@Elvis Elvisberg: Didja ever see Treat Her Right? Sandman’s band pre Morphine (although at any given time he was probably gigging with a half dozen Boston bands). You might enjoy them too.
Morphine…. man. I got to see the surviving members play “Honey White” with Les Claypool about a year back. I can’t even tell you how great it was. Lucky for me, it turned up on Youtube, though the recording is pretty lousy.
Morphine was my favorite ever. Saw them in one day on with Primus, Squrrel Nut Zippers, S.C.O.T.S., and Neil Young. That was a good lineup.

@MikeJ: I never did see them, but found some of their LPs in Boston & Cambridge. It was interesting, hearing him in a band with another lead singer. I still listen to “I Think She Likes Me” on occasion– definitely a similar theme to “Thursday.”

Since it’s an open thread, and I’m a musical/pop cultural ignoramus, I’ll ignore all the comments to date.
But did people see the big states-rights story at the New York Times? These people scare me.
You’re telling me. I’m contemplating a move to AZ in the next 6-8 months or so, and everyone’s out by the time I go to sleep in CST.

@asiangrrlMN: I’m sure I can come up with something. Now remind me why I volunteered to make traditional Irish food for work tomorrow when just about everyone else is bringing either Mexican or traditional party stuff.
Morphine was awesome, especially live. Super Sex was my favorite.

This blog lacks real insomniacs. Just sayin, commenting normally gets real slow late night. Watching the show Spartacus on starz, def the most violent show i have ever seen.
@ajr22: Hey! I resent that remark. I am a true insomniac, I’ll have you know! Plus, we have commenters from around the world who chime in at all hours.
Oh god I should not have spent that last hour arguing on the internet about politics I have to get this finished aaa

@Yutsano: Colcannon! An excellent choice for this time of year. As I’m sure you know, it can be made with any kind of greens… so, combining the first tender greens of Spring with the last of winter’s potatoes, plus butter from the newly-freshened cows, my ancestors got a perfect no-meat “Lenten” meal to fill everyone up and remind us that the hard times of Winter were allllmost past.
Just don’t stint on the butter, and ignore anyone who whines about cholesterol. Much butter is essential!
29.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I do the kale variation mostly because I like the firmness it keeps even after a long cooking. Plus it looks better even after you slow steam it. That plus Yukon gold potatoes equals delish!
@Anne Laurie: There shall, indeed, be much butter. In fact, I plan on bringing extra should folks decide they want more for their serving to taste. I just hope there will be enough!

@freelancer: Not really, the plot is a clear rip off of gladiator. The visuals are a clear rip of of 300 (not cool at all), and it has a poor man’s Rome vibe going. It’s 1:40 though and my tivo messed up my no reservation recording in Harbin China.
@mcc: Oh, just sit with us and jam a bit. It’ll wait.
@Yutsano: Kale is teh yum! And, Yukon gold potatoes? To die for!

@freelancer: His (Atrios’s) community back then was a lot less insular too, but that’s another story.
I remember that back in the day, he was yelling at Digby to get her own blog, before anyone knew that Digby was a she and a potentially great blogger. How right he was. How right he still is, especially about economics. The dude was my introduction to blogginess even back when he was commenting on the Horse. Especially because he was commenting on the Horse.
I’m not crazy about the commentariat at Eschaton these days. A lot of the good (and even great) ones from 5-7 years ago are gone, but he is still my definition of what a blogger should be. Duncan still gets to the point, and is very rarely refuted in any meaningful way. It’s very obvious to me, because I’ve heard him on the radio, that he would smash a mental cripple like ErickErickson into a pulp in a verbal way. But he never gets a chance at this. The only times I’ve ever heard him on the air was on Sam Seder’s long extinct show.
Too bad, but he never goes away, Mr. Black is as persistant and bothersome as a tick. Long and very long may he blog.

@asiangrrlMN: I confess one of my weaknesses in life is zuppa di Toscana. My mom makes a knock-off that’s better than the Olive Garden original (plus it’s much better when you can make your own adjustments) and I always dig out as much kale as I can when I ladle out my bowl. I think it ranks up there as one of my favorite greens.
@Yutsano: Italian sausage? I’m there! LOVE Italian sausage. I Googled the recipe, and it looks yuuuuuuuummmmmmmy!
Ok. I’ve gained ten pounds just by commenting here. Gotta go workout. Night!

@AnotherBruce: Atrios and TBogg were two of the best to come out of Salon’s TT. I am sure there were others but those are two that even I remember. The problem with Duncan right now is that he doesn’t seem to post anywhere as much as he used to. And I remember being shocked to find out that Digby was a woman. I had just assumed that it was a guy, some of it just plain based on the name. And, yes, you are completely right about the commenters at Atrios – they’re like a HS clique and they don’t even seem to realize it .
they’re like a HS clique and they don’t even seem to realize it .
I apparently came late to the party, because I can’t even understand what the hell they’re talking about half the time. Most opaque commenter community ever.
Fucking late winter cold. I’m nearing the end of week 2 of the thing, which has me waking up every morning at 4 with a head full of snot and hacking my lungs out.
On a pleasant note, here’s a Red Queen image which really needs to accompany every BJ FP thread about Jane Hamsher.
Goodness, Shane was young. So much hair, too. I find myself relieved that there will never be a Pogues night on American Idol after the reports about the Stones night.
Happy St. Patrick’s/Irish Pride Day, all. Don’t take any wooden snakes, don’t drink holy water and drive, and count your clover leaves before you pick ’em.

Slightly more bluesy than Morphine. Still good. I always thought of them, later, as Sandman working his way towards the Morphine concept.
