Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Second rate reporter says what?

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

We are learning that “working class” means “white” for way too many people.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Books are my comfort food!

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Unadulterated Idiocy

by John Cole|  December 17, 200912:18 pm| 291 Comments

This post is in: Assholes, Democratic Stupidity, Manic Progressive

I know you are not allowed to speak ill of Howard Dean, but things like this should remind you that even really smart people can be idiots:

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Thursday, Howard Dean said he would vote for President Obama in 2012 but he would not “vigorously” support his reelection. “I’m going to support President Obama when he runs for re-election,” Dean, a former presidential candidate himself, said. “Not vigorously. I’m going to vote for him.” Host Joe Scarborough laughed.

I swear it feels like a certain portion of the progressive movement is really hoping for a bloodbath in 2010 to teach those damned Senators a lesson. That’ll teach ’em! I’ve always thought we needed a liberal Club for Growth mentality to help elect Republicans.

In the meantime, could someone keep Howard Dean and his big mouth away from cameras until he pulls his shit back together? The former head of the DNC on right wing shows knee-capping his own party. Idiot.

All or Nothing At All

Sen. Klobuchar just made a great point on MSNBC- using the logic of those wanting to kill the bill because it isn’t good enough, we would never have passed the Civil Rights Act of 1960 because it didn’t have the reforms of 1964, 68, and 91 included.

All Your Drones Are Belong To Us

This is probably causing heads to roll somewhere:

Militants in Iraq have used $26 off-the-shelf software to intercept live video feeds from U.S. Predator drones, potentially providing them with information they need to evade or monitor U.S. military operations.

Senior defense and intelligence officials said Iranian-backed insurgents intercepted the video feeds by taking advantage of an unprotected communications link in some of the remotely flown planes’ systems. Shiite fighters in Iraq used software programs such as SkyGrabber — available for as little as $25.95 on the Internet — to regularly capture drone video feeds, according to a person familiar with reports on the matter.

For whatever reason, as soon as I read this I thought of the scene near the end of Wargames where Barry Corbin says “I’d piss on the spark plug if I thought it would do any good.”

You have to loved the fact that the entire “Climategate” argument from our right-wing bloggers is based completely on a British wingnut blogger citing Russian sources. Go check out memeorandum- it is like a Wingnut Who’s Who. Even Pam Atlas shows up.

And on the other side, you have thousands of scientists.

Ehh. We humans had a good run.

I Don’t Get This

Sad:

The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office announced this afternoon that the search for two climbers that have been missing on Oregon’s 11,249-foot Mt. Hood since Friday has been suspended and is now being handled as a recovery effort.

“One of the most difficult decisions I have to make as Sheriff is the decision to suspend search operations. I have consulted with all of the search-and-rescue experts at my disposal, along with the family members of Katie Nolan and Anthony Vietta, and have made the decision to suspect search operations at this time,” Sheriff Craig Roberts said in a news release.

Of all the thrill seeking adventure activities, this is the one I understand the least. I seriously don’t get it. I can understand the adrenaline rush of surfing monster waves or base jumping or skydiving or many other of the wide array of insanely stupid but allegedly exciting things thrill seekers do.

But putting on a bunch of cold weather gear and walking up a damned mountain at 1 mph so you can then… walk back down at a slower pace? You lost me there.

We have always been at war with the Republicans

This post is in: General Stupidity, Good News For Conservatives, Manic Progressive

John seems to be burned out from all craziness, so I’m going to continue with my rant against those who say that if Democrats were Republicans they would have rammed their health care bill through, the same way that legendary Senate leader Bill Frist rammed immigration reform, Social Security privatization, and drilling in ANWR through.

The reason I don’t like the myth of the omnipotent Republican majority is that it reminds me an awful lot of the myth of super-terrorist. Let’s face it: these unstoppable Republican political leaders of yore are cut from the same cloth as the America-hating geniuses who will bust out of that prison in Illinois and roam the country detonating suitcase nukes. And that cloth is paranoia about “the enemy”.

Did Bush ram his war resolution through the Senate? Sure, but our whole system is set up to make war seem appealing. We have “news” networks that get better ratings during wars, foreign policy think tanks that are funded by defense contractors, just war “philosophies” that (I recently learned) even liberal bloggers are not allowed to mock. And tax cuts have a similar array of wealthy interests, hacks for hire, and pseudointellectual whack-a-doodle behind them.

Health care reform has a similar array of forces opposing it. Even the great Bill Frist would have trouble getting something reasonable through, trust me.

None of this is to say that the health care bill we get won’t suck or that a better a health care bill wouldn’t be smart politics. In fairness to the Hamsheristas, they were right about Joe Lieberman, right about how things would go down in the Senate, right that a bill with a public option would be better, both politically and in terms of reforming the system.

But all this DEMS ARE TEH SHITTIEST PARTY EVAH stuff is crap. And to the extent that Democrats are a shitty party, it’s because they share Republicans’ fealty to corporate interests, not because they lack Republicans’ super-human ability to pass legislation.
