Dad sends along this picture of Guesly, which I’m reasonably sure counts as cruelty to animals:
I’ve been told no humans or animals were hurt while making this.

Guesly probably didn’t see it coming. Where are his eyes?
jeffreyw
Ow! It hurts me, John.
Juror #7
There aren’t even words for how awesome that is.
Your dad is an evil mastermind, John.
Violet
So sweet it makes my teeth hurt. Aww…. Guesly doesn’t look too unhappy. I don’t think animal control will be out just yet.
GReynoldsCT00
it hurts to look at, poor doggie

I’m thinking cheese crust pizza! for later today. Remind me to post a pic this evening.

Do all Cole family dogs sit on the backs of sofas and chairs?
jeffreyw
Cherry blossoms. I thought the little info sheet on the sapling we planted 20 years ago said this was a Bing cherry, and that it was self pollinating. I’m starting to suspect it isn’t. I have seen a cherry on it before, once, I think.
RedKitten
Oh, that’s too cute.
And considering how incredibly pampered and cosseted that pooch appears to be, this is a small price for him to have to pay.
mistermix
How did he get that dog to sit still long enough to take the picture?
David in NY
@jeffreyw
You were misinformed. Bing cherries need a pollinator. Sour (pie) cherries (Montmorency, etc.) are the ones that don’t. http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/calif/msg06204141823.html

Acquaintance of mine is hawking this:
T-shirts and bumper stickers” saying “My hopey changey thing is bigger than your moany whiney thing.”

Is it just me or is the “reply” thingie missing? Anyhoo
“Do all Cole family dogs sit on the backs of sofas and chairs?”
My mom’s dog, Jennie, has decided she LOVES the back of chairs. All the better for trying to steal food and bark at the neighbors outside the window.

I’ve been told no humans or animals were physically hurt while making this.
Improved for accuracy.
p.a.
Well not physically, at least…

Comrade Mary
Your dad’s never forgiven the pups for that post-bath couch-rolling incident, right?
SiubhanDuinne
Your father is a cruel, cruel man. Poor, sweet little Guesly! What a tolerant pup. (BTW, how exactly do you pronounce “Guesly”? I think you told us once, but I forget. Where did the name come from?)
Scuffletuffle
I’ve got PETA on speed dial–they’re on their way to your Dad’s house now. What shade of blood red would he like splashed around?

Holy Moly, I just heard an NPR story where they actually pointed out that Republicans were actually filibustering unemployment benefits (they used the term “filibuster”), and they had Jon Kyl whining about how he wanted to pay for stuff. They followed up the Kyl comment with a statement by Saxby Chambliss talking about all the unpaid for earmarks he wants for his state, and how they are different because Republicans shouldn’t be expected to pay for stuff.

That poor, poor dog.
@Open Thread I’ve started commuting by bike again for the summer. Man, I am so disgustingly out of shape you’d think I’d ignored the treadmill and the trainer all winter…oh. Right. Never mind.
Karen
That poor dog’s pride was hurt. I think it may have been pay back for the bath, then couch rolling incident. (If I did that to my dog, she’d bite me)
jeffreyw
@David in NY: Not sure why I all of a sudden care about cherries, but thanks for the links. Mrs J has a mission now. Gonna have to surround it with deer fencing to keep the young bucks from buying t…er rubbing velvet from their antlers and ruining it.
Comrade Jake
Just saw on ESPN that Butler has a torn ACL. Terrible news.
Liz
aw. I can’t help but giggle at the little sunflower. :)

Farkin’ teabaggers are going to be in my town tomorrow. If I can find the energy after work, I may blog it for the GOS.
Comrade Mary
@debit: Oh, yeah, tell me about it. I did some winter commuting and indoor training this winter, but my first long ride this weekend was — interesting.

@jeffreyw:
Have had cherries on my mind after going to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs472.snc3/25897_1245007614255_1501328452_30614087_1077878_n.jpg Also, have been planning to plant a sour cherry one of these days (grew up with them in the back yard many years ago, clouds of white and great fragrance in the spring), but haven’t gotten around to it.
Mnemosyne
Ye-owch! I can unfortunately say from experience that a torn ACL hurts like hell. The surgery works really well and I’m assuming that Butler will be able to get a specialist and extensive PT, but having a pre-existing injury like that is not going to endear him to NBA scouts.
Mnemosyne
What the heck? Why am I in moderation? I didn’t even talk about footwear.
Mike E
For Easter dinner, I took IndyLib’s suggestion and tried Philippine chicken adobo–yummers, so easy. For the veggie I ‘burnt’ some butter and sauteed asparagus w/lemon juice.
Dog question–my daughter’s beagle was panting a lot last night at rest, is that some kinda warning sign?
My prez is tossing out the 1st pitch today–go Fightins!

I start my new job tomorrow and SamKitten starts daycare. Man, after not working since July, this is going to feel really weird.

Try that with Tunch. Go on, I dare ya.

Notice that there is not a matching photo of Ginny in a complementary get-up. That little girl has moxie and would not let them humiliate her like that!

@ Comrade Mary I managed 20 miles the other weekend and was just disgusted with myself afterward. This was a route I used to breeze through after work last summer; this ride nearly wiped me out. Why do I let myself go to pot every single winter?
The one bright spot is my bike. I took a Specialized Crossroads (early 2001 model) and slapped on drop bars, bar end shifters, new cranks, fenders and a rack and it is just a blast to ride.
Violet
SamKitten is the most adorable baby, EVAH! He really could have a career selling baby products – he’s so photogenic and beyond cute. That smile!
Dave Fud
Need to add “Bring on the Brawndo!” to the rotating tag lines for b-j.com!
Chat Noir
That sentence is full of win.
Edit: SamKitten cuteness is beyond cute. Good luck at your new job, RedKitten.
Keith G
@Redkitten…..Hmm….Aren’t we missing something? Isn’t there a Easter pic of young Samkitten in bunny ears? Or are Canadians too cool to celebrate the Day of the Rabbit in full costume?
Anyway good luck on a big day.

@Comrade Jake #25
That is terrible news but it makes more sense than a sprained knee. The way he reacted made me think all along that the knee was blown. You normally do not drag a foot the way he was dragging it if the knee is just sprained.
I will be pulling for Butler tonight and it is not because I am a Duke-hater. I just like the idea of a team like Butler winning it all.
It is like Radley Balko says
There is a lot of Cinderella shit to love but I would not take Butler and 15 points.
Chat Noir
Highly recommend “The Pacific” on HBO. I think it’s going to win a boat-load of Emmy Awards in the fall.
Sentient Puddle
I’m pulling for Butler tonight because if they win, my bracket of random coin flippage kicked the ass of all the rest of yours.
RedKitten
@Keith G: I tried. I had this adorable bunny hat with ears that my brother got for Sam. But it was way too small for him, sadly.
I hear thumping upstairs. It appears that my liege has woken up from his nap.
SiubhanDuinne
@Mnemosyne: You had the word that means “someone who specializes in something” and that word contains the dreaded boner pill. It aint just soshulizm any more.
ExtremismInTheDefenseOfLiberty
Mnemosyne, it is the word “speciaIist” that put you in moderation.
I am using the upper case i solution here to fool the filter.
suzanne
That Silly sunflower hat looks so adorable on that cutie patootie.
I’m a bit wistful, our Siberian Husky Keeta had to be put down last night. Only five years old. Not fair.
SiubhanDuinne
@EITDOL: Clever! And. So much more elegant than the speshulist spe. Cia. List runarounds.
abo gato
If I tried to put that on either of my Jack Russell’s, there’d be hell to pay for sure…..cannot see how in the world your dad got it on, had him sit still, and had time to shot a photo…..is the dog on drugs?
CaseyL
Adorable Guesly-as-sunflower, and he doesn’t really seem to mind, since his pose is (or at least looks) relaxed. Is he the April Flowers that March Showers bring?
“My hopey changey thing is bigger than your moany whiney thing” is good, but “whiney quitter” would have been better, though I realize it doesn’t scan as perfectly.
Today school starts. It’s gonna be a killer quarter, since I’m taking a full course load AND doing an internship on top of that. Pray for me :)
LuciaMia
Well, Mr. Cole, you certainly called this one…

suzanne:
I am sorry for your loss. Keeta was probably a very pretty baby. He will live on in your heart for a long time.

You are such a patient little beast! I hope you got a reward for all your trouble.

Good luck on your new job. Report back please. Hope your “missing Sam” thing isn’t too intense — it’s really hard at the beginning.
Samuel is a very cute kid. Whadda smile.

@flukebucket:
“There is a lot of Cinderella shit to love but I would not take Butler and 15 points.”
You are a wise person. Butler is very good, but we can guard them and it’s far from clear that they can guard us. I’m not predicting a beat-down of the magnitude that UNLV laid on us in 1990, but I think our walk-ons will get in the game at the end.
SiubhanDuinne
@Suzanne: I’m terribly sorry to hear that. What a hole they leave in our lives and hearts. White light to you both.
@RedKitten: Oof, that’s going to be a bit of a wrench — although I think you said a week or so ago that your new job is close enough to day care that you can run up and visit on breaks. Good luck in the new job and the family transition, and please tell us all about it. (P.S. Said it before, sayin’ it again: Sam is quite simply the most gorgeous baby I’ve ever seen, and that includes the Gerber baby. I love seeing new pix of him, and I hope you don’t get too busy to snap and post.)

That poor, poor puppy. V. cute.
We had a rockin’ 7.2 Easterquake yesterday – I live about 100 miles from the epicenter and it was pretty dramatic. Our house is right on the edge of the ocean and for a while there it felt like it might topple in. Our fridge rocked back and forth, books and speakers fell off shelves, plants tipped over and broke their pots and the lamps swayed and shimmied like Hula dancers. We sort of laughed at first and looked at each other in a kind of “Run? Don’t run?” mode and then ran outside. Others were out in the street yelling and screaming. Muy dramatico!
Aftershocks continued through the night and today we were woken up by the bed shaking and bouncing. I have been in a lot of small earthquakes but this is the biggest I have felt since the 70’s.
Exciting! Scary! Hope the earth settles down now.

Is that a jellybean sitting about 3 inches from Guesly’s left paw (his left, not ours)?

I’m up in Culver City and I felt it and I could hear stuff shaking, but nothing fell or was damaged. I was watching a DVD at the time and it wasn’t affected at all. I recognized it as a quake right away and I was surprised at how long it went on…as well as by how passively immobile I was about it…it just didn’t feel like it was going to build to a jolt…good thing it didn’t, because I probably would have been buried under a mountain of my own crap that I haven’t bothered to put away during Tax Season. Didn’t feel any of the aftershocks.

@Mike E
re: your beagie — if she is really just hanging out and is breathing quickly (tachypneia), then yes — take her to the vet. The differential diagnosis is wide, but you want to make sure that she doesn’t have a primary pulmonary process to start. Is she a bit chunky? We have a beagle and a beagle mix by the way. Best dogs ever, but boy such a food obsession.
Oh goodness, nice pic, John. I dare you to show Tunch, it would be fun to see him rolling around with cat laughter.

@Tax Analyst
I’m still feeling aftershocks today – they are in the 3.2 – 3.6 range when I check the USGS site. In my region (SD/Baja) they are showing 553 earthquakes on the map, the majority from last day/last hour. It’s gone up from 510 when I first checked it today.
Oops! Just got another 3.0 at 1:09pm. Yikes!
asiangrrlMN
Poor Guesley. I am not a dress your animal up kinda gal, but he looks really really cute. Try it with Tunchie!
RedKitten, get that boy in pictures! It’s gotta be hard the first time you separate from him.
suzanne, my deepest condolence to you and your loved ones on the loss of your beloved Keeta.
suzanne
@SiubhanDuinne, Linda Featheringill
Thanks.
It was weird. Keeta was always the strangest dog I ever had. Hated going for walks, didn’t “talk” the way all my other Huskies have done, not all that physically affectionate, etc. But just looking over at her and seeing her thump her tail against the floor in response was so comforting in its own way.
I miss my furball. (Though, I have to say, because she was a Husky, it’ll be a while before the furball is truly gone. *sigh*)
russell
Yeah, but can he sing “Watcher Of The Skies”?
