Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

White supremacy is terrorism.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

No one could have predicted…

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

This fight is for everything.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Dang it! We were supposed to visit my aunt and uncle in Beckley, but she called Thursday night and told us about the forecast, so we decided to stay home. We live in SW Ohio and we got a stunning one and a half inches of snow Friday night. But they were expecting fourteen inches overnight there and an additional 3-5 today. Is that still holding up, John?

My folks left early Friday to get there and they made it before the snow started, but by three o’clock the snow was rolling in. I wonder if they’ll be able to leave Sunday…

    How does Lily like it?

Calling for 12 to 20 here. And it’s really coming down now.

The retailers must be freaking out – the last weekend before Christmas and the east coast is going to be completely snowed in. The War on Christmas continues unabated! Apparently even the Baby Jeezus doesn’t want us to shop.

I had an awful dream that it turned to rain. If (like me) your mental age is 12, you won’t be surprised that I scrambled out of bed and you can imagine my relief when I looked out the window. Still can’t find the fucking snow shoes though.

This is awesome. Fuck shopping, go sledding.

and a whiny kid that will get picked on.

Someone tell Joe “Stage Slut” Lieberman that a camera crew is on the Mall interviewing people about health care. When he comes scurrying out you’ll have your whiny kid.

So it looks like about 6 inches so far, but it is coming down in those little itty flakes that just never stop, so I would not be surprised if we get ten inches or so.

Lily loved it, ran all over the place, and then, after about 5 minutes, decided her feet were cold and ran to the door and waited for me to let her in.

Betsy the cocker spaniel and I just came in from a long walk in the hills. The problem for me is not getting up the hill, but getting down. She’s 12, but acts like 2 when the snow gets above her toes. I had a heck of a time keeping pace with her. Lots of snow still coming down.

It’s impossible to know what’s already been scanned. This sort of broke in late October of this year, depending on what blogs or feeds you read. (There was also a boomlet in mid-November.) I discovered it today.

But I thought in light of this week’s contentiousness, it would lighten up the mood.

Miss Moxie has been hyper since I put up the tree. She’s about ten years old and has been behaving like a pup. As I wrap a package she gives it a sniff and walks away. The other day I went to my closet and had purchased a sweater for my son and a stuffed animal for her. Both were in a shopping bag. The bag with the sweater was on the floor and the stuffed animal was missing. She found it and hid it in the guest bedroom..

The big “take your leashed dog shopping” store has a brand of shoes for dogs called Mut-Lucks, that work very well. They close with velcro & the bottoms have something on them for traction.

My German shepherd got a nail fungus that went on for 4 months. Her feet (all 4) were in bandages due to the nail loss & we had to use them. She eventually learned to take them off, but tape cures that. They are very sturdy & will keep ice & snow from Lily’s delicate feet.

A relative is supposed to fly to MN from NYCity this afternoon. I hope his flight is still on schedule.
Searching for a dog toy. Years ago we bought 2 basketballs on a tug rope for our large dogs & now we can’t find this toy. It’s a full size basketball with nylon band surrounding it & a rope at each end. I have found the Kaiser Action Ball offical size basketball w/tug rope online on uk or au sites but so far no dog toy sites here that carry this anymore. This has been a toy that has held up for at least 10 years outdoors through MN winters & vigorous dog play. The basketballs are still fine but the ropes & nylon band surrounding them are finally wearing out.

One wonders what happens when Nelson says he’ll support the reconciliation, and Holy Joe says he objects to not allowing insurance companies being allowed to sel insurance across state lines.. (Which he didn’t two weeks ago.) And then Nelson says there are problems with not giving enough money to insurance companies, so we gotta pay extra.

And the White House will says that’s too bad, but you know, no big thing, here, let’s cut out all the states, and allow insurance companies to sell insurance across states lines. And throw in increasing the Medicare age and reducing the subsidies and allow recissions.

Eventually it’ll be the Republican bill they proposed back in September, except that they’ll add a provision allowing all little kids to get free care for their hamsters. And everybody will vote for it anyways, since it doesn’t cost anything.

Anyways, exactly 11 1/2 inches of snow and still snowing. The fun part was find the shovel and the rake, which were in the back, under the snow.

They can now, through the FEHBP. Considering the exchanges are based on the FEHBP, I’d figure they probably will be able to in the exchanges.

Not that it’s an issue, since even with the skullfucking Lieberman’s given it, the new federal regulations (particularly on insurance plans on the exchange) will be stronger than existing state regulations. Minnesota had some strong regulations on the money insurers spent on care, but Franken’s put in an amendment to bring the national plan up to the same level. Selling across state lines won’t change the game much.

In certain ways it will help, because it means the exchange will work from a single risk pool rather than a whole heap of small ones. But don’t tell Lieberman that.

Require me to give not only two personal references but also give my neighbors’ contact info(I don’t deal with my neighbors because they all go to the local GOP/Fundie megachurch and they won’t talk to us. This year they put up their Nativity scenes BEFORE freaking Halloween with all kinds of Bible verses about Satan plastered everywhere. @A Mom Anon: There are several rescue operations. Most dogs are already spayed and there shots are up to date. Last time I checked at the rescue that was set up out side of Pet’s Mart, the fee was $350. Not sure why though. Most places you pay just the fees incurred and some over head. I’ve always had full bred dogs and I have to admit the mutt sitting next to me is pretty special. You definitely want a rescue that has been seen by a vet to insure good health.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is expected to file for cloture on health care reform this afternoon.

That vote might be interesting to watch since Joe is in CT with his family and isn’t Byrd still ill.

There’s a really big snowstorm coming to D.C.tonight. It would be unsafe to ask all the staffers and Hill employees who’d be needed at the Capitol if Congress stays open all hours this weekend, as Harry Reid intends, to drive to and from work–especially since many will have to do so at night, and they won’t be well-rested. So from the point of view of public safety and personal well-being, Ben Nelson can do everyone a favor, announce today he won’t vote for cloture, and let everyone stay home this weekend.

Hmm. Well, if Bill Kristol is always wrong, does this mean that any Senator who stays away from the Capital is doomed to be hit by an asteroid or choke to death on a latke?

She goes to the homes of the adopters to evaluate if the home and residents are up to having a pet inside and outside. I’m in the DC northern suburbs, and it’s snowing at 2″ an hour. I chanced a heart attack* shoveling what has fallen since it started before midnight (it’s noon as I write this), and as I finished the single-width track across the front of the house, I looked back to see a good half-inch covering where I started. We’re planning on hitting it about once an hour, to keep up.

The TV weather reporters are using skis while doing on-the-spot reporting, and the cameras have melted snow drops running down the lenses. And the wind is starting to pick up.

We’re staying in this evening (duh!), and plan to decorate the tree and start the annual Christmas cookie production line. We had planned on going to (and helping run) a Nowell Sing We Clear concert this afternoon, but that’s off (thank God!), so it’s a low-key weekend for us.

As I understand it, the Senate is in session? I guess I could hit C-Span to see what’s happening, but…

And my feet are cold, despite my Timberland boots.

The extended forecast is that whatever snow comes down will stay around for a while, because the temps will remain cold. The powers that be usually do a great job of snowplowing and clearing streets, and there are an amazing number of private pickups with snowplow attachments that always seem to appear out of nowhere to plow side streets and even parking lots. But, yeah, things will be well disrupted for a while, and I don’t think they’ll be back to normal by Monday. Good luck with your plans.
