    Forget that! I’d start checking off all the countries that don’t have extradition treaties with us, and then check which flights out of Ronald Reagan Nat’l Airport to said countries for the number of congressmen and aides fleeing before Casino Jack flips.

    Hardly. You have no idea what is going on in her private life to warrant such an attack. Could be an ex-husband or boyfriend, a stalker, an unpaid drug dealer. I’m quite sure the cops are looking at it more from that angle than as being related to her job. That would only pan out if more Grassley staffers were attacked or Grassley himself.

    I’ll cheer publicly if he takes down a bunch of crooked pols and staffers with him. Poltiics is fucked up enough as it is without Abramoff adding his own brand of corruption to it.

    BTW, the dead guy isn’t the only casualty. The chief (Republican) staff investigator was attacked in her driveway after work about a month ago, by a big guy with a baseball bat. It put her in the hospital. The attack resembles a spate of attacks on tribal government members that occurred in my original hometown back when some out-of-state native Americans – legitimate native American busy-ness-men, as Fat Tony would say – were attempting to open a casino. Big guys, wearing ski masks and carrying bats would show up, and beat on the tribal leaders. They got their (sovereign) casino, and the tribal council is still terrified of them.

    Abramoff is organized crime scum, just with a better educational background than the average mafia thug. I’ll be applauding DOJ when the prison door slams on his crooked ass.

    There are plenty of well-spoken, college-educated criminals out there, and some of them even know how to use baseball bats… A Sopranos or Cockney accent is not always a pre-req for thuggish intimidation.
    However, I see this overall landscape merely as continuing proof of the old Yorkshire saying “where there’s muck there’s brass” (and vice versa). (Neophytes in the Yorkshire dialect contact me off-blog for a translation to M-W English…)

    I’m not sure exactly how Mothers and Fathers of Italian Ancestry (M.A.F.I.A.) figures in all this, but this is the MOTHER-LODE if Abramoff flips.

    I don’t believe there has ever been such an expensive takeover of government in the history of man. Reminds me of the old saying (from Smokey and the Bandit, and I’m paraphrasing), “Goddamnit, it used to be that when you bought a politician, that son-of-a-bitch STAYED bought!”

    It’ll be fun watching the rats (my apologies to rats) abandoning ship!
