Here’s a laugh for Monday morning, courtesy of one of Ahmadinejad’s advisors:
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you question the authenticity of the more than 250,000 documents?
Mashai: I don’t want to get into individual documents and their authenticity. But I have no doubt that a US government plan is behind this disclosure. When someone wants to suggest something, they include fake information with real information so as to create a certain impression. That’s why each country has to analyze the documents that relate to it, which is what our experts in Tehran are doing now.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: In other words, you do take the embassy reports very seriously.
Mashai: We are only examining them to figure out the Americans’ tricks.
It’s good to know that 11-dimensional chess is a global phenomenon.

It is amazing how a good conspiracy theory can bring diverse groups of people together. No less a diplomatic master mind than Scott Adams (Dilberts daddy) is also sure the cables were leaked on purpose. His is just an additional quadrant heard from as every creaky, dusty corner of the compass comes unglued.
Always look for the most convoluted, least likely explanation that fits your world view or advances your cause. That is the one that is most likely to be true . . . in your mind.

That’s some Leni Riefenstahl style propaganda right there!

I put this in the open thread, but I’m re-posting it because, hey, it’s relevant.
I think Cleek needs to add a wikileak quote into the amazing pie filter:
“If we expand the pie for the common interest, the pie will be larger and more delicious.”
Ija
Should we be flattered that Iran thinks our government is clever enough to pull off something like this? It’s always interesting when countries screw up not because they underestimated their enemies, but because they overestimated. You’d think they would have figured out by now we are too stupid and incompetent.
Ash Can
Hey, let Ahmadinejad et al. waste days and weeks poring through diplomatic documents. It’ll keep them busy and out of mischief.
(ETA: I am, of course, deliberately ignoring the possibility of the documents containing sensitive material regarding Iran that could set diplomatic operations back by years, because that would make me crazy.)
WarMunchkin
So they’re going to spend their precious time looking for stuff that isn’t there? Ha, that’s stupid, it’s not like anyone has done that before, in, say, the context of invading a country.
Bill E Pilgrim
Yeah those foreigners are completely crazy, they sometimes get this idea that the US government hides things and lies about them and so on, so in the end they don’t take anything at face value anymore.
What a bunch of wackos.
Put another way: Yeah that particular guy is pretty crazy but as the saying goes: just because you’re crazy doesn’t mean that people aren’t after you, especially those who probably are.
A lot of people around the world believe all sorts of pretty crazy conspiracy theories about the US. My question is, can you blame them?
Bill E Pilgrim
@WarMunchkin: Exactly.
jwb
@Alwhite: Actually, going after the authenticity and veracity of the information is a better way of discrediting Wikileaks than going after Assange.
MattF
Well, we already knew that they’re crazy. So, let’s see… Hillary is pulling Julian Assange’s strings, Obama is pulling Hillary’s strings, Soros is pulling Obama’s strings… But who is pulling Soros’ strings? Who? Who? Who?
Bill E Pilgrim
@MattF: It’s no use: It’s puppets all the way down.
David
Freepers and Gatewaypundit commenters seem to think the US government was behind the leak too.
Wikileak Truthers Unite!

Ahmadinejad, of course. Or more accurately, the Ayatollah. The circle is complete.
Carnacki
Afterall, the Iranians seeded information to get the Americans to oust Saddam and install an Iranian-friendly government for them so he must think our intelligence agencies are just as smart and capable as his. He’s mistaken of course.
Marc McKenzie
@4tehlulz: You know…

Nope, won’t go there. A lost cause, this soul is. Moving on to saner comments and pastures. Nothing to see here….
But it looks like someone needs a visit from the men in white coats ASAP (and a visit from the ADL won’t hurt either.)

Yea, America is the only country in the fucking world that doesn’t tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Get a clue.
BigHank53
Why, whatever could cause the Iranians to distrust America? It wouldn’t have anything to do with the events of 1954, would it?

Governments frequently arrange “leaks” to the general public whenever it suits their interests for this or that piece of information to be out in the open. It’s always been that way.
I doubt this is one of these times, though.

Even funnier, off to the side:
Pam Geller’s post on Breitbart’s site says the WikiLeaks leaks were orchestrated by Obama, Soros & Assange. The purpose? To bring down Hillary, who Obama sees as his primary challenger in 2012.
No matter Assange has called for the resignation of Obama & Hillary. No matter that Hillary has said repeatedly that she isn’t interested, that’s PG’s theory & she’s sticking to it. Can’t quite figure how Soros fits in…I guess he funds WikiLeaks. Anyway, “Assange is Obama’s man.”

Did you see commenter seebach’s link on an earlier thread?
So far, this is the leak that most concerns me.
It is the one that looks most like a real worry for US security.
I hope we don’t get many more like this.

@Bill E Pilgrim: Win.

It would make a nice spy thriller, though.

14 hours ago- 335 sites
18 hours ago- 208 sites
projecting a crude linear curve fit (not relly enough data points yet) wikileaks is adding approx 20 mirror sites per hour on average.
in one week wikileaks should add approx 3360 mirror sites. in one month 13440.
if the diplocables continue at 1 or 2 per hour it will take ~ 28 years to release them all.
Do the math.
i think in less than one year America will be come a police state rivalling China in information suppression.
matoko_chan
The link is good now Mistermix.
Cant stop the signal.

@THE:
That list was sillily described by the Times as a “target list for terror”. No it isn’t. It is a target list for war. If you want a target list for terror, go to say walmart.com and bring up the store locator. War is against the state, terror is against its citizens.
THE
That’s a fair comment Calouste.
It always annoys me when attacks on military installations are called terrorism. It is war.
Nethead Jay
@Woodrowfan: Dilbert fan here too and yes, Scott Adams has always been a bit out there. But it’s a mostly entertaining form of out there and sometimes he’s dead-on.
Nethead Jay
@Calouste: Not sure I’d use walmart.com, there are other “better” possibilities, but good point nevertheless. A quick perusal of the list doesn’t show me anything that differs a whole lot from what’s been discussed in security research circles for quite some time. To someone with an interest in such (like me) this isn’t secret. I understand worrying a bit but I don’t think we need to go all “we’re doomed” yet.
JasonF
11-dimensional chess? Please. This is standard “America is the great Satan” propaganda. Remember, one of the big substantive “reveals” of this batch of documents was that everyone (including, in particular, Arab Muslim states) hates Iran. From the perspective of the Iranian government, of course their official position is “America is telling lies about us again!” instead of “Gosh, everyone does hate us!” I have no doubt that they know better, but they are never going to admit it.
matoko_chan
@JasonF: the problem is that america is so FUCKING STUPID that “America is telling lies about us” ALWAYS WORKS.
check out the War on

THE
Relationships between Assange and my government are also deteriorating after the publication of that list of critical assets.
The list included some assets in Australia.
Calouste
@JasonF:
Note that it is mostly the governments of Arab states that hate Iran, not as much the population. And while there’s the usual regional rivalry and security concerns, it has also something to do with the fact that Iran, even though the state is as authoritarian as they are, is at least going through some of the motions of democracy and was of course founded by a popular uprising against a monarchy heavily supported by the USA. The mere continued survival of a state like that is an existential thread to the emirs and princes on the Arab peninsula.
Seebach
@THE: Why was America so stupid to put them on a list that any Pfc could access then?
BIG IMPORTANT LIST OF MOST IMPORTANT STUFF EVER (PS DON’T SHOW NOBODY)
THE
All true Seebach.
It should perhaps have been better classified at a higher level.
However Australian Attorney General Robert McClelland did say that Australian Federal Police were investigating some matters, even before the latest leak, so I don’t know what Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s comment was in relation to.
