Doug, I’m afraid you’ll have to be demoted for your fail today. You’re a Gold Rifleman now. On the upside, it’s good to see that Glenn Greenwald is as pleasant on a personal level as he is on his blog.

Can we agree to a moratorium on GG/JH related comments? If nothing else, the two of them have become intolerably boring. I was thinking of checking out the new and improved Hutaree site, but I have a feeling I’ll regret it if I do.

I’m a long time reader of Glennzilla, and know of the Hamsher/FDL controversy with regards to HCR, but my eyes glazed over after about 5 minutes of clicking through all the links about the controversy du jour.
Geez, talk about the definition of inside baseball.
Really, what is more important right now is that Sci Fi needs to start showing Stargate Universe right the fuck now. Its been too long!

Wait, are you saying the stanford band is Tailgunner Glenn?
BombIranForChrist
I have been reflecting on the Great Glenn Scuffle today, and I am pretty frustrated with how these schisms attempt to force everyone into little camps, where I now feel this pressure to NEVAR READ GLENN EVAR because he HAS VIEWZ DIFFERENT THAN MINE.
And what’s equally frustrating is that Glenn pretty much contributed to that schismatic force today by writing a post that sounded like someone who was off his meds, rather than someone I have grown to respect vis a vis his work on Constitutional issues.
I think there are different classes of bloggers, and Glenn is getting dangerously close to joining that class that have FDL, DailyKOS and AmericaBlog (to a lesser degree), where it is US vs. THEM, MUTHAFUCKAS, and if you don’t agree with us, then you are the problem! You are no better than Bush himself!
Frustrating.
A very big reason I am not a Republican is because I do believe that Facts Matter and that therefore Rational Discussion Matters. We all have the right to go off our meds every once in a while, but I hope we can keep it together long enough to remain focused on Facts that Matter at any given moment rather than take every topic down the rabbit hole of factionalism, if that is even a word.

There was nothing really strange about the FEC filing, in that it looked very similar to pretty much every other consultant filing that you see.
There’s only the point that in much of the progressive blogosphere, political consultants are….lets just say they’re not well liked people. What was the guys name, HRC’s campaign manager who got nicely flamed during the primary?
The simple truth is that the progressive blogosphere, by and large does not trust..at all…the political consultant class. Even when they’re on “our” side.

Heh. I worked at that game (I was in high-school at the time) doing the vending thing in the stands. It looked like Stanford had it all nailed down so I split.

Biggest revelation for me after reading that link to “The Workbench” about Hamsher and her PAC was that she named Firedoglake in part after the L.A. Lakers. Now I have a reason to finally pick sides in this whole thing. Hamsher you’re going down, OKC Thunder all the way!

The context of The Play is what makes it great! The Bears were ahead and out of no where the Cardinal, led by John Elway staged a massive come from behind late game drive that, against all probability resulted in Stanford having a miraculous come from behind win. Everyone was a buzz with the amazing performance of Elway who squeaked out a major win against all odds. THIS was the story. All that remained were the few meaningless seconds associated with Stanford’s post-score kick off.
Then.
This play happened.
And ever since, all of Elway’s heroics have been overshadowed by a trombone player getting plowed in the end zone. No one even remembers that just moments before a future hall of famer gave one of his best collegiate performances of all time.

Pricing on the Nissan Leaf is out:
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hMjtv3PlpOSZAvVgjHWfi5d2Lr0AD9EP8FJ00
Way of the future, or a gimmick?
The $25,000 Nissan Leaf will have a range of 100 miles. Charge time @ 220v is 8 hours. Cost to drive is $2.80 per charge, or about $0.03 / mile. A standard gasoline car costs about $0.10 / mile. So you’d have to drive the Leaf about 140,000 miles to make up the initial price difference between it and, say, a $15,000 Honda Fit.

I graduated Cal in ’99, when their football program hit its nadir. I was in the band and it was a miserable 3 years of rooting for the crappiest team in the PAC-10. On the plus side, the band played good music and drank like fishes. On the massively negative side, I had to endure jeers from the Stanfurd band, which plays awesome and also drinks like fishes, but dude, those guys look like dorks on the field, were drunk before sunrise, had really weird incomprehensible field “shows”, and they lectured me on my marching.
When I was supposed to be cultivating a love of football–a sport whose rules I never internalized until college, nor enjoyed watching before because it was a hyper-masculine and I was metro before we had polite words for such things–I was given the most depressing the most uninspiring team to try to care about. And the athletes, even though they sucked, still acted like assholes to the only people who came out and rooted for them when they were sucking so sucky. The vengeful part of my soul hopes that they’re not really enjoying their middle management jobs at a local fast-food chain.
When this blog goes all ga-ga for some local sports team, I go read FDL or DKos. Hell, I’ve even gone to RedState or LGF. Doesn’t Kos run his own sports blog for folks who, you know, WANT TO TALK ABOUT SPORTS ALL THE TIME?
And while I’m cranky, I cannot understand (and I’ve tried, I really have! I even have “One Nation Under Dog” in my library queue) why people let their pets into their house, much less into their duvets.

Hey, has anyone heard anything about this story that Palin’s daughter Willow (I think she’s the 14-yo) was with a bunch of kids who broke into a vacant house in Wasilla (I think) and partayed and did about $20,000 worth of damage?
The thing I saw (on the rarely entertaining, always ill-written Newshounds blog so, you know, FWIW) said that boys were charged criminally but charges against the girls including WP were dropped.
Interesting thing is that this episode was apparently the reason Todd and Sarah rushed back home so abruptly from their Hawaii vacation a few months ago. The story at the time was that paparazzi had taken pictures of SP in a McCain cap with his name blacked out with Magic Marker, and their privacy was invaded so they went home. But now it seems there may have been a more compelling and urgent reason.
This is all alleged and I haven’t any idea whether any part of it is true. Maybe the story’s been out there and I’ve simply missed it. Has anyone else heard this? Do you think it’s true? Is it schadenfreude time again? Too soon?
If you feel like reading for yourself what I saw, it’s over at http://www.newshounds.us (“We watch FOX so you don’t have to”).

So, as a Stanford grad, I need to point out that the guy was stopped, down, down downer than down, and that this whole thing was entirely bogus. Not to mention the illegal formation and the forward lateral. And the “downer than ever” bit.
I am fortunate that I was 3000 miles away when this happened, because I might still be in jail.
All that said, now that it is nearly 30 years later, I think it is probably the greatest play in history. Even though the guy was down. Very much down.
I ran into Rogers (I think it was him) several years later after a Big Game when we were running around on the field after the game, lateraling a ham that we had. He was working security I believe. Nice guy, we joked around about how he was down. Which he was.

@IndyLib: Nice thing with digital, take a pic and copy it, play with the copy, just do stuff to it. Sometimes I mess it up and just delete it, make another copy and start over. As long as you have the original you’re fine. Oh, and take a lot of pics, use different settings on multiple shots of the same thing. See what happens. I guess I’m in the minority again in that I really enjoy Tim Burton when he’s good (Nightmare, Charlie, etc.) and am severely disappointed when he’s bad (Sweeney Todd, Big Fish). It helps that he often uses Ewan McGregor, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and, sigh, Alan Rickman.

@Max: Seahawks Stadium (or Qwest Field, gak) is a VERY beautiful building not far from the water or downtown. In fact, the stadium is right across the street from Safeco Field (where the Mariners play) so it’s more or less a single purpose compound right there. Oh and there’s the SLUT.

The thing that just makes me call bullshit on the whole thing is that I’m a poor grad student roughly the same age as the guy and I’ve never encountered “all these women who will only date older guys with money”. It just sort of amazed me that Andrew printed it–is he that clueless on hetero relationships that he couldn’t see what BS it was?
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Aw, babies! I feel like a proud mama!
@The Main Gauche of Mild Reason: Well, I had a conversation with a man (in real life) who felt similarly–that the societal roles placed on men are burdensome (they are) and that men don’t have the movement or resources women do (they don’t), but his solution was to whine about it and want women to help him. I told him to start his own movement. He said it might make people mad. Well, yeah. It will. That’s kinda the point. That’s where the advantaged thing comes in–he wanted women to help him with his issues with how society dictates men should be. Same with the guy in the letter. He has a legitimate complaint, but then his reaction is that all women are bitchez because they won’t date him. That’s where your privileged thinking comes into play. And, to be obvious, his one tiny point of credibility is pretty much negated by the rest of the letter.

Notice that he only mentions once, in passing, that the industry he’s in is entertainment. You know, the business where people are constantly networking to try and find jobs, and where “networking” usually includes dating and hook-ups.
He’s absolutely right that the beautiful women he wants to date are passing him up for more powerful men with more money. That’s because those are the men who can advance their acting careers. He’s basically bitching that he gave up love to advance his career, so they should be giving up their careers to be with him.
IOW, he’s even more of a whiner than he first sounds. “I thought I would go to Hollywood and have Zoe Saldana and Megan Fox fighting for my attentions, but it’s not like that at all! It’s all the fault of the feminists!”

Working on exactly the same girls, I had a decent level of success, not by being a jerk but simply by expressing interest, flirting, dancing. You know, things guys do when they want to get anywhere with a girl.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the so called “nice guys” are just too chicken shit to dance, afraid they’ll look stupid, or not cool or something.

I’ve been in LA for over 20 years (yikes!) and am an entertainment industry drone myself, so I know and loathe the type. They were the most brilliant guy in their small-town high school, and it’s a shock to their systems to get out here and discover that there are at least 1,000 people who are smarter and more talented than they are.
But they can’t accept that maybe they’re not quite as brilliant as they thought, so it’s all the fault of the feminists if Megan Fox isn’t stripping down on their doorstep after their first week on the job.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: It was more a lay-up than a long-shot three-pointer. In fact, I’m half-amazed no one beat me to the punch on that. I’m getting a reputation at work for sneaking out classic snark like that when no one is expecting it. I have to admit, being underestimated has its advantages.
@Mnemosyne: I do have a small confession to make: my impression of LA was dictated by the Great Orange Cloud (too long a story to fit into an edit) until I went to visit a friend in Long Beach and he introduced me to both Little Tokyo and the LA Farmer’s Market. I suddenly realized this place might just be livable. I’m still a Nor’westerner though.

@Mnemosyne:
The flip side of that, alas, is all the young women who come to Hollywood to make it in show business, find that they aren’t quite pretty enough or talented enough, and end up making another kind of films on the other side of the Sepulveda Pass.
MikeJ
@Amanda in the South Bay:

@burnspbesq: Yes, this is true, too. Life in Hollywood is not for the faint of heart.
The Main Gauche of Mild Reason
@MikeJ:
As a “nice guy” who suddenly just started thinking differently one day about a decade ago, I think it’s more grounded in misogyny and entitlement. You think you’re unworthy because of some sort of insecurity you have, and then because you’re a misogynist you want to blame women for your own problem. Women, of course, pick up on this and steer away. Then you interpret this to further your initial belief that “women are bitches”. It’s very circular (and screwed up) reasoning.
burnspbesq
@Yutsano:
Don’t underestimate the difficulty of a lay-up. Or did you not see the end of the Stanford – Xavier women’s game last night?
Mnemosyne

Very true. I bitch about wasting my two film degrees, but at least I am a respectable secretary at a large company and not stuck waiting tables or worse.

asiangrrlMN

MattR

Mnemosyne
@Yutsano:
It took me quite a while to learn to love LA. When it comes to high culture (museums, etc.) it can’t even touch Chicago. But once you really throw yourself into the melting pot and realize that you can literally find a neighborhood full of people from anyplace in the world somewhere in LA, it’s pretty cool. You can walk from two blocks full of Ethiopian restaurants and shops up to an entire neighborhood full of Orthodox Jews in about half an hour if you just head north on Fairfax Avenue.
The Main Gauche of Mild Reason
@MattR:
You also have to be a little bit of a jerk to begin with, I think; because it requires blaming others for your own problems. The main thing that snapped me out of it is that I just stopped blaming other people for my problems. While I think women can be weirded out a little by insecurity, I think most can tell the difference between harmless insecurity and insecurity with burning passive agressive rage.
Yutsano
@MattR: BJ mind melds occur more often than most folks will admit. I’ve had one with two attorneys on here: the good country tax lawyer and FH # 1 in Australia. It may be suggesting some sort of predestination that I’ve considered as a career but I might go in another direction. Plus I love both actresses.
@Mnemosyne: My personal opinion: every person who claims to be a student of history must go to Little Tokyo and see the Great Black Line. It was quite simply the most moving memorial I have ever seen of one of our country’s greatest sins. I literally teared up when I got to the end.

asiangrrlMN
@The Main Gauche of Mild Reason: The other thing I see with the ‘nice guy’ types is how petulant they become if they feel their efforts aren’t being appreciated enough. Which they can never be. And, I also think it’s because they are putting effort into being nice only to get laid (or a date), which is not nice in and of itself.
@Mnemosyne: That’s really fascinating. Do tell more.

Front page of tomorrow’s — okay, actually today’s — dammit, *Wednesday’s* NYT lead article says Obama is announcing major offshore drilling initiatives, or more accurately overturning the bans on offshore drilling. Atlantic, Gulf and Alaskan coasts all included. My kneejerk enviro response is that this is a Bad Thing, but I’m willing to be persuaded that enviro impact will be minimal and energy security enhanced. I suspect it will be challenged in the courts and take years to sort out, giving us that much more time to develop alternative energy sources (maybe that’s the 11-dimensional chess strategy?). But on its face, it’s rather distressing and making it hard to be the enthusiastic Obot I truly am. Whatever happens, the political fallout promises to be amusing.

Am I the only one that feels that “right to work” is one of the creepiest orwellian phrases ever? I remember the first time I looked it up to see what it meant I was really confused because the explanation had so little to do with the actual words.
MattR
@The Main Gauche of Mild Reason: Yeah, for the most part it has been how my insecurites affected my actions that did me in and not how women have reacted to the insecurities. But then again I don’t particularly care anymore since I have decided against marriage (or any type of permanent relationship) and children.

It’s bad, but isn’t the whole argument that the oil companies already control tons of sites in the US where they’re not drilling because it’s not worth building the infrastructure for the small amount of oil? Everything I’ve heard about the American coastline suggests the same thing. I have a feeling that, regardless of the policy, we’re not going to see a rash of offshore drilling anytime soon.
hamletta

MattR

You know how companies are always claiming that they moved out of California because the taxes were too high? It’s more because we still have some pretty strict employee rights laws, even though technically we are also a right-to-work state. I think we’re one of the few states in the country where you have to pay overtime for more than 8 hours of work in a day regardless of how many hours you work that week, so you can earn overtime even if you were only scheduled for 20 hours that week.
They tried to take that away at one point but the outcry was so huge that they brought it back almost immediately.
Mnemosyne
@SiubhanDuinne:
The only ray of hope I can offer you is that it seems that 9 times out of 10, “anonymous White House sources” are pushing a story that’s the opposite of what the president is actually planning to do in hopes of pulling him to their direction. Not saying that it’s not happening, but I, too, am willing to wait for the details of the actual announcement.
Yutsano
@The Main Gauche of Mild Reason: It does, although I can’t seem to find much reference to it on either Wikipedia page I think would mention it. I’ll keep digging for some more info on it.
Martin
@SiubhanDuinne: It’s a mixed bag. Looks like they’re canceling some drilling leases in Alaska and opening some that are >50 miles offshore on the east coast.
Part of the problem with increased drilling in Alaska was that a fair bit of that oil was exported. The drilling in Virginia is almost guaranteed to stay domestic. Less shipping usually leads to less environmental risk.
It’s not a great development, but if they’re going to try and maintain domestic production (more drilling is needed for that to happen) then it sounds like they’re going about it in a more responsible manner.

@soonergrunt: I try to overlook Elway’s misguided politics. Not easy, but the blinders fit me well.

As a foreign barbarian raised on a different form of football (no, not soccer) can anyone tell me what the hell the band was doing on the field during play, and why the band seemed to have more people in it than the crowd.

@yutsano,
nah, not a west coaster, just an east coaster who likes to point out that we aren’t biased, that would imply intent, we are just unimpressed.

@The Main Gauche of Mild Reason:
As another “nice guy” who thankfully managed to learn better before I turned into one of those sad resentful fuckers, I think the “nice guys” are the same as the jerks. Both objectify women; one group as below them, the other as above them, but they’re both wrong. Maybe if the guy treated the women he met as individual people, rather than viewing his inability to get laid as a symptom of post-millenial gender politics, he might be more willing to go out and meet new women, engage with them as people, and actually have relationships.
From the letter:
Official blame or not, the only person with responsibility for his situation is him. If he learns this, he’s taken the first step towards not being a jackass.
League or Union?
I mean, if laterals are what make an exciting game of football, why not play a game with nothing but…

I was there! It was my junior year and I was right in the middle of the student section — it was a crazy game and at that point we were settling down for *another* depressing loss.
It was impossible to clearly see what was going on in the field after the kickoff and the whole stadium was screaming anyway (and we were already bracing ourselves for the pain of watching the hated John Elway dance around with the Axe)
It is hard to convey our shock, immediately followed by joy when that cannon went off behind our shoulder — but my friends and I spent the next hour dancing on the field. The campus was crazy for the next 24 hours– even my roommates who did not care about football.
Almost as much fun was the Monday issue of the Daily Californian with Elway whining about how the Cal cheaters had ruined his last college game. All too perfect.
I had a great time showing the YouTube video to my teenagers a few years ago…. for once mom did “something” cool.
Thanks for reminding me of a great college weekend.

@slightly_peeved:
League. I played Union at school and that was enough to put me off it for life.
Go Eels! (Yes, somewhere there is a football team called the Eels).

@Viva BrisVegas:
I believe that would be the Parramatta Eels, yes?
Viva BrisVegas
@burnspbesq:
It would indeed.

I was at that game, too, also. I was living in N. Oakland at the time after graduating that spring from Berkeley and the wife and I scalped tickets and sat right behind the Stanfurd band. It was quite the spectacle and a very satisfying conclusion to Elway’s collegiate career, IMHO. The Play, like The Catch and The Flip, never grows old for me.

I hate fucking bootfall.

Christ, yes. My best friend was on Rally Committee (he was canoneer) and I got to see that freaking game and it was unbelievable
And the parties that night were equally so
In hindsight, it was probably the high point of my life, I wonder if that’s good or bad?
