Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Republicans in disarray!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

That clip of Frank was the one I was talking about last night. I thought the question was somewhat loaded but also that Frank responded well even if he was too testy. Then again, I’d be testy too if I was being unfairly blamed so many times. And notice of course that unless part of the clip cut him off, he never responded to Frank’s question of what he should have done. I wonder if he can.

@Zifnab: I think I’m starting to like Barney Frank. Yeah, he’s in the industry’s pocket, but dammit, he’s the only Dem I’ve seen so far who is willing to fight Republicans using their language and their methods. He dishes it out, and sure enough, they can’t take it.

So far, only he and Hillary Clinton have displayed the courage to name that which cannot be named – "a vast right-wing conspiracy".

Back in the day I thought Hillary was being both a little paranoid and disingenous. Boy, was I wrong. Sorry, Ms. Clinton.

My long distance provider, CREDO (previously Working Assets) has a fantastic round-up option on my monthly bill, as well as this program I was unaware of. (They also have amazing customer service with warm and helpful people answering the phone.)

CREDO raises money for nonprofit groups like Planned Parenthood through automatic donations. Each time a CREDO customer makes a call or a purchase with the Working Assets Credit Card, a portion of the charges automatically goes into the CREDO donations pool. These contributions come at no extra cost to the customer. The groups that receive funding are nominated by CREDO customers, who also vote on how the donations are distributed.

I love the voting at year’s end — I get to allocate the percentages of all contributions to a wide array of nonprofits. I just got the break out of all donations from CREDO to these groups in my bill and thought it share-worthy. Total donations for 2008 were $3,345,331. Talk about making a huge difference through literally pennies.

Edit: Interesting that Planned Parenthood and Doctors Without Borders were the only two groups to exceed $100,000. Very cool.

Well, as long as this is an open thread, can I get something off my chest? Is Kant the worst moral philosopher in the world? He says don’t look at the consequences of your actions.

My understanding of him is that if something is wrong in the general, it is always wrong. So, If I lie about the location of Anne Frank’s family to the Nazis I am wrong for lying, because we could not have a society based on lying.

It might better if society were always just, but we all know that is bullshit. My question is: Is Kantian Ethics defensible?

Just like a congresspimp who supported every bill that created this mess will not be held accountable for it, we can assume the treehuggers will not be held accountable for the crappact flourescent dimbulb fiasco.

Every CFL light contains a small ac-dc power supply with reactive components in it that will affect the CFL’s power factor (PF) – that is, the load presented to the ac line. The closer the PF is to 1, the better. A load with low power factor draws more current and is less efficient than a load with a high power factor for the same amount of useful power. The higher currents required by the lower PF devices mean increased energy lost in the grid due to such things as I2R losses. These power losses don’t show up directly on our electricity bill, but the utilities sure see the effects.

I put one of my home CFL bulbs on my Kill-O-Watt power meter recently and measured its power factor: It was .57. This is lousy. Although each CFL is only 13W, there are millions of them out there.

I mean, unlike Luttrell, I don’t own a gun, I don’t have PTSD, and I’m pretty prone to letting people take advantage of me. But if somebody killed my cat like they killed his dog, I’d be pretty ready to put a bullet in a motherfucker.

Andrew Sullivan’s harsh treatment of Sarah Palin is entirely justified because Palin was far and away the DUMBEST candidate to ever run for President or Vice President from either major party.

The #1 reason McCain chose Palin as his running mate was her SEX APPEAL.

It was obvious from watching how Republican males at the GOP convention reacted to Palin. They were all dying to get into her panties.

Who can seriously doubt that National Review editor Rich Lowry was masturbating when he wrote the following comments after watching Palin debate Biden

"I’m sure I’m not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can’t be learned; it’s either something you have or you don’t, and man, she’s got it."
