Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

This fight is for everything.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

So the missile protection system that we’re going to put in Poland is in case al Qaeda gets ICBMs? How can they get away with saying it? Don’t people own maps anymore?

Atrios notes that Jackson Brown is sueing the GOP for stealing his song and using it in Ohio. The song? “Running on Empty”. I can’t really think of a more fitting song for the GOP, including their method of acquistion.

I just want to state, for the record, that when I first started college I intended to be an Electrical Engineer.

After about a year of that, I decided to switch to Computer Science. Why? Because ComSci had way more beautiful women in class.

Ok, now many of you are saying… wait, 4 women out of a 100 isn’t that great of odds, and that’s true. But it’s way better than this!

Does anyone else get the impression that McCain has no control over his own campaign? More and more it’s looking like his circle of staff and advisors are running things (rather badly) and he’s just “going with the flow”?

Admittedly Obama has his own wide circle of advisors and staff, but I always get the impression that the core message is coming from the canidiate and is filtered and refined by the staff.

With McCain it’s more like he’s getting some notes on “the important topics” and is just filling in the gaps when he’s pretty sure he’s on message.

Question: Republicans seem to be making their major theme that Obama will raise taxes. This has been the Republican theme for just about forever. Are Americans going to care about this stuff anymore or is this getting to be tiresome?

Cap and Gown said: Are Americans going to care about this stuff anymore or is this getting to be tiresome

Sort answer is yes. Everyone will care about taxes. (Just like everyone is going to care about death.) Income is very much a “It’s my money” sort of issue. And the threat that your income will be diminished is always a good fear tactic.

Of course when the party that’s using that tactic is the same one that generally diminished the buying power of those untaxed dollars it rings a little hollow.

There was a chapter in the “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” where the king, disguised as a commoner tours his lands. He finds one village where folks get a low wage, but have to pay low prices for bread. In this town the people are envious of the high wages of their neighbors. On visiting that neighboring town the king finds that the people are indeed paid twice as much, but he also learns that they have to pay five times as much for bread. When the king mentions this to a group of the “highly paid” villagers they turn on him for suggesting they give up their higher wages.

    The more things change.

Down here in SoCal LowCal, bodysurfing is cool and these pics of Obama show he’s got good form. But is the rest of the country gonna think that? These pics remind me of Kerry windsurfing. But I say, F the rest of the country if they can’t handle a President who gets it wet. Beats clearing brush for fun or cow tipping.

Consider — if you were pretty sure that all your criminal acts, all your directed theft, graft, and mayhem from Iraq, and a myriad of other prosecutible acts were much, MUCH more likely to be investigated if Obama wins the election, is it tin-foil hat area to believe there may be more to this than what we know?

IOW, if you’ve already covered up Iraqi deaths, Gitmo deaths, Afghani deaths, wireless tapping of Democrats, reporters, and foreign diplomats, would capping the Democratic nommy in order to stay out of The Hague be so out-of-line?

I loved the Russian general’s threat that Poland would be targeted now at the start of any nuclear attack. As if the Poles would have nothing to worry about otherwise.

It’s clearly not a-Q that the missile defense is for, but the Persians. Though I agree it is transparently clear its meant for the Russians and Chinese as well.

My heavens — I’d almost forgotten what you all looked like, it’s been so long.

So yeah, Russia’s having a lot of fun poking the U.S. with a sharp stick, while all Bush can say is “Ow! Stop that!”

Kind of too bad that since 9/11, Bush has squandered your military along with a large chunk of your international goodwill.

Interesting side note: I hosted a tour group from North Carolina the other day, and while chit-chatting, found out that out of the 20 of them, 19 of them desperately want Obama to be elected. The 20th was asking what I thought about Islamic extremism.

McCain: Georgia is “first serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War”

Er? what does he call 2 planes slamming into one of the tallest buildings in the world and a third slamming into the Pentagon? I mean, it was an international incident considering a foreign entity planned and executed a stunning attack… I guess it’s a ‘somewhat serious crisis”, tanks attacking a small crappy country on the border of Russia is much more important. Someone should call him on it.

The old fool is so busy trying to use the war as some kind of way to beef up his credential that he’s set up some kind of faux administration to deal with it. He’s trying hard to upstage the president. haha.
