If you are seeing this, it is because I am still out to dinner and this pre-scheduled thread came up.
I am sure this will fuel rumors that Tunch is actually running the website. That, of course, is absurd, because everyone knows Tunch hates WordPress.
And since I am Tunch is writing this ahead of the time and have no idea what the score is, let me restate how much I hate Dallas.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
I share teh Cowboy hatred, but can’t exactly get behind Michael Vick, either. Bah.
General Winfield Stuck
So now your phoning it in. That’s cool, fully automated bloggers will work just fine. The human ones are just an annoyance anyways. Ain’t that right Tunch?
Jim
I bet Lily hates Philly.
Me, I’m in a quandary. I don’t like either team.
MikeJ
Why do I picture Tunch sitting in a high backed leather chair, petting John Cole?
Keith G
Nah, if Tunch was posting at least we might get a Tunch cam shot.
Yutsano
@Jim: Which do you hate more? (Keep in mind there is only one right answer to this question.) Whichever one that is, root for the opposite.

I have a question here: Is it worth it to subscribe to Mother Jones? I just got an offer from them, see, and I’m sort of thinking about it. The only magazine I’m currently subscribed to is National Geographic (I get it for the pictures). Anyone have any thoughts?

So some people are already saying that Coakley deserves to lose in Mass., because then, obviously, that will get us a public option, or even better. I really don’t know how their minds work.

I hate the Cowboys, and you should too. But since all right thinking people should root for the ‘Aints, my spouse is reading and I’m surfing the web rather than watching the game.
Thadeus Horne
There’s still football? Why? The Broncos are gone, so what’s the deal?
I’m sorry..I lost my head momentarily. I’ll just go fuck off now.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
@Thadeus Horne:
Well, that’s if you call the second half of the Broncos’ season “football.” (Yeah, I’m bitter.)
Tunch
@General Winfield Stuck: Yes, they are.

I don’t know what all of you are doing, but I just received from Netflix, The #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. I am in total love. If you haven’t seen it, I have to highly recommend it based on the pilot, which all I’ve watched so far. The woman who plays Precious is mesmerizing.

@Bad Horse’s Filly: I watched it over the summer when it was on HBO. @John Cole was watching it too, if I remember correctly.
I love Jill Scott (Precious), her acting is great, but her singing is amazing.

Did you see that Andrew actually admitted to being an idiot over calling for Napolitano’s head? He writes thusly:
My first impulse – that Napolitano should take the fall – was one expression of this, reflecting the British notion that the minister involved should resign whether or not he or she was directly responsible for the debacle…
That was my first impulse. But I understand this is culturally British – and even a relic as British politics have become less principled since. So my “off with her head!” initial response was ill-advised, even dumb in retrospect.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
Can anyone describe this tag-team QB thang the Eagles have going? Seems to run counter to everything I thought I knew about the position.

@arguingwithsignposts: I could just dive into Smudge’s eyes and drown of happiness. Whut. A. Luv.

Hey Tunch. How about giving us the Admin password in case you want to, you know, take a nap or something. It will never go beyond this immediate blog. I promise.

Gotta cheer for the cross state team, much as I cannot feel good about cheering for a team with Vick on it. But as a Steeler fan, the Cowboys must always DIAF. Meanwhile, I am finally getting over the hangover from my embarrassing drunken bacchanalia last night with my John which ended with us drinking cheap shots in the local VFW while playing Motown on the jukebox and singing along. Loudly.
NobodySpecial
Tonight, I’m definitely rooting for the asteroid.
arguingwithsignposts
Well, unless the tides turn drastically in the second half, it looks like y’all will have another week to hate the Cowboys.
RedKitten
Your Saturday night moment of cheer….
Yutsano
@geg6: You are a prime target for a good karaoke night. I wouldn’t recommend taking me though. I went barhopping with a friend in Corvallis (you’d think during the OSU school year would be the time to go, but it turned out to be much more fun in the summer) and we went to a place with karaoke. My turn came up and I had a ballad queued up. I actually heard folks groan when it started then the part where I came in came up. According to a friend of mine jaws dropped all over the bar. They expected a massive crash and burn, they got a tender version of the song. I even had folks slow dancing to it. So uhh yeah I kinda wreck the whole point. Or not.

Does anybody need a new dishonest NY Times reporter to dislike? Jennifer Steinhauer, the California correspondent, really irks me. She is the master of equivocation – instead of noting that California wingnuts refuse to play ball in the legislature, she falls on the tired old fallacy of “low legislative approval”:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/us/10calif.html?hp=&pagewanted=all
“California voters are distinctly unimpressed with the roles played in the crisis by the governor and legislators. Many lawmakers cater to the fringe elements of their respective political parties and are beholden to special interests that finance their campaigns. A paltry 13 percent of registered voters approve of the job the Legislature does”
I disapprove of the job the legislature does, too. But that’s because republican nutbags and governor jerkoff have a veto over any form of adult decision in the state.
Steinhauer, of course, never mentions Prop. 13 when she writes anything, as though the Democrats just need half the votes in the legislature to get things done and they’re too incompetent to do so.
I sent her an email and called her on it. I told her she was disingenuous and distorted the situation in California. She said she would not communicate with me if I called her a liar. The truth hurts, girl!!!

@Emo Pantload (fka Studly): they use Vick in the “Wildcat” formation (which really isn’t anything other than having a back up take a snap). The Jets have been using Brad Smith the same way lately. The Jets have been using it to run honest to FSM option plays, and the few times I was subjected to Eagles games this year, it looks like that’s what they were doing to.
Almost everyone started doing it after Miami did it a few years ago losing their starter. They stole it from Arkansas where McFadden would be used in it quite a bit.

@Glocksman: I have to disagree: I think the Dallas cheerleaders are fine.
Because you weren’t using some sort of ridiculous ‘men I don’t like are girls’ analogy back there, right? Because seriously, I graduated middle school, like, two decades ago, and it was lame then.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)

I am still having a hard time coming to grips with all the bed wetting surrounding the recent shutdown of Newark airport.
Have we become a nation of paranoid and hysterical weenies? A free society comes with some risk, but apparently we’re willing to trade that for an incompetent securtiy state and a pathetic press corps which treats every minor incident as a terrifying grave threat and a reason to go into full lock-down mode.
All this will accomplish will be to prove that terrorism works spectacularly.
2 weeks ago, an incompetent terrorist manages to burn off his ballsack and, as a result, we’re shutting down major international airports and staging a full scale manhunt because some lovesick graduate student wants to be with his girlfriend. Sure, he acted like a fool, but is the response really proportionate?
Me thinks the government got burned and are throwing the book at him to cover their embarrassment.
I also feel badly for all the poor passangers needlessly stranded for hours, but if we all pulled our heads out of our asses, we wouldn’t be overreacting to all this in the first place.
All you people defending this security charade and a bunch of terrified cowards who deserve neither liberty, nor security.
I swear, if this were the Cuban Missile Crisis, we would have been so scared of Communists, we would have forced the entire country to hide under our beds, immediately before we pissed our pants and feinted.

Oh, are we having a cuteness war? Charlotte says, “Bring it.”

@Mnemosyne: Too cute! How old is your kitty?

@Mnemosyne:
Charlotte wins today’s battle!!
Mnemosyne
@WaterGirl:
In that picture, she was about six weeks old. She’s almost seven months old now. G (aka my spousal unit) found her and her sister in the parking lot at his office. Someone else took her sister, and we have finally decided to keep Charlotte.
She immediately decided that our cat Keaton was her new mommy, which is a little weird since he’s a neutered male. He’s a really, really nurturing neutered male, though, so he rolled with it.
MelodyMaker
Oh. No. Cuteness war is … hang on.
edit: ok, I’ll get back to ya. You win this one, yutsano. fukr. John Cole did put my tortie on the front page.
Mnemosyne
@General Winfield Stuck:
Now that she fetches, Charlotte will soon be the next YouTube star with her repertoire of fetching, jumping five feet in the air to try and look out the peephole in the front door, and taking a shower in the litter when G refills the litterbox. I just have to make him haul out and charge the good video camera and we will have the new Maru.
WaterGirl
@Mnemosyne: I have never been around kittens (only grown cats) so it’s amazing to see how different she looks at 7 months compared to her baby picture. :-) Very sweet photos with Keaton, too. You said you “finally decided” to keep Charlotte… has she been with you for the whole 6 months?
Mnemosyne
@WaterGirl:
It’s funny that she suddenly grew these high cheekbones like a supermodel after having her fuzzy kitten face. We’ve had her the whole time — we were the only ones willing to take her and her sister home for the weekend when G first found them. Someone else in his office was supposed to take both her and her sister, but she backed out. Someone else took her sister a few weeks later, but Charlotte just stayed. We kept saying we were just fostering her, but clearly we were fooling ourselves.

I hate to tell Bill Simmons, but the two teams that are big-play passing teams lost today. Maybe running is important (NYJ-Cin both rushed for 171 yards; Dallas 198-56).

Welcome home, asianGrllMN. It’s getting warmer soon. I’ll be running around in shorts by Wednesday.

@Mnemosyne: I had a dog like that. First I kept him for a week while my friends (who lived next door to the people that abandoned him) went on their one week vacation. Then I was just keeping him until they found someone who could take him (so he wouldn’t be moved to yet another temporary location and then have move again). Then I was just keeping him for a few weeks until my friends fenced in their yard and could take him. Before you knew it he was my dog. I never wanted a big dog, a boy dog, or a black dog, and he was all three, but he was a truly great dog and we never looked back.
Mnemosyne
@WaterGirl:
Of the three cats, she’s the only one who will regularly sit in my lap and not just on special occasions, so that didn’t hurt her chances. ;-)
WaterGirl
@Mnemosyne: No, I don’t suppose it did! :-)
Three weeks ago I lost my sweet kitty. I was never a cat person, but I fell for him like a ton of bricks. He had the best personality, met me at the door, sat in my lap, snuggled with me at night, came when I called him, used the scratching post, was part of the pack with the dogs. I miss him terribly and I can’t imagine ever finding anyone like him again.
I am watching all the kitty pictures with great interest and they all seem sweet. But when you have a kitten, how could you ever know what they will look like and what the personality will turn out to be?

The Cowboys need to lose and lose and lose and lose. Maybe after 5000 or so losses, they will have atoned for daring to call themselves “America’s team”. Then again, maybe not. There is, of course, only one pro football team which can even consider calling itself America’s team-the Green Bay Packers.
asiangrrlMN
@Mnemosyne: Aw, your Charlotte is sooo cute (as are the usual resident cats, Smudge, Bea, Toby, Henri, Momo, etc., and, of course, our FYWP overlord, Tunch). I have read that neutered male cats actually do really well as adopted mommies of fostered kittens, so Keaton is in good company.
All the kittehs are teh cute, obviously, so I declare a tie.
But, for the pure joy of it, RedKitten wins the intertoobz for her vid of SamKitten bouncing around in glee. Yutsano knows me all-too-well. I let out a big “Awwwwww” when I clicked on the link.

@WaterGirl:
You can’t know ahead of time, but that’s part of the, er, rich tapestry of life or some such. [*cough*] You’ll find another cat–if you want to, and when the time is right. The new cat won’t be like your recently departed sweet kitty, but you’ll have a new great relationship–the relationship that you’re supposed to have with the new cat.
Short version: it’s all good. You’re hurting now, and that’s okay. Remember the good times. They will come again. Take it from this ol’ cat wrangler.
asiangrrlMN
@Steeplejack: Seconded. WaterGirl, there will never be a cat to replace your beloved, but there can be a cat who will fill your heart in a completely different way. Kittens are a crapshoot when you get ’em, like kids. If you would rather know the personality of your cat, it might be better to get an adult one. At any rate, your heart will let you know when you’re ready.

@PTirebiter:
Ha!
Though if the Brett Farve who has 400+yard and 3 touchdown games* shows up next week, I wonder if you’ll be so humorous then??
*Of course the risk is that the Brett Farve who throws 7 INT’s, 3 of which are returned for TD’s will show up instead.
I guess that’s part of what makes watching the Vikings (I normally don’t care about the Vikes either way) interesting.

My real team is teh Stillers and has been since 1974.
That holds true despite being a lifelong Hoosier whose second favorite team is the Colts.
I cheer the Colts on unless they’re playing Pittsburgh.
That said. on more than one occasion I’ve wondered if I’d make it out of the sports bar alive after shouting ‘YES’ when Pittsburgh scored against Indy.
Despite the dirty looks I always have, so I guess we redneck Hoosiers are either more civilized than English soccer hooligans or we just really don’t care after all. :)

Can I just say how much I LOVE how the PUMA’s are using some serious pretzel logic to blame Obama for the things coming out in the Halperin, etal book about WJC and HRC.
Next week is going to be so much fun!
Also, too. Did anyone see Donna Brazile “debate” Liz Cheney? Donna said on Twitter she was going to, but I’m in CA, so I didn’t see it.

@WaterGirl:
Older kittens — from about 4 months old on up — will have fairly developed personalities, so you’ll have a good idea of what they’ll be like from the start. Young kittens are definitely a crapshoot, which is one of the reasons Charlotte was on the bubble for so long. We had to wait and see what direction she was going before we could make a final decision. If she turned out to be a loner, we were all going to be much happier if we found her a home where she could rule all with one paw. So far, it looks like she wants to be the new #2 in the pecking order but is otherwise perfectly content living as part of a pride, so I think we’ll be okay.
We lost two cats in two years — including my sweetheart Boris, who I’d had since my last year of college — so I understand the reluctance to get another animal that’s going to break your heart someday. It helped that we had two at a time so when we saw how lonely Boris was on his own, we went out and got him a kitten. (Which he didn’t appreciate at first, of course. ;-) My mom and my brother both had only one cat and they both swear they’re never going to get another one because losing that one after 17 or 20 years was just too painful.

@Glocksman:
I like to think I keep my sense of humor come rain or shine.
I grew up in Los Angeles rooting for the old Rams, so it was pretty much a necessity.
The truth is, after the second loss to the Giants, my expectations hit bottom; last night’s beat-down of the Eagles pretty much made my season. I’m expecting the Cows to beat the Vikings, but if Favre is off the charts, and we lose a close one, I’ll be fine. Oddly enough, when they’re not facing Dallas, I pull for the Steelers and pour on the Iron.

I get so sick of you butt-hurt, Cowboy haters and this “Daring to call themselves America’s Team” rant that comes out of ignorant mouths.
The Dallas Cowboys never dubbed themselves “America’s Team”. Wow, wouldn’t that be great if you could choose a title for yourself and everyone else just had to repeat it over and over again until it eventually became truth?
NFL Films back in the 70s dubbed Dallas “America’s Team” and since that time the general media has run with it. You know why? Because it is true. The Dallas Cowboys have far and away the largest fan base of ANY sports franchise in the US, Football or otherwise. It was true in the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, the 00s and it is still true today. You do not become THE most Valuable franchise in the sports universe because no-one is watching you.
