Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Our messy unity will be our strength.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

The words do not have to be perfect.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

When I was faster i was always behind.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Aneurysm

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

If I hear one more Democrat say this inauguration is costing too much, I am going to blow a gasket. Eight years after Bill Clinton’s 33 million dollar inaugural, 40 million is apparently too much.

Most annoying is the association between the tsunami, or this idiot’s association of the inauguration expense with the fallacy of unarmored vehicles in Iraq. Private donors are paying for the inauguration, but this is nothing new- Democrats are always quick to tel people how to spend their money.

But then again, Democrats are not about making sense. They are about making noise. It makes them feel better, which, I guess is good. They can keep behaving like fools, and we will keep running the government. I guess I can put up with it after all.

Absolutely Disgusting

This post is in: Outrage

Glenn labels this the crushing of dissent, and I have to disagree. I will call it what it is: Absolutely Disgusting.

protest.jpg
Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Due, right, a U.S. Army recruiter, is surrounded by protesters at Seattle Central Community College, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Seattle. After about a 10-minute standoff during which protesters tore up U.S Army literature, the protesters were successful in getting Due and another recruiter to leave their table under escort by campus security officers. Several hundred students walked out of classes at several Seattle colleges and universities to protest the inauguration of President Bush.

This isn’t dissent. This is despicable. Although when you peruse the rhetoric of ‘moderate’ Democrats like Oliver Willis, it is hardly surprising that the ‘radical fringe’ might do something like this. After all, ‘moderate’ Oliver’s buddy Michael Moore seems to be stirring up the twerps.

IF I had known they were going to be pepper spraying leftist rabble, I woud have cleared my calendar and attended the Inauguration.

At any rate, the 1st Season of the A-Team just showed up on DVD from Amazon, so I will see you all tomorrow.

Matt writes:

I’d been led by friends to believe that Seymore Hersh’s latest article was all about a secret plan to go to war with Iran, but the Iran-related material in the piece is rather thin. Basically, it tells us what we already knew — that many influential people want to launch a military counterproliferation strike, and many other people think this is nuts. Hersh adds the tidbit that, allegedly, covert surveillance operations laying the groundwork for this are already under way. I don’t find that all too shocking, even if true.

I would find it shocking if the actual operations are not under way. I would consider it a severe ereliction of duty. Maybe on some issues, Democrats and Republicans view the world so differently that we can never gulf the ideological chasm. And this is Matt Yglesias, who, by any reasonable standard, is a rather hawkish Democrat.

Wait a Minute

Jesse takes issue with this Wolfowitz quote:

The number two Pentagon official said reducing American casualties in Iraq was more important than bringing US troops back home — and pointed to the rising Iraqi death toll as evidence this strategy was working.

“I’m more concerned about bringing down our casualties than bringing down our numbers,” Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said in an interview with PBS television’s “The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer” program. “And it is worth saying that since June 1, there have been more Iraqi police and military killed in action than Americans.”

Jesse then states:

The point, my friends, is not to make sure that the toilet works. The point is to make sure someone else is in the bathroom when it overflows.

I would like to see some context, but even without context Jesse is leaping to conclusions, making the worst possible interpretation of the remarks. I may be wrong, but I would be willin tobet that Wolfowitz’s line of thinking is that he would like to stop all of the fatalities, but that he would rather work to keep American casualties down first.

That sounds callous and unthinking, but there is a reasoning behind it. While it mayappear that we are throwing Iraqi’s to the wind, if the insurgency is attacking only Iraqi’s, or mainly Iraqi’s, two things happen. This battle becomes less legitimate in the eyes of jihadists, as this is muslim on muslim violence, rather than jihadists fighting the Great Satan. Second, the primary goal of this endeavor is to give ownership of Iraq to Iraqi’s and that ownership will translate into a population steeled against the minority of insurgents. That is the whole point of not delaying the elections.

I may be wrong, but I would like to see some context.

Move Over, Rosie

There is another fat hypocrite in town:

Filmmaker Michael Moore’s bodyguard was arrested for carrying an unlicensed weapon in New York’s JFK airport Wednesday night.

Police took Patrick Burke, who says Moore employs him, into custody after he declared he was carrying a firearm at a ticket counter. Burke is licensed to carry a firearm in Florida and California, but not in New York. Burke was taken to Queens central booking and could potentially be charged with a felony for the incident.

Moore’s 2003 Oscar-winning film “Bowling for Columbine” criticizes what Moore calls America’s “culture of fear” and its obsession with guns.

Discuss.

*** Update ***

Nothing to discuss. The story is false.
