Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Fight them, without becoming them!

In my day, never was longer.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

No one could have predicted…

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

“They all knew.”

Republicans in disarray!

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Friedman tells McCain to suck on this:

John McCain recently tried to underscore his seriousness about pushing through a new energy policy, with a strong focus on more drilling for oil, by telling a motorcycle convention that Congress needed to come back from vacation immediately and do something about America’s energy crisis. “Tell them to come back and get to work!” McCain bellowed.

Sorry, but I can’t let that one go by. McCain knows why.

It was only five days earlier, on July 30, that the Senate was voting for the eighth time in the past year on a broad, vitally important bill — S. 3335 — that would have extended the investment tax credits for installing solar energy and the production tax credits for building wind turbines and other energy-efficiency systems.

Both the wind and solar industries depend on these credits — which expire in December — to scale their businesses and become competitive with coal, oil and natural gas. Unlike offshore drilling, these credits could have an immediate impact on America’s energy profile.

Senator McCain did not show up for the crucial vote on July 30, and the renewable energy bill was defeated for the eighth time. In fact, John McCain has a perfect record on this renewable energy legislation. He has missed all eight votes over the last year — which effectively counts as a no vote each time. Once, he was even in the Senate and wouldn’t leave his office to vote.

Well, he was busy chanting “DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!” while Cindy was dancing in the Miss Buffalo Chip, so he does have an excuse.

You’re missing the big story. The RNC is keeping tabs on Obama and they just sent out a bulletin! OBAMA SAW THE DARK KNIGHT!!!! How can we elect a man who saw the same movie that everyone else saw?

    Sheesh.

Maybe if there was an amendment allowing drilling on the sun, he would vote for it.

Am I the only person to think McCain simply doesn’t get policy ? He doesn’t seem to care at all. Looks like his campaign amounts to “Vote for me, I am not Obama”.

    Good luck with that.

This absolutely is their campaign strategy. Making the election a referendum on Obama (as opposed to Bush) is their only hope.

Policy is about how to govern. McCain, and the GOP generally, is about how to rule.

Policy is irrelevant — the trick is to seize control of the state, and use its coercive powers to make yourself, your friends and relations rich, and to use its punitive power to punish those who aren’t yourself, your friends and relations, just because you can, and because they’re not yourself, your friends and relations.

In other words, party like it’s 1099.

If you’re going to drag us back into the Middle Ages, couldn’t we please have the High Middle Ages?

Wait. You mean the McCane ad with the wind mills and the sun coming up where he claims to be for (or just be) smart renewable energy isn’t true?

    Shocking.

Looks like his campaign amounts to “Vote for me, I am not Obama an African-American who wants to sex your hot chicks”.

    Fixxle.

Let me guess, he did NOT learn this information by listening to or reading the MSM

Is that THE Friedman? Inventor of THE FRIEDMAN UNIT?”
Did it ake him six months to come up with that column?

By the way, Jake, any good Southerner can tell you that we don’t spread the notion of the dark people wanting to have sex with our white wimmen folk because it’s true. We do it out of respect for our wimmen folk. We don’t want them to know that we know its them that’s wantin to have sex with
the dark fellers. Hell, men of any color will have sex with anything, feathers and wool be damned.

The RNC is keeping tabs on Obama and they just sent out a bulletin! OBAMA SAW THE DARK KNIGHT !

    New GOP slogan:

It is a dangerous world out there – how are the Democrats going to protect you if they don’t know how to act like creepy stalkers.

Vote for the Big Brother is watching you Creepy Stalker party for a safer world!

On second thought, maybe following Obama around and announcing what movies he likes to watch is part of a well thought out strategy.
Sort of like in Scene 21 from Monty Python & The Holy Grail, just after the Knights of the Round Table have been mauled by the Vorpal Rabbit:

    ARTHUR:
Right. How many did we lose?
    LAUNCELOT:
    Gawain.
    GALAHAD:
    Ector.
    ARTHUR:
    And Bors. That’s five.
    GALAHAD:
    Three, sir.
    ARTHUR:
Three. Three. And we’d better not risk another frontal assault. That rabbit’s dynamite.
    ROBIN:
Would it help to confuse it if we run away more?
    ARTHUR:
Oh, shut up and go and change your armour.
    GALAHAD:
Let us taunt it! It may become so cross that it will make a mistake.
    ARTHUR:
    Like what?
    GALAHAD:
    Well… ooh.

And if that doesn’t work GOP, here’s the next suggestion for a campaign strategy: go after Obama’s daughters.

America really likes bullies who pick on little girls. That will win you a ton of votes.

I can think of a bunch of reasons why, but I got a bad feeling today. CW coming out of a bunch of peoples mouths is that John McCain is going to walk away with the election. They say all the undecided are gonna break for McCain.

I’ve heard different reasons for why and I don’t feel like unpacking any of them or even addressing them yet, but it’s bad news in itself that this message is going anywhere for any reason. The very definition of an independent is someone who does what CW says to do.

Well, he was busy chanting “DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!” while Cindy was dancing in the Miss Buffalo Chip, so he does have an excuse.

Uh, senators running for president are often absent from the senate, like say Obama. This is trivial. By the way if you have any evidence that Cindy McCain was dancing in the contest, please post it.

I appreciate that you used to be a Republican and are now a Democrat, but is it really necessary to post such inane things ?

list of the number of missed votes for each quarter of this year. Interesting results.

Q1 2008 85 votes took place in the Senate

    McCain missed 50 (58.8%)
    Obama missed 31 (36.5%)

Q2 2008 77 votes took place in the Senate

McCain missed 76 (98.7%) (only showed up once!)
    Obama missed 65 (84.4%)

Q3 2008 20 votes have taken place so far

    McCain missed 20 (100.0%)
    Obama missed 14 (70%)

Truthfully, neither candidate is showing up much (to be expected when running for president) but I was extremely suprised to find out that McCain has only showed up to vote ONCE in the past FOUR MONTHS!!!

most people that only showed up for work 1 day in the last 4 months while trying to get a new job ,would undoubtly be out of work by now as their employer would no doubt find it more than trivial
