It’s 95 degrees and the humidity makes it hard to breathe it is so miserable. HAHAHA Al Gore is fat. Where are all the jokers who find it funny when it snows?
In other news, via Digby, some straight talk from the folks at Slate: “Breitbart lied about Shirley Sherrod. Now he’s lying about the NAACP.” That wasn’t so hard now folks, was it?
D-Chance.

Honestly though, how much notice does Slate get these days? Hell I didn’t even know they were still around until I saw Joan Walsh links posted around here. Get FOX to apologize for Breitbart being a lying POS then we’ll talk.
Oh and I live in the desert in Washington (yes it exists). It’s 90 degrees outside. 90. Normally it should be about 110. We should be in the Phoenix hot phase of summer by now. But Algore haz two houses!
Comrade Kevin
Decent article, though I’m not quite so charitable to accept that Breitbart made a “mistake” at any point.
The first comment is a good example of someone parroting Breitbart’s nonsense, too.
matoko_chan
Friedersdorf has an excellent piece at TAS.
but this comment from cw is stone brilliant.
As a Quellist, I believe every human has embedded demodynamic nanotech
……but how to switch it on?
I think the conservative base is simply going to have to get a tremendous asswhupping to switch on their nanotech. I am unsure if the asswhupping will be electoral…..but it could be an asswhupping via science.

I seem to remember an article mid week at Slate that compared Breitbart’s slandering of Sherrod to the slandering of the Tea Partiers by the NAACP. That article has now vanished.
I’d like to see all news organizations retain archives of everything published along with their retractions. Removing embarrassing and factually incorrect articles after the fact is plain Orwellian. I have little respect for that publication.

@Comrade Kevin: Could just be how I’m reading the article, but I interpreted the “mistake” usage as ironic as the article went on. It morphs from an “oopsie” to “that boy done fucked up!”

I caution you that this is some very hot stuff.

@Corner Stone: i care. so that is a false statement.
i thought that was a great post by Friedersdorf.
Doesn’t it show that at least SOME of the conservative intelligentsia are beginning to get the luck?
Corner Stone
@matoko_chan: I’m sorry. I meant no one cares that you now consider yourself a quellist, and they don’t care to see the same thing posted 3 dozen times where you declare yourself to be a quellist, along with that same blurb.
matoko_chan
@Corner Stone: well the point was that cw said nearly the same thing.
sry for interrupting your vital paen to hotsauce.

I like Quellberry pie. 94 here w/humidity to match.

@matoko_chan: Point being that’s at least the fourth time you’ve posted that same blurb. And IIRC no one has asked you about it.
OTOH, people here care about their hotsauce.

Breitbart’s a goddam filthy racist fraud.
There, that was easy too.
And Matoko_Chan… WTF? If I agree and say I’m a Quellist or cellist or whatever, can you send me some of whatever it is you’re smoking? Looks like it’s some righteous shit, whatever it is.

i think this blog is too old for me.

So sorry about the heat. I was at a relative’s funeral in central florida last week, and I nearly friggin’ died. The Pacific Northwest has its issues — what with the lack of life giving sun and all — but there are days I appreciate the fact that it sometimes doesn’t crack 80 in the summer.

F******ing hot here too. (Also, apocalyptic tornado warnings last night, with more thunderstorms predicted tonight. Sheesh.)
Theres a yellow zucchini waiting out in the garden, one of the first to harvest this season. Planning on stuffing it with tomato, romano cheese, panko crumbs and fresh basil.
But just can’t face going outside to cut it.

For crying out loud, did everyone take a hit from the bitch stick? Jesus.
@ thread: I harvested the first (and sadly only) ripe tomato from my garden this year. It was delicious. Now if the rest would just turn red, I’d be a happy camper.

@debit:
For a minute I thought you meant you had only one ripe tomato all year, and that’s all you were going to have. That would be so sad!

Some of the most unbearable summers I have ever spent in my life were on the East Coast. The humidity is what just kills you…there is nothing like taking a shower to get some relief, then when you step out you are covered in sweat within seconds, before you can even get any clothes on. Just unbelievably miserable.
Well, New Delhi in summer is pretty horrific, too. I spent a week there once basically going from the shower, dripping wet, to the bed to lie under a huge ceiling fan until I dried off then back to the shower. This is what I did during the daylight hours. At night it was delightful.
MattF
Credit where it’s due. Saletan had an ‘even-handed’ article earlier in the week, where successive passages criticized Breitbart and then criticized the NAACP. But that was then… now he flatly defends the NAACP and calls out Breitbart’s lies. I’m not going to speculate on whether this is hackery or a genuine re-thinking– but it’s a non-trivial change, and I’m in favor of it.

@licensed to kill time:
Oh, IDK, our summers here in Vegas suck too. Yes, low humidity(we whine when it hits 20%), but they last 6 months or so. Today it will be at least 112, with lows around 98. Been this way for at least two weeks. All the !@##$%^%&*! concrete walls around every lot just hold in the heat. This is why I have almost no tomatoes. Lots of leaves, no fruit. Suffocating hot nights.
And, yes, I grew up back east where there is lots of humidity to go with the heat & that bites, too. Always seems worse where you are, I guess.

@cckids:
I grew up in ABQ, and the summers there were pretty hot. I can remember as a kid walking on asphalt that was squishy from the heat and sidewalks that burned your feet. My sister came to visit me on the East Coast one summer, and as soon as she got off the plane she was gasping like a fish out of water claiming she couldn’t breathe for all the water in the air. I’ll always take the dry heat if I have a choice.
I was in Tucson for a couple of summers and basically lived in the swimming pool that luckily came with the house. I guess my idea is that it’s easier to escape the dry heat in some fashion than the wet swamp of humidity that lies like a soggy blanket over everything.

@Corner Stone:

@licensed to kill time: I was in the Cleveland/Akron area during the summer while going through drug/alcohol treatment at the VA in Brecksville – a woman’s program (terrific program, btw). I was sickly most of that first summer. Coming from the NorthWEST with summer heating up to the 95-105 degree range with 8-13% humidity – it’s was unbearable.
Even after 7 years there, I still couldn’t stand that I could take a shower & still feel …. damp.

@Corner Stone: You know what, you really are an obnoxious idiot and poor excuse for a commenter here. You blew up at Fred Fnord over a silly thing like a sig and now you’re ragging on matoko_chan for… what exactly? Posting something you don’t care for? Who the hell anointed you Lord High Arbiter of both style and content here.
IMNSHO you’ve been one of the most assholish people around here for some time, so you don’t have a whole lot of room to move in with that shtick. I don’t always agree mith matoko_chan’s musings, but given the choice of that or your blatherings, I’d give you a big shove with a nano-insulated stick. Fortunately, the wordsalad is ignorable most of the time. Why don’t you just concentrate on practicing insulting lines with Nick and eemom in some corner.

@licensed to kill time: Yes, you are right. I remember stepping outside & my glasses immediately fogging over. Its just that we’ve been here 15 years now, though, & every year the summer seems to get longer & hotter. We pray for just one cloudy day!!! Given up on wanting rain, just a few clouds to get away from the frikkin sun for a few hours.

@matoko_chan: FWIW, I think the point about revolutionaries just wanting to change the location of the accumulation of power, as opposed to reversing the dynamic, IS really insightful and important, even if I have no idea what the nanoblah blah blah was about. And like a lot of regular BJ readers, I don’t read every comment in every thread, so this is the first I’d heard of it. thanks.
LongHairedWeirdo
I’m running out of charity entirely. The more I think about this story, the more pissed off I get.
There’s a storyline building that she was explaining how she got over racism. Well, here’s the thing. When confronted with Mr. Spooner, her “racism” led to her finding him an attorney who should have fixed the foreclosure problem right up.
Later, when she realized that she couldn’t trust that lawyer, she felt ashamed of herself, because she realized that if she hadn’t followed up, Mr. Spooner would have lost his farm. She realized she could have just put it all out of her mind, and never would have known about the foreclosure.
And the end of the story is, she realized that she should not only have gotten Mr. Spooner “enough” help, she should have gone to the wall for him, just like she would have for anyone.
This is not a tale of redemption, where an awful sinner sees the light. This is a tale where someone determined to do good realizes she’s not doing enough good, and determines to do even more.
And *that* is who Mr. Breitbart has chosen to shit on.
But that’s okay, because the NAACP told the Tea Parties that they should make it clear that Tea Partiers hate racism.
bootsy
Maybe when a bunch of old inner-city black people die from the heat today, Saletan will have more proof for his ‘scientific racism.’
“Surely, they’re inferior… All they had to do was spend food stamps on air conditioning!”
Also: don’t forget that global warming is only a hoax because it affects poor people more than the rich. Like lack of gun control, the problems caused by “free trade”, corporate welfare, lack of birth control, and institutional racism. If it doesn’t affect the rich, it doesn’t exist.

@Nethead Jay:
Unfortunately, the lesson that the rightwing took from McCarthy is that you should never back down, never apologize, never exhibit shame or remorse.
Accordingly, Breitbart’s friends and enablers are busy manufacturing more shit to sling against Sherrod, the Democrats and Obama.
The other pundit shows may show some restraint, but I expect the Sunday Fox News to go all out, probably accusing Mrs Sherrod of being a stealth member of the Black Panthers.
matoko_chan
@Anne Laurie: soooo…..you are an old person too?
;)
the point i wanted to make, before CS got all crabby on me…..is there IS a wake up call coming down the pike, and that is going to be an opportunity to wake up cw’s drunken mob and/or switch on my quellist embedded nanotech.
The wake up call is coming in the form of a horrendous asswhupping at the polls courtesy of the demographic timer.
I’m not sure exactly when it will arrive, but at that point, the conservative base/drunken mob is going to have its collective noses rubbed in the fact that the Anger Whiggas (Beck, Breibart, Palin, Levin, Rush, etc.) have been lying to them.
There might even be white on white lynchings.
so fun.

Slate editor David Plotz on Friday’s Slate Daily Podcast (The Political Gabfest) opined that Brietfuck should not be maligned since he is just a merry prankster.
It made me consider (for a moment) joining Facebook just so I could whisper a few comments into Plotz ear (contact only through their page), but I saw that many others had already weighed in.

This. My son (17) has a friend, female, same age. Follows in her parent’s footsteps, also a R; albeit they are fairly sane, kind one. She is intelligent, funny, curious, thoughtful (I know, won’t be an R for long). This spring she was invited to speak at some Rep Women’s forum here in southern NV. She gave a great speech about energizing the youth vote, was charming, smart, etc. Answered more questions in 30 minutes than Sarah Palin has since she was named as VP candidate. The response from the R Women? One gushed to her how fab she was, smart, etc, etc. then said “You’ll make the perfect political SPOUSE”. I am not sh*tting. The girl was pissed, she’d be a candidate to fear, not the frikkin spouse!
THAT encapsulates why they will lose any young they attract, sooner or later, FOREVER. Dim bulbs.

You’re a proponent of the Bell Curve theory. There is no “IQ debate”.

say whaaa?
the “Bell Curve theory of IQ” is that intelligence measurements in a population conform to a normal or Gaussian distribution.
WTF are you talking about?

I believe one of the operative phrases cc used re: Vegas summers is they last 6 months, which I can attest living in the (Other) Valley in LA is very similar. It gets to the point where I’m in mid-November pleading with the Gods to blot out the sun, or at least throw a nice damp misty cloud up in the sky for once.
Having said that, the most miserable summer I’ve ever spent was in Atlanta in 1995–apparently one of the hottest on record.

@Comrade Kevin: When someone makes the same “mistake” over and over and over, you can say that that person is a mistake, rather than that he is “making” a mistake.
