Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Not all heroes wear capes.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

How stupid are these people?

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

I may or may not have had a bunch of cocktails.

I do, however, miss my dog. I bet I have called my folks 20 times in the last 36 hours to check on her.

This thread is for 80’s music. Or else.

Went to Mt Rainier today, hiked up to a glacier, stripped off nekkid and jumped in the river of runoff. I did not need to stay in it long to report my findings: melting glaciers are pretty fucking cold.

On the way home I passed the Muckleshoot amphitheatre thingie where Def Leppard were playing and had no trouble with the horrible backed up traffic because I was going the opposite way.

Meh, I’ll risk the “or else”. Lord knows it’s been long enough since I’ve been in a sin bin. I’m on for five more days after being on two (abrupt schedule change) but the crankiness over the change hasn’t sank in yet. That and my Marine’s been out of touch for two weeks now. Plus I’m still at work and can’t really Google around for the really good stuff anyway. Maybe I’ll make up for that when I get home (find some Roxette stuff of something). Okay, bitchfest done.

Replacements were the middle band and Husker Du headlined that saturday night. The band that I was in at the time headlined on wednesday night. The tapes sat around forever until about two years ago they were edited for a movie called 7 Nights In The Entry. I was going to go to the one and only showing of the movie but I got home from work that evening to find that someone had kicked in the back door and burglarized my house. The asshole who owns the rights to the stuff (Paul Stark) has said that he won’t put it out as a DVD.

    @asiangrrlMN:

Darkness is one of my favorite Police songs. I think it’s one of their most underrated, underappreciated, and overlooked songs. I’d love to find a live version of that song, but something tells me the Police probably never performed it in concert because it would be too obscure for most concertgoers.

The Aquarium by Saint Saens is one of the most moving, etheral pieces of classical music I’ve ever read. It’s played during the opening credits of Days of Heaven starring Richard Gere and it’s also played in the opening and closing credits of Visions of Light, an incredible documentary on the history of cinematography.

Rosalita is a great song. I guess you’re not a fan of Incident on 57th Street which leads into Rosalita since you didn’t mention it. I think those songs back to back make an incredible segue.

It sounds like nothing I’ve found thus far has hit a home run like Father and Son, but I guess singles, doubles, and triples aren’t the worst thing.

Late to the thread, as usual. “Promises, Promises” is a great song. Good guitar, good beat. What more can you ask?

After the marathon ’80s throwdown of the other night, I am more convinced than ever that there was a lot of great music in the ’80s, but it was sort of “distributed”–lots of songs from one- or two-hit wonders, rather than monolithic bodies of work from a small core of supergroups. (There some of those, of course.)

Will start reading the thread now. Here’s my bookend to “Promises, Promises”–the Motels, “Only the Lonely Can Play.”

Man, oh man, this thread is giving me so many flashbacks, it’s not even funny. The sad thing is that I’ve forgotten much of what I learned in school during the 1980’s, yet I remember the lyrics to almost every damn song mentioned here.

My first response is lingering in moderation hell for some weird reason.
I grew up listening to everything from Hank Williams Sr. to Kenny Rogers. I love the old Marty Robbins stuff, Glen Campbell, Charlie Pride. The outlaw country is OK, I love Willie and Kris, but just not that big a fan of Waylon or Johnny Cash ( I know, sacrilege). I love the Dixie Chicks and Garth. The newer stuff I like is Dierks Bentley, Gary Allen, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Nickle Creek (blue grass).
I don’t like being preached at in my country music however, which makes listening to country on the radio almost impossible these days.

Is it possible that when John leaves it for the weekend like this, the blog could get so bloated with comments that it starts expanding, bursting the hard drive and finally glorping over the sides of the computer onto the floor into a green sludge that takes on a life of its own, adriven by a DNA of snark and arguments and links to god knows what that finally overcomes the pets and walls and furniture, so when he returns its like those directors-cut-only scenes from “Alien” where Captain Dallas and the others are sort of glued to the wall half-covered in some sort of slime that’s living off their vital organs as they murmer “Kill me…. please”?

    Obscure but classic 80s songs:

    “Germany Calling” by Tone Band

“Walking In the Air” by Aled Jones

“Down In the Park” live by Gary Numan from the film “Urgh! A Music War” (1981)

“Pacific State” by 808 State from 1988

“Algebra Of Darkness” by Harold Budd from 1988. YouTube doesn’t have it, alas.

“Glass Candle Grenades” by the Cocteau Twins

    “Atomic” by Blondie

“Walking Away” by Information Society live from 1989

    “Sunset Grill” by Don Henley.

“He’s a Liquid” by John Foxx.
Actually done in 1979. The 80s started a year or two before 1980 and lasted a couple of years beyond 1990.

    Um, interesting.

You know rock songs don’t have to make sense, right?

And bonus points if the video makers have never listened to the song.

“Heart of the Matter” is good. Henley’s slightly preening intro is exactly what puts me off about him.

@Steeplejack: I love that song by Don Henley. And, this one:

    Last Worthless Evening

As for the Sushi Girl song/video, yeah, I know. Still. Bee-zarre.

And, since I posted a Dennis DeYoung song yesterday, I have to even it out with a Tommy Shaw song today:

    Girls With Guns

It’s strangely apropos for yesterday’s shouty white people fest.

(I am very irritated. A month ago Bonnie doing Burning Down the House from this same Road Tested Live CD/Concert popped up on youtube finally. Now it is gone. Sigh.)
I have to go have a real life now.

@Steeplejack: Also, Valley Road is my favorite Hornsby ever but youtube never has a good version. Months ago there was a really freaky church service scene set to it I never understood, but even that is gone.

I challenge you to procure a good clip of Valley Road. Take your time.

“Last Worthless Evening” is good. Damn, I might have to reconsider that one Henley album that has all those songs on it.

“Girls with Guns”–I kept waiting for the big chorus with that phrase, but apparently I missed it. Good song, though.

@Steeplejack: I love Last Worthless Evening but way too overlaid with sad memories at this point.
You just got lucky…I was gonna link the demo tape of Stevie Nicks and Don H doing “Leather and Lace” but it wouldn’t load. I like it. You’d hate it, no doubt.

I’m sure you’ll probably not be overly fond of this one, but I played the shit out of this album in college:

    Buckingham Nicks: Frozen Love

This one you might be OK with. Heard the original the other day but couldn’t find a good clip. This one is decent: Fleetwood Mac Hypnotized:

A little Stevie goes a long way for me. Although “Gypsy” always hits me hard in the gut, because that was the song that I remember playing on the radio when I went to have one of my cats put down. Oof.

I heard/saw a clip of her doing “Leather and Lace” with someone just in the last few days. I don’t think it was Henley. It couldn’t have been Tom Petty. Could it?

Now, “Hypnotized” is possibly my all-time favorite Fleetwood Mac song. I’ve got it on several of my mix CDs.

Oddly enough, it fits perfectly with this little gem:
    Pieces of a Dream, “Fo-Fi-Fo.”

    @asiangrrlMN:

OCDCDO is a terrible thing, isn’t it?

Well, I’m off to the grocery store to buy one lousy potato.

I’m having my long-delayed steak and potato dinner tonight, and I made the mistake of inviting my cranky older neighbor, whose wife is away visiting relatives for a week or two. I mainly just wanted to check to make sure he’s still alive, but I got carried away in the conversation. I didn’t think he’d take me up on the invitation, but damned if he didn’t.

I have a two-pack of rib-eye steaks but only one potato, which is infuriatingly just that much too small to stretch for two people. Damn. So I will have to think of something good to buy at the store that will partially redeem the trip. I hate going out at all on Sunday, which is the first day of my weekend and which follows (usually) a particularly grueling evening shift at the part-time gig (and late-night blog-wallowing here, of course).

Damn, damn, damn. Maybe I’ll get a bottle of champagne.

That playlist I made up last night has been playing very well for me on my iPod.

“If I Can’t Change Your Mind” is a perfect description of what I am feeling right now:

    Tears fill up my eyes
    I’m washed away with sorrow
    And somewhere in my mind
    I know there’s no tomorrow
    I see you’re leaving soon
I guess you’ve had your fill
But if I can’t change your mind
    Then no one will

    And all throughout the years
I’ve never strayed from you my dear
But you suspect I’m somewhere else
    You’re feeling sorry for yourself
    Leaving with a broken heart
    I love you even still
But if I can’t change your mind
    Then no one will

Even though my heart keeps breaking
Don’t you know that I’ll be waiting
    Here for you
    Then when you return
    When will you return
I hope you see I’m dedicated
Look how long that I have waited
If you come back then you will find
    A different person
    If you change your mind

    How can I explain away
    Something that I haven’t done
And if you can’t trust me now
    You’ll never trust in anyone
With all the crazy doubts you’ve got
    I love you even still
But if I can’t change your mind
    Then no one will

Someday you’ll see I’ve been true
    I’ll stay that way until
But if I can’t change your mind
    Then no one will
