Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Everybody saw this coming.

Consistently wrong since 2002

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

This blog will pay for itself.

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Bark louder, little dog.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

As much fun as it might be to watch people you don’t like losing their shit, Democrats still have to pass this bill. If you do nothing else this week get on the bloody phone. These are Democrats we are talking about, people. Gloat later.

Tomorrow I WILL be making calls to Representatives Kissell and Etheridge here in NC. One is my Congressman and one is just over the border. Both have cashed our checks. Time to grow a pair….

Yes. I hope Nancy makes sure she ties their shoes, have their nametags on and lunch money the day of the vote.

Called Oberstar’s office today and promised that if he voted yes and got in trouble in the fall, I’d drive my ass to Duluth every weekend to knock doors and help get him reelected. Not sure it made a difference, but can’t hurt.

Called Barbara Lee. The staffer said she hasn’t announced a position but wanted to her from her constituents. I said vote yes yes yes. I can’t imagine she won’t vote for it. But I’m an Obot so what do I know.

BTW. Idol is doing Stones songs tonight and it makes me want to kill myself.

Remember people, the Firebaggers are desperate, and will be doing everything they can think of to Kill the Bill.

    Do it for the children.

Do it for the working moms.

    Do it for Rahm!

I’ve called my rep, John Adler (D-NJ), several times to tell him I WANT HIM TO VOTE FOR THE BILL.

When I first started calling, they told me he wasn’t going to. When I called him last Friday, they told me he still hasn’t decided, so I guess that’s progress. I told them that if he does vote against it, NOTHING HE CAN DO AFTER THAT will make up for it.

If he doesn’t vote for it, I’m calling them back on Monday to tell them that I WILL NOT BE VOTING FOR ADLER AGAIN, PERIOD.

No, as much as I think that Mike Kay is generally an asshole, I don’t think he’s wrong about this crowd this time.

Which hurts like hell because I’ve generally admired Jane. She’s tougher than nails and has fought off bouts of cancer a couple of times. But seriously, with the Supreme Asshole Court about to buy off our entire government, I don’t think that we have the luxury to fail on this one.

But seriously, folks . . . . Maybe pressuring Dennis did some good, although I suspect that Barack Obama has more political weight than I do.

This whole HCR effort has had a strange, now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t aspect to it. I am sure a proponent of one of the Eastern religions could draw a philosophical lesson from it but my brain doesn’t have a firm grip on it yet.

I called the office of my rep (John Hall, NY 19) last week and gave my ‘pass the bill’ request. Per usual the guy I had on the line was giving the ‘we will wait till we have an actual bill before we make a decision’ line. But he seemed appreciative of the Pass the Bill message. This is, however, an R+1 or 2 area, so I will call them again tomorrow. It is against my nature to be the squeaky wheel, but I’m always polite about my comments. Maybe that outweighs the loud tea partiers, maybe not.

Think of this health care bill as the equivalent of the Nixon bill that Teddy Kennedy rejected back in the 70s. If we lefties get stomped for a couple decades by the corporate media complex we are going to be damn glad for having taken the compromise this time around.

Speaking of Top Ten Lists of half-hearted post-election handjobs… Actually, why NOT stick Bernie Madoff into whatever hole he’ll fill? If I understand the mechanics of civil rights and Great Society legislation correctly, in four years Madoff will disappear like magic and a greatly superior candidate will sort of slide into his position, twirling, twirling ever upward.

I mean, Madoff sucks the peanuts out of a dead elephant’s rectum, but… can we take the risk that a whole generation might pass without a better candidate coming along? And when I say “candidate” I really mean “mechanically spread buttcheeks for the Treatment Without Cure Complex, as aided and abetted by Congressional vermin.”

Quick, let’s crap our pants in fear! Ring the unembarrassed bells in favor of eating dookie sandwiches! And burn the heretics while you’re about it!

At least Carter only suggested wearing sweaters in winter, and didn’t recommend cranking up the furnace and wearing wife-beaters in the name of bipartisanship (subject to later negotiation). Dem White House, Dem Senate, Dem House. Until the next election, that is, and you’d best believe it. It’ll never be better than this, and good luck explaining to Obama voters why they should get up off the couch in 2012.

I’ll give Betty McCollum’s office a call today. I’ve been calling about once a week and never have any trouble getting through. She’s most certainly a ‘yes’ vote, but the last couple calls I’ve been asking that she go over to give Oberstar a kick in the butt. Maybe today I’ll call Oberstar’s office and see if they listen to anyone outside the district.

TBogg’s got a post up this morning asking everyone to ‘chill the fuck out’.

Rep. Driehaus’ staff insisted he has not made up his mind yet, when I called on Monday, although FDL’s whip lists him as a definite “no.”

Just today, I’ve noticed a burst of ads by Catholics United playing locally, urging Driehaus to vote yes.

@gbear: I need caffeine to wash down the dookie sandwich. Besides, the “Please, sir, can I have some more” Breakfast Special is such a bargain, who can pass it up?

(Or keep it down, but we’ll fix that in midnight rewrite. History is written by the gnomes who actually set the 1,000-page bill in type. Not that laws have ever, ever been tinkered with after the final vote but before the official publication; that’s crazy conspiracy talk.)
