game tomorrow even though it’s at one o’clock and that’s football. And the Giants are on.

There’s nothing pathological about Yankee-hatred.

Wow. A delay of game penalty on the very first play of the game. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.

One day, John, the Pirates and Reds will rise back to the top of the NL Central. One day, the second best rivalry in baseball will again be. That day may not be for a decade or so, but it will return. Probably the same year they let Charlie Hustle in the Hall. And the Reds get some pitching.

foolishmortal and i are in complete agreement about this.

I’d start looking around for another ballclub to root for, honestly. It’s not just that the Pirates are small-market, they’re poorly managed. The Twins and A’s in recent years have shown what you can do with small payroll if you spend your money wisely. Heck, even the Brewers are a .500 team this year. But I don’t see all that much hope for the Pirates until a salary cap is in place. Ditto the Royals.

They could help themselves by not handing out giant contracts to the likes of Eric Milton. Seriously, I love the Reds for all their history as a franchise, but man that was a dumb-ass move.

Quite frankly, thats all you need.

Look at the brighter side.
At least your favorite team isn’t trying to avoid the stigma of having the lowest winning percentage of any division champion. (coughPadrescough)
And been seen as a perennial bottom-of-the-barrel team for decades, with their only Series appearance being viewed as an abberation that should have never happened.
You know, putting it that way makes me really identify the Chargers with that one as well. Their only AFC Championship win, that pull-it-out-with-luck win agaist Pittsburg was exactly that. Luck. Well, that and the God-given talents of Junior Seau.

I have the answer for you. Unfortunately the worst team in baseball is the KC Royals. This is the third year out of the last four that we have lost over 100 games and this year’s edition just set a franchise record for futility.

Is it actually possible to like baseball and not either love or hate the Yankees? I think you’ve been watching cricket or something else.
