Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Second rate reporter says what?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Giving up is unforgivable.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Another Clinton Camp Meme Down in Flames

So much for the Rezko angle:

The couple who sold Barack Obama his Chicago home said the Illinois senator’s $1.65 million bid “was the best offer” and they didn’t cut their asking price because a campaign donor bought their adjacent land, according to e- mails between Obama’s presidential campaign and the seller.

The Illinois senator has said he made a “boneheaded” move in involving contributor Antoin “Tony” Rezko, a Chicago businessman, in the purchase of the property on June 15, 2005.

Rezko’s wife, Rita, also an Obama donor, bought the adjoining plot in Hyde Park from the couple, Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick, for the $625,000 asking price, the same day that Obama bought the house for $300,000 less than the asking price. Antoin Rezko was under federal investigation at the time.

Rezko was indicted on unrelated fraud charges 16 months later, in October 2006. Obama has since returned about $85,000 in campaign contributions made or raised by Rezko.

The sellers hadn’t previously made their side of the story public out of concern for their privacy, according to Bill Burton, a spokesman for Obama’s campaign. They approached Obama’s Senate office 15 months ago and agreed to break their silence now through the campaign out of concern that the story was being distorted in the media, Burton said.

As I was writing this post, I took a break and checked the comments to a previous post, and found this:

John Cole, the troll. Is there any other way to explain the hate you bring to the discussion?

I have a question that is only being touched on. Serious questions are being raised about Obama’s relations with Rezbo (sp?), and implications of criminality. Deny these as you will, but they exist. What happens, assuming Obama’s winning the Democratic nomination for president, when bush’s department of justice indicts him two weeks before the presidential election?

And there you have it, in all the glory it deserves- the Clinton way. Throw shit out there, and even if it doesn’t stick and you can’t even SPELL the name, you have weakened your opponent. Glorious, no? I fully expect the next few weeks will be full of this sort of crap, including more false charges of sexism and whatever other garbage they can drag up (the first time I heard of the similarities between Obama’s speeched and those of Patrick’s was in the comments here from a… Clinton supporter– would it surprise anyone if team Hillary is behind the latest attack on Obama in the press?).

This election can not end soon enough.

*** Update ***

That didn’t take long- they aren’t even hiding behind anonymous sources for the plagiarism BS:

Howard Wolfson, the Clinton campaign’s communications director, today accused Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) of committing “plagiarism” in a speech in Milwaukee on Saturday night.

Wolfson made the explosive charge in an interview with Politico after suggesting as much in a conference call with reporters.

On the call, Wolfson said: “Sen. Obama is running on the strength of his rhetoric and the strength of his promises and, as we have seen in the last couple of days, he’s breaking his promises and his rhetoric isn’t his own.”

If you are wondering how desparate this seems coming from the Clinton camp, and how lame the plagiarism charges are, let me point you to this- Captain Ed is not falling for them.

Some of the commenters are donating 5 bucks every time the Clinton camp does something sleazy. Here is where to donate.

Wait wait — Obama didn’t have a dream all on his own? Who is this King character and why can’t Obama have the decency to attribute his words to the proper author? Also, I’m pretty sure every word in his speech was written by someone else. I heard he has people on his staff that are paid to do nothing but write words for him to say, and he has NEVER properly attributed them in the midst of his speech.

You’d think a candidate who weathered years of phony Whitewater bullshit would be a little more reluctant to try the same tactics.

The best part about this ridiculous real estate deal “story” is that it was first dug up by Republicans to try and tarnish Obama a couple years ago. But now, like so much else, the Clintons have appropriated it from them.

In my cynical moments the entire HRC campaign reminds me of the proverbial drowning (wo)man; thrashing around so hard (s)he doesn’t care if (s)he drowns the other people nearby.

Not preparing for a post-Super Tuesday campaign. Blind-sided by Texas primary rules. Allowing Mark Penn out in public. All in all, I’d like to see Clinton’s people pay a little more attention to not making mistakes, and a little less to the nitpicky b.s.

Of course, while the HRC campaign is at it they may want to smack down MLK himself for plagiarizing!

What speech was it that King used the words:

And this will be the day — this will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning:

My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing.

Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride,

From every mountainside, let freedom ring!

And if America is to be a great nation, this must become true.

I do not understand these desperate measures on behalf of the HRC campaign. Does it really look that bleak out there? Tomorrow’s Wisconsin primary still looks close, and she has a decent advantage in TX, OH and PA.

I smell fear. But is it really warranted?

    The MUP also transcends argument.

“Who knows who I am? The point is more important than whose argument it is,” said Mr. Patrick, who telephoned The New York Times at the request of the Obama campaign. “It’s a transcendent argument.”

Obama’s continuing use of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in his speeches is proof of the worst kind of plagiarism.

His theft of the word “dream” from Martin Luther King, his theft of the word “we” from JFK and his blatant theft of the the word “Americans” from FDR disqualifies him from holding office.

No disrespect to twenty-one year olds whatsoever but, it seems that Hillary is hoping to hijack the nomination if need be and her sycophants are attempting to throw a veil of legitimacy over the process.

Good gravy, her campaign reeks of desperation. Every day, I become less and less inclined to vote for her should she win the nomination. I’d rather stay at home than support these tactics. All she has to do is hammer home the more experience line (her best angle of attack), but no, she’d rather use the same kind of stuff that she and her husband had to face in the 1990s. I expect within the next week for her to accuse Obama of being a sexual predator who killed two kids on train tracks in Illinois while shredding files related to his travel office.

The Clintons do not appear to be gracious losers and we can expect that anything in the least bit suspicious about Obama’s past will get tossed out there by them before the convention. I asked Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson and Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass, if they could assure the public that neither Clinton nor McGovern has ever done what Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, did when he used the rhetoric of Gov. Deval Patrick without footnoting him.

    They would not.

In fact, Wolfson seemed to say it wouldn’t be as big a deal if it were discovered that Clinton had “lifted” such language.

“Sen. Clinton is not running on the strength of her rhetoric,” Wolfson said.

I disagree with Cap Ed… I think what Obama did was effectively plagiarism. Plagiarism isn’t just about exact words, but ideas…and in this case, the idea of “Are these famous phrases ‘just words’?” and phrasing it pretty much like the previous speaker did…that would count as plagiarism. Think about how comedians fiercely defend their comedic routines. If someone did a 7 Dirty Words bit and used slighly different dirty words (like “cocklicker” rather than “cocksucker”), you wouldn’t call that person a Carlin-ripoff?

But I don’t think this will hurt Obama much. It’s the Internet age…most of the young people who support Obama have probably done something similar when writing their term papers.

Sadly, I can’t, yet. Fortunately, 70% of HRC’s donors are tapped out, and 3% of Obama’s are. Much like the delegates, the math is just not really on her side.

Really? Interesting. Do you have a link?

    Danon Says:
But I don’t think this will hurt Obama much. It’s the Internet age…most of the young people who support Obama have probably done something similar when writing their term papers.

First of all, it’s more than a bit trollish to assume that all Obama supporters are still in school, or for that matter that all young people are cheaters. That aside, your remark is still pretty dumb, because there’s a big difference between plagiarism in writing and “plagiarism” in improvised remarks.

Think about how comedians fiercely defend their comedic routines. If someone did a 7 Dirty Words bit and used slighly different dirty words (like “cocklicker” rather than “cocksucker”), you wouldn’t call that person a Carlin-ripoff?

Not if Carlin suggested the fucking routine, mentioning it killed for him when he did it.

Obama’s published numbers are going to be in the realm of 500k donations and $60m+ in about two months’ time.

That averages out to around $120 per donation. The limit per person is $2300 until the convention.

I’d say the math in Obama’s realm is pretty favorable to him. Even if these are just ballpark numbers, he has a vast reserve of little-guy capital out there.

But what if Carlin called up another comic and said “Hey, you should do your own “7 dirty words” routine”? Would that be plagiarism then, even if the other comic did not attribute the routine to Carlin?

    From the NYT:

“Both men had anticipated that Mr. Obama’s rhetorical strength would provide a point of criticism. Mr. Patrick said he told Mr. Obama that he should respond to the criticism, and he shared language from his campaign with Mr. Obama’s speechwriters.

Mr. Patrick said he did not believe Mr. Obama should give him credit.”

I was going to go in to politics, but I realized that all of the good words and phrases have been used by someone else. Since anything I would try to say could be construed as plagiarism, there was no sense in running.

What we need is a book that attributes words and phrases to those who first used them. Then everyone agree to never use these words in any form of communication. That ought to lead to lots of grunting and squealing as that is all that would be left to do, make odd sounds because everyone else owns the rest of the language.

I am waiting for the next Clinton attack where she accuses Obama of being a human, but since she is older than he is then he copied her but changed the sex to confuse people.

    Yeah, thats the ticket!

If Pat and Obama agreed beforehand that they should share each other’s speeches, then that’s fine with me. But that was a revelation that came AFTER Clinton complained, so as much as I hate Clinton, I don’t think it’s fair to jump to shooting the messenger. I was only debating Cap’n Ed’s point that what Obama did (whether he got consent from Pat or not) wasn’t plagiarism because “how many other ways could he have said the same thing?” It’s not just words, but concepts too.

And @ Cyrus, you’re right, I was wrong to imply that all of Obama’s supporters are still in school…(although I would argue his most fervent base is either in school or was in it at the time that the Internet changed academic research). I should’ve said, in this day of the Internet where copyrights are passe, Obama’s slight lifting won’t seem to most as a capital crime.

I do have one problem with Obama’s particular choice in speeches. He shouldn’t ever draw attention to the criticism that his campaign is merely strong rhetoric, especially with a rebuttal that points to words that are much more interesting and inspirational than anything he’s said so far.

Speaking of rancid Clinton memes, I’m getting sick of this one:

Hinojosa saw another reason for Clinton to be concerned about the caucuses: The working-class voters who have typically favored her candidacy could be too tired or too busy to vote during the day and then return after 7 p.m. to attend a caucus.

Variations of this one have been thrown out in every caucus state: Clinton didn’t lose because she lacks charisma, or because she ran a crappy ground game, she lost because the downtrodden workers who support her (And whose wages she will garnish if they don’t buy health insurance) are too tired to come out for her. That’s right: none of us who support Obama have jobs and families.

I’ve only been working for forty-four years(more than half of it blue collar), been married for thirty years, and we’re raising an autistic child. I can’t believe that I still feel that Clinton stinks on ice.

    Tool.

Iam going to let you all in on a little secret. When Erick Erickson says something, you should not pay attention to what he says, but rather WHY he is saying it. I know that can be hard, what with all his idiotic quotes as of late. But you need to understand why he is saying what he is saying.

For example, the whole “we need money because teh left stole all the programmers” was widely ridiculed, as it should be. But the reason he was saying that is because he knows the best way to fund raise in his circles is to be the victim- then the money will roll in. See also, War on Christmas, Justice Sunday, etc.

Same with this. Why is he saying this? Because he knows how much support Obama is actually getting from the online left as well as mainstream America, so he needs to try to create a rift or the appearance of a rift. With any luck, the other members of the right-wing meme machine will be repeating this, and Chris Matthews, by weeks end, will be asking if “the left” really doesn’t like Obama.

Always question the “why” with Erick. Always.

I saw that too. A brilliant piece.

Erick first starts off with the known truth that came to him the online left hates Obama. Several of their own commenters say not true. Erick then tacks with something like “okay, but the big names don’t.” Some point out Kos voted for Obama and other holes in his “thinking.” Not to be deterred, Erick then comes back with a gem…

There is a difference between the readers/users of online sites and the leadership of those same sites. The latter group is in Hillary’s pocket, even though they take pains to stress otherwise.

Shorter Erick: They’re all in Hillary’s pocket even though they encourage support and vote for Obama. You can always count on the deep thinkers at RedState for the comedy.

Iam going to let you all in on a little secret. When Erick Erickson says something, you should not pay attention to what he says, but rather WHY he is saying it. I know that can be hard, what with all his idiotic quotes as of late.

Never been a secret. Tards like Erick are about as “deep” as Bush. They’ve always been the “if you build the narrative, the reality will come” snake oil believers. It’s always worked so well. Take Iraq for example. The new shining country on the hill. They have faith they’re building reality one narrative at a time. They see the big picture.

A lot hinges on the effectiveness of the recent negative advertisements that Hillary Clinton ran. Ignorant voters in the under-30-years-old group have flocked to Barack Hussein Obama. Because they are ignorant, they base their decisions on emotion. These under-30-years-old voters are drawn to the inspirational speeches — by Barack Hussein Obama.

I cannot figure out why Americans support Barack Obama. Decent orator, sure. But President of the United States? I don’t think so. Examine his Illinois and U.S. Senate record and you will discover it void of any significant accomplishments. John, your response to my comment which you highlighted is inadequate. Unfortunately, you’ve muddied the issue by accusing me of being a Clinton supporter without evidence. What upsets me is you and others like you slinging all the crap, rather than supporting a reasoned discussion. I’m waiting to make up my mind, but I find the going pretty hard.

I don’t think there is any doubt that wingers are involved in the attacks on Clinton in the sites where Clinton attacks are prominent. Wingers will have a hard time finding valid avenues to attack Clinton if she is the Democratic nominee. Clinton will destroy McCain in debates.

Obama is vulnerable. Somebody has come up with a story of his innocence, but all that is window dressing. The real proof will be when he is officially absolved of all wrongdoing, when investigations have stopped with official acknowledgment of no wrong doing on his part. Until then, Obama is a lousy choice for Democrats.

Until the discussion is cleaned up, I will suggest anybody who introduces virilent ant-Clinton invective a troll, a winger stooge who is in the discussion to introduce anti-Clinton hate. That doesn’t make me pro or anti Clinton. You nor anybody else doesn’t know who I am for, simply because I haven’t made up my mind.

Lost, probably forever, is the real story: Patrick and Obama share the same campaign strategist, David Axelrod; Patrick ran a very similar yes-we-can high-on-rhetoric but vague-on-specifics campaign in 1996; and, the punch line, Patrick’s actual performance has horrified a large percentage of his former activist support. The real issue is Patrick’s feel-good campaign strategy being a test run for Obama’s, and that’s lost in this absurd “plagiarism” charge. So, is this ineptness on one side or a Roveian leak on the other?

That’s it! I through with this blog too. The blatant anti-Yawb spin around here is disgusting!

Fuck you guys! The blatant anti-anti-Hillary-anti-pro-Obama-anti-anti-Yawb spin around here is revolting. I’m staying!

Until the discussion is cleaned up, I will suggest anybody who introduces virilent ant-Clinton invective a troll, a winger stooge who is in the discussion to introduce anti-Clinton hate. That doesn’t make me pro or anti Clinton.

OK. It does make you an idiot, though.

So the online left hates Obama? Right…

    One question.

Is there any major republican blog that supported McCain from the start? As a second choice? As a third choice?
Is there any major republican blog right now that supports McCain for a reason other than that he is going to win the republican primary?

Maybe Erick should take a long look into a mirror…

So, is using a colon in a sentence, anal?

    Just asking.

Could be. “Pugnacious Punctuation” is all the rage. No telling how many isms were violated by this recent NY Times story:

Semicolon sightings in the city are unusual, period, much less in exhortations drafted by committees of civil servants. In literature and journalism, not to mention in advertising, the semicolon has been largely jettisoned as a pretentious anachronism.

Americans, in particular, prefer shorter sentences without, as style books advise, that distinct division between statements that are closely related but require a separation more prolonged than a conjunction and more emphatic than a comma.

“When Hemingway killed himself he put a period at the end of his life,” Kurt Vonnegut once said. “Old age is more like a semicolon.”

    Full story here:

Celebrating the Semicolon in a Most Unlikely Location

We would do it every time Bush did something sleazy or you said something stupid, but we would go broke.

Wow, the old “I know you are but what am I?!” with a twist of “You’re a stupid-head!” I don’t think of responses like that as grade-school stuff, I prefer to think of them as “classics.”

Seriously, though, I’ll bet that in the days before The Sullification of BJ, even you could identify That Olde Clinton Sleaze.

    Let me test that theory.

Well, that took me a whole 10 seconds:

I vote for Republicans. I think Democrats as a whole, and now it seems to the individual, are corrupt, vile, and evil. I thought with the passing of Clinton, they would rehab themselves from the years of lying and deceit. I was wrong.

    Heh.

You have been here a lot today

    Oh, just slumming.

It was funny — Jeff has those random vanity quotes in the upper left, and the other day it was something like “The best blog in the universe is back after a lengthy hiatus — John Cole.” Ahhhh, before you caught Teh Sully, you were all good.

Anyway, the deal is, you actually have two viewable threads on BJ today, since you’ve had to stop your wall-to-wall-to-ceiling-to-floor-to-attic-to-sub-basement coverage of the GOP nomination (which was just not as civil as the squeaky-clean Dem race, remember?).

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush urged disgruntled conservatives on Monday to rally around John McCain, calling their criticism of the Republican presidential front-runner “grossly unfair.”

The Asshat married to the BitchWitch is seven years late with that.

Here is a good campaign slogan for Yawn: A vote for Yawn McCain is a vote against a Democrat.

Here is a good campaign slogan for Yawn: A vote for Yawn McCain is a vote against a Democrat.

Remember back in ’04 when we didn’t have much of a candidate and the Democratic Slogan basically boiled down to “Anybody but Bush!” Man, that was a Dem landslide, that election was. I bet you’ll have about as easy a time throwing President Kerry out of the White House this turn around.

Tbone: “OK. It does make you an idiot, though.”

How so? Saying it doesn’t make it so. There is plenty of information out there to make reasoned discussions. Folks who don’t want to make reasoned discussions, or can’t, come across as people who are anti-Hillary. Wingers are the most anti-Hillary, because in my opinion they fear Hillary as a nominee, and as a president. Wingers are lying and mendacious creeps who will do anything to get elected, including populating blogs like this to influence against whomever they think is the most danger to them.

My concern is that Obama is vulnerable and will remain vulnerable until he is fully absolved legally. Until he is and all investigations are concluded then he will be open to indictment by bush and his department of justice minions. The record shows these people lie and will do anything to game the system. Seems to me to be simple logic. Or I may be wrong. But I’m waiting to hear why this scenario is not possible.

So in January 2005 Rezko’s wife, Rita, also an Obama donor, bought the adjoining plot in Hyde Park from the couple, Fredric Wondisford and Sally Radovick, for the $625,000 asking price. In January 2006, Rita Rezko sold the Obamas one-sixth of the lot, for $104,500, to expand their yard. She later sold the rest of the land to Michael Sreenan, who said by e-mail yesterday that he bought it in late December 2006 for $575,000.

In less than 2 years time Mrs. Rezko made $54,500 on a $625,000 real estate investment and somehow this was a favor to Obama? That just doesn’t wash. Isn’t making money the purpose of making real estate investments? Won’t stop Taylor Marsh from lying about it though.

until he is fully absolved legally

You can’t be “fully absolved legally” unless you were to be charged with something, have a trial, and be found not guilty. Courts do not go around pre-emptively absolving people because there is an inaccurate internet meme going around. What crime, pray tell, would Obama be charged with here?

wow, I used to frequent TalkLeft during the Libby trial for legal opinions….I just noticed they are deleting non-offensive comments…I had just read one detailing the speech writer commonality and how the fanatic Clinton supporters should quit harping on red state delegates and voters as lesser entities and how any other states outside of Cali/NY etc don’t matter…I refreshed it 5 mins later and poof it was gone!

It wasn’t offensive in any way, only offering a coherent rebuttal with a few facts and it was erased.

I am never going back to that site again, except to watch the trainwreck…and I’m not even a citizen of the US, but that type of behaviour is very undemocratic and repugnant.

Poor EEEL. He’s suffering — the Dems are having a vicious full party argument about which of two people will be nominated, and are actually talking about things like strategy and personnel instead of policy differences…because both candidates are completely acceptable to the party on policy.

Even worse, everybody has already said that they’ll work for the winner no matter who he or she is.

There’s no real and important disagreement; there’s no deep circular firing squad; we’re arguing because somebody has to win and somebody has to lose, and nobody likes losing — not because some constituency in the party is threatening to bolt and form a third part, or because some overblown SpaceGhostMedium is saying that he can’t vote for one of the candidates because…well, just because.

I feel for you, EEEL. I really do.

Poor EEEL. He’s suffering—the Dems are having a vicious full party argument about which of two people will be nominated, and are actually talking about things like strategy and personnel instead of policy differences

Strategy and personnel? Are you joking? When you have no policy, it’s hard to disagree on policy, true. But Hillary and Barack are talking about racist code-language, plagiarism, who’s all talk, who’s lying, and who’s gotten the most dirty money from the biggest sleazes… not personnel. You sound like John last week. Do you get all your news from this site?

So if you think I am suffering, you’re smoking even more crack than usual. What’s better than watching Donks’ identity groups tear each other to shreds? Conceivably, it’s only just beginning — wait until the Desperation Days start. Because they’ve scheduled such a late convention, that means the acrimony could come to a boil about two months before the general election. Good luck picking up those pieces!

Of course, Obama could wrap it up next week, and then I’ll have to be satisfied with watching the Clintons suffer through Greatest Political Smackdown Ever. And who won’t enjoy that?
