Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Bark louder, little dog.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

    Packing, bleah. Right now, I’m living in what can best be described as an agglomeration of cardboard boxes inside what used to be a functional apartment. Moving day is Monday. Assuming I make it that far without accidentally stabbing myself with a boxcutter or something.

    The last combat troops have left Iraq, beating President Obama’s withdraw deadline by two weeks.

    This seems to be the last chapter…
    in the history of American involvement in Vietnam Iraq.
    It’s also been the largest single movement of people…
    in the history of America itself.
    Richard Engel, MSNBC News

    The Naderites/FBaggers were right – OBama is just like Bush.

    But it is too easy for me to understand.

    “Layer ingredients in a lightly oiled 13 X 9 dish, in order starting with the peaches.”

    How many layers?

    “Bake for about 40 minutes.”

    But I just talked to my aunt, and she said that he will be home in 2 WEEKS!!!! That’s how long it’s gonna be for “everything to be in order”. So I may have in fact been watching him in one of the vehicles driving over the border into Kuwait.

    Apparently the pine nut crop in China was really small, driving up prices. Possibly some flavor/taste problems with the Chinese pine nuts as well, thus making them undesirable and driving up prices of pine nuts not from China.

    @jl: Mrs J made it from a recipe TaMara linked to. I think the temp we used was 350, always a good choice for general baking. Cut a bunch of peaches up and line the bottom of a 13X9 pan, add 1/3 cup of sweetened water or use canned peaches including the syrup. Sprinkle on the cake mix right out of the box, dot with a stick of butter cut into 16 slices, sprinkle on the brown sugar, Mrs J used ~3/4 cup, then chop 3/4 cup of nuts and sprinkle them on. Pop it into the oven, watch it, the top will turn brown and it’ll get bubbly. There is some leeway, you don’t need to look for 30 minutes, then check every 5 or so

    first of all, the Todd said the WH ain’t making any statements, so why then did MSNBC call for Todd’s input??? Just to cover the “confusion”?

    Okay, here’s my question.

    A couple of days ago, Ed Rollins said Obama’s comments about the mosque were “probably the dumbest thing that any president has said or candidate has said since Michael Dukakis said it was okay to burn the flag. And it was very similar.”

    I remember the ’88 election very well. I remember Bush I got all smarmy about Dukakis and the Mass. flag salute question. I remember some wingnut suggested Kitty Dukakis had burned a flag back in the day, and he was laughed off the stage.

    But nothing about Dukakis saying it was okay to burn flags. Nothing on Google either.

    I think MSNBC is wondering why the WH isn’t breaking out the foam finger, and my suspicion is that the WH’s attitude is that you don’t celebrate the end of a travesty. But it seems like MSNBC is mostly just stroking their own bone here: “WH didn’t prepare a response to this because they didn’t realize we were the shit and could broadcast this live – fuck them underestimating our awesomeness.”

It was at that moment I realized in what utter contempt they held the voters.

    ya know it’s a meme, because jack cafferty on cnn had a whole question on whether or not the Obama admin or the Bush admin was better at messagaing.

    I’m not really listening to keith or chuck or Tweety, cause I already know what’s what with them. I’m listening to Richard Engel, and Rachel’s coverage, not tweety and keith’s enlightened “commentary”

    AFAIK, Vidalias are the only onions you can eat (willingly, cheerfully) raw like an apple. They are an amazing flavour and texture. Several years ago the state (GA) Agriculture Commissioner took a lot of growers, distributors, grocery stores and restaurants to court for improperly claiming their onions were Vidalias, when they weren’t. I think the legislature also passed various laws defining what is and is not a Vidalia onion.

    If you’ve gotta have Big Government ramming things down your throat, those rammed things might as well be tasty sweet Vidalias.

    I had no idea what the fuck Olbermann and Todd were implying. Everyone knows that there are supposed to be 50K remaining when it is no longer “combat.” Basically it sounded to me like DoD was saying, “Technically this is the last ‘intact brigade,’ but there are still two weeks remaining during which we’ll go from 56K to 50K.” DoD is wanting to be extra precise.

    Olbermann seemed to be fishing around to find something to bitch about, Todd tried to fend him off, and then Todd caved by saying something weird about how the administration probably didn’t realize that they had super-cool technology to broadcast it, even though the military has had people happily talking about the whole shebang all night.

    I told my wife that it was just like reading certain blogs where somebody comes up with some stupid word-parsing complaint, and then there’s just a sudden crazy dogpile where everyone thinks it’s the worst fuckup ever in the history of up-fucking, like HuffPo or Aravosis. G makes his dump cake with a mixture of canned pineapple and cherries in juice with yellow cake and butter sliced on top. I’ve mixed it up with other fruits and cakes, but that faux upside-down cake is the classic.

    For some reason, people at his office have become convinced that I’m the one who makes the cakes even though he’s been bringing them to that same office since before the two of us even met 10 years ago. But apparently exchanging wedding rings was supposed to make me take on all baking duties or something.

    (We split the kitchen duties — I cook, he bakes. It works out nicely. I think I’m getting him this book for Christmas.)

    @Little Boots:

    Non combat troops still there til when?

    End of 2011. Yes, I know we’ll have people bitching that we don’t really know if they’re going to leave on schedule, but the fact that the first 100,000 have left on schedule (many of them even ahead of schedule) would seem to indicate that the schedule is something that’s being taken seriously.

    @Mnemosyne: These sound rather close to a clafoutis, which is basically a French cross between a cake and a pudding. Really nummy stuff though.

    @Yutsano:

    It actually bakes up more like a cobbler or crumble, at least the way G makes it. You serve it with a spoon. And ice cream. :-)

    @General Stuck: Most definitely.
    @demo woman: Most definitely. But it was amazing to see the dumb complaint arising on the fly.

    @FlipYrWhig: Secret to a happy marriage? You could write a relationship book.

    @Yutsano: I think the secret is hers. I’m just a doofus who talks back to the TV a lot.

    @beltane:

    What’s up with the price of pine nuts? So much basil, so little money for pine nuts.

    Pistachios work pretty well as a substitute, to my undiscerning palate. I’ve been told walnuts are good, too.

    @Anne Laurie: Walnuts are not considered truly authentic if you’re looking to replicate an actual pesto genovese. But that’s boring, plus the flavor with walnuts (kicked up a little with a small shot of walnut oil) is nothing short of amazing. I’ve done both and could argue that they are both equally delicious, although walnuts are even better if you incorporate spinach in the pesto as well.

    Don’t do it! Season one is TERRIBLE. Just enjoy season two; it’s better in many respects, but also worse. I think the problem with season one is that those writers had better long-term plot plans for the characters but were actually bad at writing. The new crop are really good at writing fluff cop pr0n. The characters are more derivative and less interesting, but they are way better written and performed this season.

    Also, Tricia Helfer is not in season one. So, really, what was the point?
