Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

And it turns out that the comments from Howard Dean that I labeled unadulterated idocy and that completely got my knickers in a full twist– he never made them:

Several outlets, including the Huffington Post, reported Dean’s comments in the context that he had soured on the president because of the concessions made on health care. The former DNC chair reached out to the Huffington Post to correct the record.

“I said I was going to vote for him and that I support him vigorously,” Dean said. “It wasn’t your fault, Joe heard me wrong. When I looked back and looked at it I can see what happened. But I said I was going to support him and I am.”

The footage from the show does clearly show Dean uttering the word “not” before “vigorously.” But there is enough of a pause in there to suggest that he had been trying to start a different train of thought before changing course. And Dean’s reaction to Scarborough’s confetti line suggests he wasn’t entirely sure what the laughter was all about.

So my apologies, Gov. Dean. You didn’t say anything stupid.

But for all of you who pooh-poohed me when I thought it was disastrous politics and really bad form for the former chair of the DNC to be trashing his own President, you know who obviously agrees with me? Howard Dean, who reached out to correct the record because it would have been terrible to have that out there.

I’m watching people on twitter who have spent the last day screaming “KILL THIS BILL” now noting that if the bill fails, it will have been a colossal “blunder” on Obama’s part.

Not it won’t, you halfwits. It will have been sabotage, first by Lieberman and Nelson, then by the progressive wing.

And Kthug supports the bill. Must be his authoritarian streak, his Republican roots, his being an Obot, and his putting party over principle.

MATTHEWS: Would you have stopped it? If you had been president at this time, would you have done what President Obama has done and stopped the water-boarding? Because that‘s another thing that people symbolically see as American, well, repression or tyranny or imperialism, whatever the hell they‘re calling it. Would you have stopped the water-boarding?

SCHOCK: I would not—I would not limit our intelligence agencies‘ ability to get information from people. If they have a ticking time bomb or—or some—a critical piece of information that can save American lives, I don‘t believe we should—we should limit water-boarding or, quite frankly, any other alternative torture technique if it means saving Americans‘ lives.

But I don‘t think it should be standard practice.

They usually aren’t that blunt, but I just love that he thinks torture should be reserved for special occasions, like a really expensive cocktail dress or a nice cashmere sweater. And he really can’t walk this back, because even if they try the “waterboarding is not torture” nonsense, he went beyond waterboarding and advocated other forms of torture.

Look, part of the reason I get so pissed off at folks like Howard Dean when I think they are doing self-defeating things is because of how crazy the Republicans are. I disagree with Dean about the bill, and I recognize I may very well be wrong and he probably is right about that. But what I refuse to back down from is the idea that is somehow good politics for the former head of the DNC to be trashing a Democratic President on a right-wing television show. It is bad politics, it is bad optics, and it is a sign of an uneven temperament and bad judgment. And we can all agree that it is well established that I know a thing or two about being a hothead and having bad judgment.

Back to the crazy Republicans. I listened to Rush while running some errands, and it was just insane. I felt dizzy after fifteen minutes. He started off on a rant about Reuters publishing a CDC report about 60 million Americans not having insurance at some point this year, and what followed was amazing. First, he said it was suspicious that Reuters was publishing it now, implying there was a media conspiracy to push health care. After the media conspiracy was floated, he then moved on to the fact that these were just estimates. “Estimates!” he sneered, and then launched a broadside about how government and scientists and academia have perverted statistics to pursue a left-wing agenda. After a couple minutes of that, he launched into the CDC again, claiming we couldn’t trust them because they “couldn’t even predict how many people would get swine flu” and “they didn’t even know how to make the vaccine strong enough,” which, of course, was not the CDC’s fault that the company that made a run of the children’s vaccine not up to standard. After that, he then claimed that Obama ordered this report released to pass his bill, and even though he does not like everything in the bill, he will sign it anyway because he knows it is the first step to telling you what to eat and how to live your life. “It’s about control,” Rush said. He then turned back to the CDC report that he had just told us you could not trust, and used those numbers to ask “How many people don’t have insurance because of Obama’s and Pelosi’s policies.” And it went on and on in the same breathless tone.

So I don’t care if Howard Dean trashes the health care bill. But when he starts launching generic broadsides on his President like he did on MSNBC this morning, all I see is some jackass making it more likely folks like Rush will be near the levers of power once again. That terrifies me, and I think some of you forget how many wingnut blogs I expose myself to on a daily basis. These folks are crazy. And I will continue to tell you that when Dean says stupid shit like that, it is unadulterated idiocy and time for someone to have his didy changed, be given a new sippy cup, and to have a little time out.

Period.
