Someone is very much liking his new windows:

He spent the entire morning making guttural sounds at the birds through the screen door. And that is a grease smudge on his back- apparently he found his way to the garage.

Tunch will never look at you again.

So have you put the old laz-e-boy and couch out on the front porch yet to impress the neighbors?

My brand new neighbors just put up a 6′ high chain link pen smack in the middle of their side yard. Doesn’t look like it’s more than 6’x10′ and nowhere near any shade. I hope this doesn’t go badly, but I’ll put animal protection on speed dial if it does.

And they better stay off my lawn.

We have pigeons, mockingbirds, and other flying creatures outside, and our cats make the same sound. We call it “chortling.” If they see us walking towards the door, all of them will run down the stairs together and meow loudly until we let them out (our very small front yard is fenced in well enough to keep the cats within)

Henri triggers more on the Squirrels than the birds, but then he is part dog. However he makes little chirping noises when he espies them. Ironically, Momo the 1/2 Siamese is silent when she’s hunting in the window, but she makes up for it with the tail dance.

I must protest at the characterizations of Tunch’s tail as “brown.” His tail is orange-and-white striped (if I’m reading all his pictures correctly). My dearly departed, dearly beloved cat Fred had very similar coloring: a snow-white body, orange splotches on the head, and a striped tail. (My then-husband once encountered what must have been Fred’s cousins, all colored the same, on a street near ours, so we knew roughly where he came from.) I think that’s one reason why I love Tunch so much. I miss Fred.

I’m so happy to see Tunch happy! Congratulations!

I have a few questions for cat owners who have had a cat die and adopted a new kitten (or older cat):

How long did you wait before getting a new cat? How did you know when it was time? If you got a new kitten or cat after only a short amount of time, did you regret it or feel like you weren’t honoring your previous pet? Did your new cat or kitten resemble your older one physically, and did that turn out to be a good or bad choice?

Howard Kurtz (!) questions Ewick on his language, and it is hi-larious:

KURTZ: On the administration’s health care spokeswoman, you wrote, “Linda Douglass is really the Joseph Goebbels of the health care shop.”
    __
You’re comparing her to a notorious Nazi?

KURTZ: The first lady, you wrote the following — the headline was, “Is Obama shagging hookers behind the media’s back?” And you write, “I assume not. I assume that Obama’s Marxist harpy wife would go Lorena Bobbit on him should he even think about it.”
    __
Why would you describe Michelle Obama in those terms?

KURTZ: Well, let’s deal with the David Souter comment. When Justice Souter announced his retirement, you said, you wrote, “The nation loses the only goat (EXPLETIVE) child molester ever to serve on the Supreme Court.”
    __
    Do you regret writing that?

KURTZ: I stumbled upon something you wrote about a Washington State controversy in which you said, “At what point do people march down to their state legislator’s house, pull them aside and beat him to a bloody pulp for being an idiot?”
    __
Now, I assume you were being metaphorical, but some people might react differently to that.

And, yet, CNN hired him. What do you have to say to fail a job interview at CNN?

I mean, you can call a Supreme Court Justice a goat-fucking child molester, despite being appointed by a President from your own party, simply because he just isn’t Republican/partisan enough, as a judge (!), and still get hired by CNN.

Damn. Can I get a job as a CNN analyst if I just call Justice Scalia, when he retires, “the syphilitc child-fucking illegitimate get of Eva Braun”*? ‘Cause I’m willing …

Some would think the namesake thing is weird. To me, it’s honoring the original Max. Like naming a child after a grandparent.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has done this in the BJ world.

P.S. I haven’t told Max the Wheaten he’s named after a cat. Considering how much he hates cats, I’m afraid it might plunge him into some self-loathing. :)

P.P.S. – Ordering pizza this evening and this one caught my eye.. cheese, fresh brie, olive oil, fresh garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh tomatoes, red bell pepper and fresh cracked black pepper on a sour dough crust. I think we have a winner.

Heh! In my neck of the woods (DC Metro area), we call that funny sound cats make when watching birds or squirrels ‘chittering.’

We’ve then expanded the usage to apply to any time a human gets really excited at seeing something they want. For example, “FoxinSocks started to chitter when she walked into the used bookstore full of history and mythology books.”

@Ty Lookwell: When my first cat of 16 years died, I lasted a whole three days before I broke down and went to a cat rescue. There was this empty hole in my heart that I had to fill. The cat I got ended up, by chance, looking very different than the first, and she could never replace my first one, who was the best most anti-social, mis-behaving, well-loved cat that my family ever saw, but she helped with the healing process a great deal.

Since then, I’ve had a couple of other cats pass away and it always seemed immediately afterwards that some poor stray would show up on my doorstep, looking for a home. I think the universe knows when to send me cats.

And I have to admit, it’s not always that cats show up on my doorstep (though that does happen), it’s that they show up on my friends’ doorsteps (or with the latest one, ran out into the middle of the road, stopped my friend’s car, then climbed in and sat in the back seat all “Chaffeur! And I realized that I actually reached a point where people listen to what I say and care about what I say, and frankly it was a wake-up call to me that I had to grow up in how I write.

    Ty Lookwell:
Our cat died a few days after we moved into a new home – he was old (18), and had been ill, and I think the move just upset him even more: no eating, no defecating, heartbeat high, and panting. We took him to the vet, where he spent the night on drips and then we asked for him to be put to sleep the next morning because he was still so ill – he purred as he died, and we cried. I then went back to my parents’ home, for 5 months, to help my mom while my dad died of neck cancer. My partner, meanwhile, was left in a cat-less house, and when I came back, we decided it was time to bring a new cat into our house. We chose a grown-up cat – we’d never really considered a kitten, because our first cat was an adult – and there’s so many adult cats that need homes, while kittens get grabbed up right away. When we went to the cat rescue, I gravitated towards cats that looked my old fellow, but my partner found a wonderful cat, completely unlike the previous felid, and I know he was right – better to have a new feline companion, than one that is a replication of what you’ve lost. If you really are considering adopting a kitten, then consider adopting siblings – they will love you, but also feel happy being left alone with each other. Older cats need more individual attention, unless they’re used to being with other cats at a later-than-kitten stage. Some older cats may have had terrible trauma in their lives, and as a result may exhibit sad or disturbing behaviors that won’t change and can be difficult to live with/accommodate, but most older cats are incredibly adaptable and loyal, and are alone mainly because their humans have either died, or cannot afford them anymore. I wish you good luck whichever route of cat adoption you take.

    @beltane:

It’s an after-market replacement tail. They couldn’t find one in the original color in Tunch’s size.

ETA: Damn, I see that Hippie Killer got in ahead of me. Late to the thread again!

Great. The ONE night I skip out on BJ (I watched yesterday’s March Madness games today), you post not one, but TWO pics of his glorious Tunchitude. Harumph.

He looks sooooo good by his new window. I’m taking it he’s settled in, then?

As for the noise, that’s universal cat for, ‘Gonna kill the birdie!’

@ruemara: Heh. I clicked on your links without reading your username first, and I expected to see arguing’s white Smudgey! Your Smudge is oh-so-cute, too!

@KyCole: Aw, bless you for taking the poor mite in (especially a black kitty). Pics when you can!

@Ty Lookwell: I’m so sorry for your loss. It must be rough on you. I will just repeat what everyone else has said–there is no set answer. When the time is right, your mom will know. My condolences to you and your family.

@furioso ateo: Cool that you got to meet the prez. Thank you for your service and stay safe.

arguingwith, I clicked on the other Smudge and was quite taken aback to see that the cat in question was black and white! Heh.
