This is great news:
Filed to ESPN: Former Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El is returning to Pittsburgh, agreeing to a three-year deal with the team tonight.
The Steelers also signed Will Allen and Ryan Clark, so I would say that Limus Sweed’s days are numbered.
I suppose we should start looking at QB’s in the draft, considering our starting QB is either going to get shot by a jealous college boyfriend or be serving time for sexual assault if his stupid ass does not get himself pulled together.
General Egali Tarian Stuck
I blame his momma for naming him that.
Steve
Why don’t you give Randle El a shot at QB? He was an excellent QB in college.
demo woman
considering our starting QB is either going to get shot by a jealous college boyfriend or be serving time for sexual assault if his stupid ass does not get himself pulled together.
I’m not sure that “sexual manipulation” (must credit the AJC) is actually a felony but he might be dropped for being a jerk. Gee.. Ben is making Brees look like a Saint. Oh yeah, he is a Saint isn’t he.
Martin
It’s not Big Ben’s ass that’s the problem. Flip him over.

@General Egali Tarian Stuck: Clearly, this is all Rahm’s fault.
Vlad
Two things:
1) It’s Limas, not Limus.
2) Did we ever find out what his “non-football illness”/”undisclosed personal issues” were?
West of the Cascades
Please trade Ben to Buffalo. A quarterback in jail or shot would be an upgrade on our stable of third-stringers.
DarrenG
@Vlad:
I believe he was diagnosed with a chronic case of Hands Of Stone, coupled with a complicating illness of Severe Alligator Arm. Truly a debilitating condition. There should be a telethon…
mr. whipple
The Browns also had a couple good signings.
I’d love to see the once-great rivalry return.
demo woman
Gotta admit that when Ben hired Ed Garland to represent him does not look good.

Hello? It’s almost baseball season. Warm summer nights, crack of the bat, take me out to the ballgame, cold beer, Pennant race, playoff baseball.
Why are you talking about football? Don’t you remember the Pirates?
Oh wait…nevermind.
J. Michael Neal
@demo woman: Well, it seems to be some sort of sexual manipulation that involved a trip to the hospital.
J. Michael Neal
For the Matt Taibbi fans in the crowd, there are some nice tidbits about how he treats people in this article on The Exile, the paper he co-ran in Moscow for six years.

@mr. whipple:
Seeing Fujita go to Cleveland is so sad. I know it’s all business, and he was very complementary to NOLA in local interviews after the news broke. The Browns threw a boatload of cash at him, and I don’t blame him a bit for taking it. But he’s become quite popular here, and really embraced being a New Orleanian.
But Jeez! Cleveland?! Has he ever been to Cleveland??
ajr22
That would have been a good signing 5 years ago when he was decent. You guys have Ward, Holmes, and Wallace I don’t see randle El doing much. Ill never forget the play he made while playing QB at Indiana against Illinois, he ran side line to side line for 25 seconds before he took it to the house.
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
I can see how tough it must be. Browns fans are no doubt overjoyed, not just because of his talent but he also seems like an incredible person.
JenJen
Aroldis is looking solid in Reds spring training, too.
To every sport, there is a season…
HRA
@West of the Cascades:
LOL I almost choked on my coffee. Can we keep Fred?
Corner Stone
@DarrenG:
Hey now…take it easy on Limas. Dude’s a genius. In a performance art kinda way.
Limas could drop balls other receivers only dreamed about dropping. And make it look easy.
Anyone who ever watched him play simply had to bow before perfection.
madmommy
@mr. whipple:
But Cleveland? sigh….
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
Hey now. Cleveland has much to recommend it.
It ain’t too crappy for Lebron.
JR
But at least he bikes with a helmet now….
It doesn’t matter, though: the Eagles will take anyone this side of Gacy who can play QB, as they’ve already demonstrated.

@mr. whipple:
I grew up in Cleveland. It snowed brown snow. The Cuyahoga River caught on fire! Just recently it was number one on the list of most unlivable cities. Besides, he’s a DFH, liberal, gay rights advocating Berkley hippie. He belongs in NOLA!
LeBron is gonna leave, too. His next team will be in New York.
JenJen
@mr. whipple:
“Our economy’s based on Lebron James.”
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
“I grew up in Cleveland. It snowed brown snow.”
That’s because at one time they had industry. No more, so no more brown snow.
“The Cuyahoga River caught on fire!”
The Cuyahoga river is now so clean that steelhead trout, sturgeon and walleye have been caught in it.
“Just recently it was number one on the list of most unlivable cities.”
The list was, frankly, stupid.
“Besides, he’s a DFH, liberal, gay rights advocating Berkley hippie. He belongs in NOLA!”
By that logic, he belongs in Berkley.
“LeBron is gonna leave, too. His next team will be in New York.”
Nope.
madmommy
Fujita is just the beginning. The vultures will be circling, picking our bones like a dead possum on the side of the road. The team owner made his fortune as a car salesman, he’s not gonna pay what a lot of other teams will.
But I’m not bitter :)
ajr22
Best video about Cleveland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysmLA5TqbIY
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
“But I’m not bitter :) ”
You shouldn’t be. Really. You still have a great city. You got to the biggest show and won. Still a lot of cities that can’t say that.
Ahem.
JenJen
@ajr22: I’m from Cincinnati and it’s a part of our Charter of Citizenship that I can make fun of Cleveland, but even I think we’re starting to pile on poor mr. whipple at this point. ;-)
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@mr. whipple: GO Browns !!. You ain’t alone dude.
JenJen
@General Egali Tarian Stuck: Did you really have to go there?
madmommy
@mr. whipple:
Yeah, I know. But he really seems like a good guy, any city would be lucky to have him. I just wish it was still us. The Saints have sucked for so long that we’re not quite sure how to deal with this whole winning thing.
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
The Browns are so pathetic, a local TV sports show opened one episode with one of the guys wearing a brown paper bag on his head. Remember those?
Anyway, it looks like they might be on the right track with Holmgren et al.
Redshirt
This is going to be a crazy upcoming Fantasy Football season, due to the uncapped salaries and the plethora of roster moves. Those who are willing to invest more time in research before their draft should be paid off more so than the norm this year. I’m already getting ready!
mr. whipple
@JenJen:
Cinci? That conservatard hellhole, across the river from the Creationist Museum? You wish to mock Cleveland?
victory
As long as they keep ARE behind Mike Wallace on the depth chart I will be OK with this.
That Wallace kid can play.
Shit Disturber
I mean…cah MAHN.
The only reason I root against the Steelers is because it’s Rush Limbaugh’s favorite team. And that’s reason enough.
West of the Cascades
@HRA: I surely hope so. How about a trade of Roethlisberger for Lynch and a misdemeanor to be named later?
arguingwithsignposts
Nothing like a little Ohio smack talking to lighten up the evening. :)
madmommy
@mr. whipple:
Hmmm…brown paper bags? That seems to ring some sort of bell. Matter of fact, they just held a jazz funeral for the “Aint’s” paper bag a couple of weeks ago. We’re all about the big gesture!
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@mr. whipple:
I’d rather he be coach, but team president will do, for now.
mr. whipple
@madmommy:
LOL. Awesome.
I was so happy when they won.
This is a wild story: the night before the Super Bowl I was playing with the AM radio and for the first time I picked up NO WWL 870. I took that as a sign. People were calling in, so juiced about the game. :)
mr. whipple
@General Egali Tarian Stuck:
“I’d rather he be coach, but team president will do, for now.”
He might end up there. Heh.
joe
Have fun with Randle El – he was pretty much worthless down here with the Skins. His first year here was his best, the rest, not so good. I saw his being let go as a sign of progress in the Skins front office. Now if we could only get Portis to hit the road, that would be even better.
JenJen
@mr. whipple:
Boy, do I ever, especially when it comes to sports. And don’t pin that Creationist Museum, nor the Sweet Buttery Jesus of I-75, on us. Our suburbs are, admittedly, out of fucking control. (See: Boehner, Schmidt)
But that shit is not the ‘Nati! Awww hell no.
madmommy
@mr. whipple:
The month of playoffs up to the Super Bowl was, without a doubt, the craziest, happiest thing I have ever seen. People were so excited! Impromptu “Who Dat” chants would start up in grocery stores, everyone was sporting team colors, and there was a parade of a bunch of guys in dresses that was thrown together at the last minute. There were thousands of people!
mr. whipple
@JenJen:
“Boy, do I ever, especially when it comes to sports.”
How’s your basketball team doing?
JenJen
@mr. whipple: Der, I don’t know, but how did your football team fare in our conference last season? I’m scared you might throw HOCKEY at me next. Because, that’s right, football doesn’t mean anything anymore, not in Cleveland.
Bet our casino opens before yours does. Huzzah! Hey, oh, where did you go, Ohio?
(I still love you bruh. So long as you didn’t do your undergrad at Michigan.)
Corner Stone
@joe:
Every time someone refers to the physical location of DC it throws me off. I always think of it as being in Northern Yankeeville and am amused when others use slang to refer to its Southern physical positioning.
mr. whipple
Nah, Harvard on the Hocking. Wife is OSU alum.
It’s gonna come back, you’ll see. And Cleveland won’t have a team filled with felons, to boot. :)
JenJen
@mr. whipple: Harvard-on-the-Hocking here, too. So I guess we’re allies after all!
I knew I liked you.
mr. whipple
@JenJen:
OMG! That is so awesome. We are buds.
And actually, we may talk some smack but Cinci is ok. I got a nephew down at UC, and I love this place.
drkrick
This is good news only if you hate the Steelers or have paid no attention to the Redskins over the last couple a seasons (which I would recommend but it’s been hard to look away from the train wreck). ARE has been either criminally undermotivated or long past his sell-by date for a while now.
Joel
@demo woman: at least he didn’t hide in the trunk of an associate’s car after the crime in question occurred.
Incertus (Brian)
@mr. whipple:
Remember those? I think we invented those during our 1-15 season where we were called the “Aints.”
Incertus (Brian)
@Shit Disturber:
Are they really? That seems strange, given the Steelers ownership and all.
Stephen
Gotta do something to keep up with those Ravens.
(I never thought I’d type that – as a Ravens fan or otherwise)
Stephen
@Shit Disturber:
Rush is from Cape Girardeau, MO. I think he’s a Rams (or maybe Cardinals) or Chiefs fan.
But if he’s a Steelers fan, even more reason for me to not like ’em.
Ranger 3
Jesus Boy should be available in the draft. He may not transition well to the pro game, but I can say with some certainty that he won’t be raping anyone anytime soon. Of course some of the worst perverts are of the Jesus Freak variety, but Jesus Boy doesn’t seem like the type.
Corner Stone
@Ranger 3:

I’m just waiting for a newer Open Thread before really unloading, but can we give it up for Matt Cooke. Stay classy Pittsburg.
Daddy-O
@Stephen, Incertus (Brian):
I shit you not. Check it out. Rush Limbaugh is a fan of the Steelers, more than any other team, and has been since the 70s.
You should probably be glad you were ignorant of such information. I have to ask myself: Why is it that I know this? It’s not because I am a fan of Rush’s, that’s for sure…

I’m always amazed when one of these athletes gets involved in a sex abuse/rape/molestation/drug-then-rape/sexual harassment/extramarital affair that blows up into domestic violence thing. If they happen to be young or new to the being rich and famous thing they might have an excuse but Ben R? What the fuck? I begin to think the dude may be bent.
