During the top story on Lou Dobbs, a reporter discussing the off-shore drilling stated the following (and I paraphrase):
Bush is pushing the drilling issue because he fears a recession may tarnish his legacy…
Yeah, a failed war, the worst natural disaster response in modern history, a tattered Justice Department, a broken military, a decimated budget and trillions of additional debt, the taint of torture, an exposed CIA spy, a history of domestic spying, the insertion of religious nuts and unqualified hacks throughout every level of his administration, and a ruined reputation abroad and Bush is worried about a recession ruining his legacy?
I need a drink.
Better make that a celebratory drink, John. Per Dave Weigel at Reason, Larry Sinclair has been arrested by the DC Metro Police and charged as a fugitive from justice. Score one for the good guys.
he may be worried about his legacy with the oil companies.
John, I think my head just exploded. Seriously, you shouldn’t post things like that when people are likely to be in office-like environments where strings of explitives are prohibited. Its kind of like holding in the biggest sneeze you’ve ever had.
And for the love of GOD, could this man justforonce CARE about something other than his ‘legacy’???????
that only partially helps- here let me try this:
okay that feels somewhat better,
hopefully Blondie +1 soon

dee dee deeee!
Well you’re gonna need another drink. Sorry about not embedding the link, I’ll read your tutorial from last week when I get a minute. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/6/18/182915/834/930/538074
I second what Blondie said.
The real interesting this is that you dont turn the TV off when Lou Dobbs is on.
that actually made me laugh……
the only thing he is worried about is whether the oil companies will pay him to be their “spokesman”
Lou Dobbs may be the only person on tv today who will have less of a legacy than George Bush.
The man is a buffoon.
Lou Dobbs is the main reason I don’t watch CNN anymore.
It’s the Economy, Stupid!
A recession would be a legacy improvement over the depression Bush is setting us up for.
Don’t forget twiddling our thumbs for eight years as the evidence for global warming became compelling and we approached a global energy crises. That’s what people will curse us for 20 years from now.
slippy hussein toad
This is kind of like one of those family annihilators standing over the corpses of his wife and seven children that he’s just methodically murdered one by one, their blood congealing in his carpet, their mouths agape with the eternal question of why, wondering if people will think he was short-tempered that morning at the McDonald’s drive-through.
I mean, FUCK. The compartmentalization that Bush has to engage in to not gouge his own wrists with a spoon on an hourly basis over the horrific trainwreck he’s piloted this country into must be water-fucking-tight.
Lou Dobbs-the Joe Biden of television.
Isn’t this his second recession?
I think an entire keg is in order.
So does he think drilling will prevent a recession? Or does he think he won’t be blamed for it if he’s seen to be attempting to do something about it?
Just Some Fuckhead
God no, John. He is not worried about ruining his legacy. He is worried about getting it tarnished. Imagine his legacy as a big beautiful brass bowling trophy. You are suggesting he is worried about it falling off the shelf and smashing into many unfixable pieces. Not so, he is worried about getting a smudge on that baby.
This would be recession #2 under Bush’s watch.
Here’s to Iraqis ruining Bush’s retirement. Good hunting.
Rick, I was wondering the same thing. I mean, clearly the drilling won’t prevent a recession, so the only thing I can figure is he hopes it’ll provide some sort of distraction. “Sure, he wrecked the economy and our reputation and he killed a bunch of people in a pointless war, but at least he managed to trash some of our unspoiled environmental areas so we could put off doing anything about getting beyond oil for a couple more years.”
...now I try to be amused
Makes sense to me. We’re talking about Oedipus Tex here, the president who did everything his father wouldn’t do and wouldn’t do anything his father did do. To go out with a recession like his old man will bug him like his unique fuck-ups don’t.
here’s the quote:
HENRY: A clear attempt to spread political blame from a president fearful a recession could mar his legacy, but Democrat Barack Obama fired back that offshore drilling will not help lower gas prices in the short-term.
and here’s fat lou propelling the propaganda:
DOBBS: Yes, but at the same time, you say it might make it more difficult. There’s no question that Senator McCain here, Ed, has stepped out in front on both of these issues and has taken the leadership on both the construction of new nuclear power plants and lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling. Those are two tremendous stakes to drive in the ground on the issue of public policy concerning energy.
HENRY: They certainly could, especially in terms of more drilling. That could increase supply and lower the prices. The problem right now, as you know, is that Democrats on the Hill are completely vehemently opposed to it. So at this time, both sides are sort of posturing on the issue, but neither side really has a way to actually move forward on it at this point. Lou.
DOBBS: Well there’s a straight-forward issue here that seems where you have further differentiation between these two candidates just when we thought there would be none, but on this issue the Democrats will have to obstruct those efforts to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling and it appears most Americans are not in the mood for that kind of obstructionism by either party.
John, let’s not forget that the the most successful terrorist attack on the face of the planet occurred on his watch also — even after being told about it. The rest wouldn’t have happened without this.
Easiest fix ever. I am aware of all these internet traditions for fixing posts.
Speaking of responses to natural disasters, I loved The Daily Show’s segment on the flooding last night. George Bush hates white people!
Not to worry, They’ll just blame the recession on Clinton and the Democrats.
They’re already trying to blame the high gas prices on the Democrats in Congress.
yam wrote, John, let’s not forget that the the most successful terrorist attack on the face of the planet occurred on his watch also—even after being told about it.
Like Just Some Fuckhead, said – Tarnish??? I don’t think big steaming turds tarnish.
Bush’s legacy is secure.
If this is to avoid the legacy of a [2nd] recession then he’s a bigger moron than I thought.
The U.S. Government’s Energy Information Agency says:
1) Drilling wouldn’t start before 2017.
2) The total produced from offshore drilling will raise the US’s oil production by 1.5-3%.
3) The difference it will make in world oil prices is “insignificant”.
You can read it here: http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html
Add to that the fact that the oil crisis is also partially caused by lack of refining capacity and too few tankers to transport the stuff.
I don’t think he is trying to avoid a recession. The New York Times has an editorial on it that seems to suggest other motives:
