Gregory has had his moments, but he seems to suffer from Beltway Syndrome as bad as anyone. Oh well.
Dennis - SGMM
All that means is that I will continue to not-watch MTP. Other than Fareed Zakaria’s "GPS," the Sunday shows are dead to me.
robertdsc
He should ask Obama a question in French just to tick off Dubya a second time.
Hugh
DEAD TO ME! I thought that line needed a bit more drama to make it work.
Comrade Jake
There was about ten minutes of Brokaw and Gregory running on and on about how great MTP is, how big their responsibility is, yadda yadda yadda.
This has really become a pretty mediocre program folks. Every once in awhile they land the big guest, like this morning, to make it worth watching. Otherwise? Not so much, really.
The Grand Panjandrum
I still remember when Gregory was a reporter on the CBS affiliate in Albuquerque. Now he’s just another unwatchable inside the beltway establishment media type.
Dennis - SGMM
@Hugh:
You’re right. If I’m going to use a ghastly cliche then at least I should use it properly. My only excuse is that I was still on my first cup of coffee when I commented.

@Dennis – SGMM:
Zakaria asks the only intelligent questions on Sunday morning tv these days.
Maybe Gregory will grow into the thing. Right now, he seems to think interviewing is the art of constant interruption.
Joshua Norton
This is the most brilliant idea since CBS hired Katie Couric.
Another hair-do thinks they can play at being Very Serious.

Hyperion
but somehow the question of who will host this piece o’crap is worthy of two posts.
i guess because it will be followed by future posts expressing either outrage or agreement with gregory and/or his guests. who the fuck cares? MTP sucks and water is wet. who knew? not Cole, evidently. no, wait. he DOES know but posts again anyway. blog fatigue?
Dennis - SGMM
@Hyperion:
Nothing’s stopping you from putting up your own blog.

Watching the McLaughlin group right now – first, they added Michael Steele to replace Buchanan … ugh …. Steele is pure party line.
Second, they just had a five minute discussion of Obama saying in a speech that the US is *a* world leader …. not the world leader.
I wish someone had said "the world leader in what …. debt?"

Rumor has it that in order to freshen up the show and appeal to a younger demographic there will be a new theme song sung by M.C. Rove and will feature Rove’s back up dancer David Gregory dancing in front of a blue screen.
Schweeet.

Hmmm Another sunday talk show to add to the do not watch list, along with all the others on my do not watch list, which is no problem since I hven’t been watching them anyway, I find it much easier to just read about them on the blogs and not have to endure the torture of actually hearing their bleatings.
ChrisB
@TheHatOnMyCat: Gregory’s been going backwards recently, and rather precipitously at that. He had some good moments as White House correspondent, then he backed up Rove at the correspondents’ dinner and has been unwatchable on Race for the White House/1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
You’re right about Zakaria, which obviously disqualifies him for the job.
Balconespolitics
Come on – does anyone believe Gregory would have had a chance in hell at getting the MTP lead had he NOT been going backwards for awhile?
I sometime think GE’s main criteria for approving a MTP host is someone who has history that wingnuts can point to and label as "liberal", but who has shown themselves to be an obedient lapdog, particularly on economic issues.
Come to think of it, that doesn’t winnow the list down much, does it?
Sam H.
Gregory is rubbish. He’ll put the final nail in the MTP coffin. How disappointing.
Brian J
This is a very unsubstantial criticism, but Michael Steele always looks like his suits don’t fit him and like he was Larry David who decided to spend a week locked in a tanning bed. He doesn’t strike me as a particularly odious conservative spokesman by what he says, but by the bizarre, almost facetious appearance he has.
Brian J
I don’t really have a strong opinion of Gregory one way or the other, so I’ll give him a chance as host before I render a verdict. I’ll be interested to see if he takes the criticisms being thrown his way as a challenge or merely as chattering that can be ignored. Of course, I don’t usually watch "Meet the Press" unless it’s the 2:00 AM repeat on MSNBC.
For all those are disappointed it’s not Chuck Todd or Rachel Maddow, I’d be thankful. Both are great, in different ways, but Todd’s not really a journalist so much as he is an analyst. He was fantastic during this past election, and I’d rather have him available to do that than to try to become something he’s not. As for Maddow, I don’t think she ever had a shot, unfortunately. She’s intelligent and reasonable, but her politics are clear, and there’s no way that the network heads would sign on for that. Besides, she seems to have a particular style that is suited for cable. I’d rather have her where she is.
Like I said before, I don’t really watch the show, so it’s not as if I have a dog in this fight, but I’d rather the people at NBC pick a few different hosts to shake up the format. It’s probably never going to happen, however.
J.
Chuck Todd?! Eh. Chucky T (and his facial hair) did nothing for me during the election. Personally, I was hoping for Gwen Ifill, but I think Gregory was probably NBC’s best/safest option, and I wish "Stretch" well, though I guess this means no more Tom Brokaw impressions.

Zakaria’s show really is good. The other shows are crap.
Punchy
People still wake up on Sunday and watch these programs? Holy shit.
What can you get from these blowhards, plus commercials, that you cant get from the blogs?
kommrade reproductive vigor
@Comrade Jake: Christ, that was a self-congratulatory wank and a half. I kept waiting for the Broke-off to say he was joking, wink at the camera, something. Instead I’m surprised he didn’t whip it out.
Laura W
@Punchy: Isn’t that the truth? They should be very afraid of that question you just asked. In the last two years alone bloggers seem to be appearing on cable news shows as "expert" guests and commentators at a rapidly increasing rate. 2009 will be John’s year, dontcha think?
I love Jason Linkins on HuffPo on Sundays. I often just scan it since it is way more info and anaylsis than I want on people I care nothing about…but a fun read. I’d like to have adult beverages with him. I’m sure he’s one of those who is as funny in person as in writing.
Comrade Stuck
Gregory is capable of being a responsible journalist. Early on in the Bush disaster, he was often the toughest questioners for the daily white house presser. Obviously he sold out at some point and once you do that it’s hard sell yourself back in. I don’t watch the Sunday Morning shows that often anymore, except FNS, just to keep tabs on the enemy.
Laura W
@kommrade reproductive vigor: Best Laugh O’ the Day so far. Thanks. Overdue.

I’m just happy that I’ll no longer have to watch Tom Brokaw. I’m sure he’s excited that he can get back to writing books that fellate Boomers.
David Gregory is under 40! Shocking!
HRA
I would have preferred Chuck Todd, too. I have seen him on Morning Joe filling in for Joe S. He did a good job interviewing the guests and following up on the discussion.
I did spot where David Gregory was getting practice one on one interviewing guests without the panel on 1600 in recent days or weeks. When the rumor about MTP came out, I thought hmmmm he must have been auditioning for it.
