Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

The words do not have to be perfect.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Consistently wrong since 2002

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Lucky Seven

So it took a while (most likely due to operator error), and I was up until about 4 am working on things, but I have Windows Seven up and running and I have to say it is really sweet. I don’t know what the lingo is, but I really like the tray at the bottom with your applications.

And btw- don’t forget about Bitsy! We are so very close.

I have a long-running argument with a friend about Slate. He thinks it is ok — I think it sucks. I just got this email admitting defeat from him.

OK, you’re right.  It’s shit and nothing but.

An American Nightmare

Via The Mudflats, the blog that did so much to bring attention to Sarah Palin’s less-than-starburstacular career before William ‘Wrong Again’ Kristol cruised Juneau:

To anticipate your next question, no this is not a joke, or some fabulous Photoshop creation by the Mudflats Art Department (flyinureye). It is in fact the real cover and the real title of a real book that will be in bookstores on November 17, also too.

“Going Rouge is compiled by Richard Kim and Betsy Reed, two top editors of the left-leaning weekly The Nation, and includes essays by Nation regulars like Katrina vanden Heuvel, Naomi Klein, and Katha Pollitt. It’s the first release from OR Books, a fledgling outfit founded earlier this year by publishing veterans John Oakes and Colin Robinson that “embraces progressive change in politics, culture and the way we do business,” according to its website.”

But wait, there’s more! In addition to those listed above, Mudflatters will be able to enjoy essays by Max Blumenthal, Shannyn Moore, and yes,…. yours truly! I was quite honored to be asked to write a piece for the book.

It is a deep, deep disappointment to me that Amazon not only has failed to make this thrilling tome available for pre-order, but when I typed GOING ROUGE into the search bar, they suggested I “meant” that other book, the unintentional parody. I may be dyslexic, Amazon, but I’m not a godsdamned idiot!

EDIT: Meant to credit Valdivia for bringing this to my attention.

And unfortunately WordPress (FYWP) won’t let me ‘fix’ the link:

Not for the Weak Stomached

by John Cole|  October 22, 200910:40 pm| 105 Comments

This post is in: The War on Your Neighbor, aka the War on Drugs

Good grief:

According to a split decision by the Minnesota Supreme Court, a person in possession of more than 25 grams of bong water that contains a controlled substance can be prosecuted for a first-degree drug crime.

While most people wouldn’t consider bong water to be a legitimate drug, a narcotics officer testified that users will sometimes save the bong water and drink it later. We just puked a little.

***

Here’s an idea: If you find bong water that tests positive for drugs, chances are you’ll find some drugs hanging out somewhere close by. Are we getting that desperate in these drug wars to suspect that a normal person would actually drink bong water to get high? At that point we should almost have sympathy for drug addicts.

Actually, the point from the state’s perspective is to probably harass people when they can’t find drugs. No actual pot lying around- guess what, we just made up a new drug! JACKPOT! Plus, who knows what property they will get to seize and use for their own purposes, and in the paperwork at the end of the year, it won’t have an asterisk next to the list of convictions that says “Sure, it was a first-degree drug crime conviction, but it was f-ing bong water.”

This is the stupidest country in the world. Bring on President Palin. We deserve her.

The OS “Upgrade” Continues

by John Cole|  October 22, 20098:42 pm| 106 Comments

This post is in: Science & Technology

So I went and bought a WD terabyte external HD, something I should have done years ago anyway with all the important stuff I have on this computer, and am now backing up all my porn my important work files. Once that is done, I now have a clean copy of Windows 7, not an upgrade, and I will start over.

The joy of this is hard to describe.

And Tunch ate his day’s allotment of food by 4:30 pm and has been standing behind me shrieking since then.

Because there’s a lot of frustration going around recently. Make stew, not sausage! Take it away, Bad Horse’s Filly:

In honor of the fall colors, it’s time to break out the slowcooker and make a traditional menu. How nice is it to come home from a day’s work or outdoor chores like raking leaves and have a hearty beef stew waiting for you? Add some biscuits and baked apples and you have the perfect fall dinner. On the board tonight:

1)Beef Stew
2)Wheat Biscuits
3)Baked Apples
