Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

No one could have predicted…

Battle won, war still ongoing.

We still have time to mess this up!

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

    Nice shirt!

I donated to Act Blue, btw, and I’m also going to send a few bucks to Louise Slaughter. Wouldn’t it send a good message if we raised some money for everybody whose offices have been vandalized (not to mention who’s been spat on, etc.)?

Hey, are all those who think that this bill and the various regulations and subsidies that go along with it are bound to cause a disaster willing to put their money/reputations/dignity where their mouths are?

Perhaps we should set up some sort of challenge. I’ve been reading some blog posts over the last day, and even well before that, that say how this is a fiscal nightmare waiting to happen. Maybe so, but why not bet on it? If it does, in fact, lead to lots of bad things, you’ll be right, and someone on our side will do something that you want. But if you are wrong, you have to do something, like wear that shirt or something similar for a year (not the same one all year, just different copies of it) at all of your conservative meetings.

What do do you think they’d say?

I just read the WaPo article about how the end game played out. After Obama and his team had made every argument possible Altmire still voted no, and Obama went back one last time to convince him:

On Friday morning, Altmire e-mailed Emanuel. Despite the party on St. Patrick’s Day at the White House, a sit-down with Emanuel, a few more phone calls from the president and three from Cabinet-level officials, Altmire planned to announce that he would vote no.__
“Don’t do it,” Emanuel punched back on his BlackBerry. At 4 p.m., Altmire released his statement and at 7:30 Obama called once more.__
“I want to give you something to think about before the vote,” the president said gently into the phone. “Picture yourself on Monday morning. You wake up and look at the paper. It’s the greatest thing Congress has done in 50 years. And you were on the wrong team.”

Wonder how Altmire feels this morning?

I don’t know. I’ve really hated Ceci Connolley and her work for a long, long time. This is the first article ever where I can’t quite see where the knife is. The article is very admiring and there’s relatively little backhanding–however I think it could easily have been written in such a way that it could have been published with a different ending if the Democrats had lost. That’s very much her style–she’s a kiss up/kick down kind of writer and as long as I’ve been reading her she’s been sucking up to the Republicans. I hope this article as the start of a sea change as media types like Connolley readjust their screens for a new view of Dems which is flattering. If they decide that Obama is their new macho dream, they’ll be as forgiving to him and his party as they were to Bush.
