In Touch

by John Cole|  June 4, 20089:51 am| 74 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

Interesting piece in the NY Times about the Democratic nominee, Sen. Obama, that is worth a full read, but which featured this quote:

One of the curiosities about Mr. Obama is his professed lack of interest in the writers who pore over that life, trying to deconstruct his fractured family and geography. He claims not to read profiles that pile high in his plane.

“It just encourages the narcissism that is already a congenital defect for a politician,” he says. “I find these essays more revealing about the author than about me.”

I wonder if anyone has done a rhetorical analysis of the candidate’s speeches in both parties from this election and examined the presence of themes of humility. That would be an interesting read.

At any rate, go read the whole piece, which features this picture that I just love:

Just a great picture.

*** Update ***

Speaking of rhetorical analysis, an observation from the Economist bloggers:

Presumably I’m late to the ball noticing this, but it’s just struck me how often Mr Obama falls into a rhetorical pattern of three anapests and a spondee.

Discuss.

The Real Comparison

by John Cole|  June 4, 20089:24 am| 82 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

This is the real comparison that matters:

John McCain yells “Get off my grass” for 20 minutes from the podium in a retirement community cafeteria.

Obama declares victory and outlines his vision for America.

If you have the time, watch them back to back. The McCain speech was even more painful the second time I watched it, and Ezra is right:

The content of McCain’s speech is basically what you’d expect, but the delivery is really peculiar. His voice is artificially high, he’s grinning more frequently then usual, his tone is jumping octaves to soften the end of his sentences. It’s a cuddly, almost delicate delivery, as if he were reading a storybook to really young children. It’s extremely disconcerting.

It is beyond disconcerting. It is painful. It is physically grating listening to him speak, and I can’t decide if that odd smile he seems to randomly flash reminds me more of Dick Cheney or Danny DeVito’s version of the Penguin. Either way, it is just unnerving.

The most important thing to take from this is that McCain is profoundly uncomfortable; awkward, if you will, on the attack. I read a report yesterday from Mark Halperin in which he stated things that Obama and Hillary both underestimate, and #5 for Obama was this snippet about the McCain campaign:

How much the McCain high command disdains him.

Which means that when you factor that his campaign is staffed with neocons who were waiting in the wings during the Bush year, attack dogs like the Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb and those like him, you can expect McCain’s speeches to be peppered with things he doesn’t really want to say or isn’t sure how to deliver (hence the awkward smile and weird looks throughout his speech last night). That will be a recipe for success, and combined with the inevitable volcanic eruption and his McMavericky habit of complete 180’s on every issue he claims to care about (he was against torture before he refused to vote against it, he has done another about face on spying on Americans, he was against the Bush tax cuts before e was for them, etc.), all we are really needing for McCain to devolve into complete parody is for him to spit his dentures out mid-snarl.

Then, watch the uplifting and rousing speech by Obama. I know, I know, just words. But such important words:

The other side will come here in September and offer a very different set of policies and positions, and that is a debate I look forward to. It is a debate the American people deserve. But what you don’t deserve is another election that’s governed by fear, and innuendo, and division. What you won’t hear from this campaign or this party is the kind of politics that uses religion as a wedge, and patriotism as a bludgeon—that sees our opponents not as competitors to challenge, but enemies to demonize. Because we may call ourselves Democrats and Republicans, but we are Americans first. We are always Americans first.

***

America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past. Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.

The journey will be difficult. The road will be long. I face this challenge with profound humility, and knowledge of my own limitations. But I also face it with limitless faith in the capacity of the American people. Because if we are willing to work for it, and fight for it, and believe in it, then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on earth. This was the moment—this was the time—when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves and our highest ideals. Thank you, God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.

Compare that to McCain’s awkward and smirking “a leader you can believe in” pap. That is a comparison I am eager to make, and a comparison I think we need to make daily.

*** Update ***

Sadly, No! has some fun with McCain’s “I Have a Green Screen” speech.

Delusional And Codependent

This post is in: Election 2008, I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Clinton Campaign, Democratic Stupidity

According to MSNBC, President Bush has officially congratulated Barack Obama, while Senator Clinton is still holed up in her bunker in NY issuing her list of demands. I watched Clinton’s speech again this morning, and really, delusional and surreal are the only way I can describe it. In fact, since I really can no longer (could I ever? I tried, at least) rationally discuss the Clintons campaign, I will let Dahlia Lithwick take over:

Just finished watching Hillary Clinton’s unconcession speech. I guess we should give her credit for the fact that her supporters now look sufficiently angry to set small brushfires.

***

Unfortunately, I kept thinking of that Gilligan’s Island episode in which Ginger acts out an excruciatingly long and melodramatic death scene. You keep thinking her every last gasp is really it. But then she keeps rolling around and twitching because she’s been peeking through her fingers all along and knows you’re still watching.

From now on, I am just going to ignore Hillary. She is not the candidate. She lost. The story is not about her, it is about Obama and McCain and winning in November.

Discuss possible running mates. You can start here. And, of course…

I think we should raise the goal to $30,000. You can do it.

No One Could Have Predicted

This post is in: Election 2008, I Can No Longer Rationally Discuss The Clinton Campaign, Assholes

This would happen:

Hours before the polls closed Tuesday in the final two Democratic presidential primaries, the Republican National Committee began circulating a video of Hillary Clinton questioning Barack Obama’s qualifications to be commander-in-chief, and acknowledging John McCain has this important presidential credential.

***

“And I think it is imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold. And I believe I have done that. Certainly, Senator McCain has done that. And you will have to ask Senator Obama with respect to his candidacy.”

The RNC posted the video on YouTube early Tuesday afternoon, just as Obama was on the verge of locking up the Democratic nomination and speculation heated up about Clinton being his running mate.

Tonight, South Dakota and Montana Democrats hold the final two contests of the primary season. Obama is expected to secure the support of enough delegates to claim the party’s presidential nomination as early as tonight, and but no later than the end of this week.

An RNC official tells CNN to expect to see more of Republicans highlighting Clinton’s critical comments of Obama as the campaign now turns to the general election phase.

“We will use it repeatedly,” the official said.

Thanks, Hillary!

But then again, she doesn’t care. This is all about her.

Everyone has called it for Obama, yet I am listening to Hillary deliver her acceptance speech.

It looks like we are going to have to run against McCain and Clinton for the next five months, so donate here:

To the convention. Fuck her.

*** Update #2 ***

That crowd with Obama is psyched. I am really proud he has won, and I think he is a great candidate.

*** Update #3 ***

Obama is giving mad praise to Hillary. Good thing he is the nominee and not me, because I would wave a giant foam middle finger and then moon her.

Primary Coverage

by John Cole|  June 3, 20086:40 pm| 258 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

I am watching the primary coverage for the last time for four years, and man am I relieved this is over.

Norah O’Donnell is getting more and more pregnant (and looks great), and is wearing a purple dress that has me wondering if we are going to hear “Heard It Through The GrapeVine” pumped on to the MSNBC set. Chris Matthews looks drunk, and his commentary reinforces that perception.

Right now they are talking about how much the Democrats hate each other. It is almost as if they forgot all the pledges by Republicans to vote for Hillary over McCain when he got the nod. Kill me. Kill me now.

Consider this your primary open thread.

*** Update ***

So the night Obama wins the nomination, the entire media coverage is focussed on Clinton’s brazen and successful attempt to hijack the limelight with story of her struggle and her desire to be VP. Is there really anyone who can not figure out that five months of her attempting to upstage Obama followed by perhaps 8 years of the same would be a disaster? Really? Anyone?

*** Update #2 ***

McCain’s speech is just hideous. Where is he delivering this? A retirement community?

*** Update #3 ***

I am so sick and tired of what Hillary wants and what Obama has to do to placate her. Here, Hillary, how about this- how about you walk your supporters back from the ledge, you work your ass off to elect Obama, and we re-elect you in 2012 to another term in Nita Lowey’s Senate seat where you can hang out for four more years with your BFF John McCain, whose ass we are going to kick in November, before your 2016 run for President? And if you kick Penn in the nuts, good on you.
