Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

No one could have predicted…

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Bark louder, little dog.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Hot As Hell

by John Cole|  July 18, 200610:35 am| 33 Comments

This post is in: Previous Site Maintenance

While the situation is heating up (and appears to be taking on an uncomfortable air of permanence) in the Middle East, it is also heating up here in West Virginia. It is hot as hell, and I think I am going to do my best to avoid going outside today.

Every time it gets this hot I wonder whether I would rather be too hot or too cold, and I always come tothe same conclusion- too hot. At least you can survive when it istoo hot, provided you have ample water and shade. You die when it is too cold. Period.

Invariably, by posting it is hot as hell, two things are going to happen. The first is that a long and tortured (and usually wildly inaccurate) debate about global warming will start, and the second is that, inevitably, someone from AZ/NM/a place in the desert surrounded by sand, will state “You think it is hot there, you should try it here!”

The Mess In the Middle East

by John Cole|  July 17, 20065:29 pm| 177 Comments

I actually had about fifteen posts started on the mess in Lebanon, and every time I get half way through a post, I deleted it because my opinions change. And that is really where I am with this whole bloody mess. I instinctively feel that Israel should have the right to defend herself (I feel they are obligated), but at the same time I am not wholly convinced that the people who need to pay for what is being done to Israelis are the ones feeling the brunt of the Israeli military action.

Quagmire.

BTW- If anyone has some links to some decent overall summaries of what is going on that are not jaded by the hubris that seems to have taken over the blogosphere, please link ’em.

Friday Beer Blogging – On The Town

by Tim F|  July 14, 20065:04 pm| 18 Comments

This post is in: Beer Blogging

Recently I passed through Mad Mex in Oakland, a funky little bar with a reliably impressive beer rotation, to see what was new. Everything was served chilled and on tap.

First on the menu, you can hardly resist picking up a pint with a name like Hoppus Maximus (Thirsty Dog in Independence, OH). By the name I expected another fierce entry in the American hop wars, but in fact the beer went down fairly smooth with none of the hoppy pyrotechnics you find in the Maximus IPA from Lagunitas or the bombastic, orchestral hops arrangement in Hop Devil. You could argue that those super-hopped thoroughbreds have become the show dogs of the beer world, exquisite and pure of purpose but not practical for your day-to-day drinking needs. Hoppus Maximus leaves a pleasant mix of citrus and malt on the palate, not sweet like an unfiltered trippel but without any of the bitterness that its name seems to advertise. Just about perfect for a happy hour beer that you don’t plan on nursing for two hours. BAers approve.

Back to those show dogs. The Double IPA from Stoudt’s jumps up on the table and demands attention – after the intensely hoppy nose, two things hit your palate: generous servings of malt transformed almost entirely into alcohol (10% ABV, with little to no sweetness left over), and the prodigious, bitter hopping needed to balance it. It seemed completely out of place in the middle of a happy-hour session, leaving me practically sated (boo) and thinking seriously that if I had a big (spicy) meal and just one beer to go with it this would make a great choice.

Stoudt\'s

This beer is yet another example of why I am so big on the Stoudt’s brand. I can get along with brewers who make a reputation warping familiar recipes, blending traditions and striking off in directions that appear practically insane (Dogfish Head), but brewers like Stoudt’s deserve equal credit for making definitive exemplars of familiar styles. I have already made the case that the Stoudt’s trippel is one of the most faithful examples of the Belgian style on this American continent and I had similar things to say about their bock. Now the Double IPA delivers just what the title promises: a superlative entry in American microbrewing’s headlong race to make the hoppiest IPA like, evah. BAers prefer the 90 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head but they’re still pretty big on the Stoudt’s.

Finally the Summer Beer from the godfather of American microbrweing, Anchor in San Francisco, delivers the season-appropriate denouement to a hot afternoon. Maybe it’s unfair to judge every wheat beer against the incomparable Hoegaarten, but as much as I enjoyed the airy, slightly sweet confection with pleasant hints of citrus I missed the unfiltered chewy haze that characterizes most Belgian beers. Nonetheless one of the better summer ales that I have tried and definitely an improvement over poseurs like Blue Moon.

Plame Game Goes Into Extra Innings

The Wilsons have filed a civil suit, accusing Cheney, Rove and Libby by name and leaving room for ten more defendants to be named later. Get your informed commentary here:

For me the most relevant question is whether the Plame case will go forward at all. Sooner or later the Jones v. Clinton precedent will kick this up to the Supreme Court. If the 1997 ruling stands then we can look forward to a three-ring circus of deposed officials and embarrassing revelations. If not, and remember that the poor soothsayers who wrote the Jones v. Clinton decision declared that a civil suit should not interfere too badly with the president’s job, then everybody can pretty much put away their toys and go home. God knows Jones interfered with the White House’s day-to-day operations (and then some), so until we know one way or another it won’t pay to get too worked up about this suit.

Specter Specters

by Tim F|  July 13, 20068:14 pm| 27 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

As predicted the new NSA bill will grant retroactive amnesty in return for the president notifying congress about domestic spying if and when he kind of sort of feels like it. Kevin Drum explains:

So the bill loosens requirements for wiretaps, thus giving the president more authority than he already has, and in return requires nothing new in the way of judicial review. Those must have been some truly tortuous negotiations, all right.

See also Glenn Greenwald.

Congratulations Arlen Specter, you are now a verb.

***Update***

Some confusion exists about whether Specter’s bill still contains the retroactive amnesty provision. If Specter removed it I feel roughly the same relief that I would feel if Specter merely gave the president permission to beat kittens unconscious but not kill them.

Israel Invades Lebanon

by Tim F|  July 13, 20062:53 pm| 655 Comments

This post is in: Foreign Affairs, War

I really don’t like the direction this conflict is going. Josh Marshall points out that being a lifelong civilian Israeli PM Olmert doesn’t have the freedom to downplay things that an old war horse like Sharon did. Kidnapping a foreign soldier is pretty obviously an act of war so I have precisely zero sympathy for the people who did it, but on the other hand provoking a wider conflict is precisely the point of what they did. Hezbollah had their big day when they kicked Israel out of Lebanon (in their own minds at least) and clearly they want a chance to do it again, plus bloodletting with Syria and Lebanon proper if they can finagle it. Bringing Iran into the fray would practically kill them with glee.

Needless to say the US very much does not need Israel in a shooting war right now and we really don’t want Iran in the mix. The latter case would pretty much precipitate our fast, bloody exit from Iraq and its fiercely Iran-friendly Shiite population.

So what now? I have no idea. Our leaders cannot very well ask Israel to measure its reaction to blatant terrrorist provocations while an unmeasured response pushes the entire middle east still farther towards chaos. Somewhere the old, marginalized bin Laden is rubbing his hands together and laughing hysterically.

***Update***

A brief sample of the most recent headlines:

Israel hits Beirut airport for 2nd time

Israel says it hit hundreds of Lebanon targets

Rockets hit Israeli city of Haifa

Israel blockades Lebanon, kills 53 civilians
