Robert Klein? Holy frijoles. That’s from that HBO special… back when standup was king and Joe Piscopo was funny.

@Cris:
I like the song, though.

I like the expression on his face when he hears the backup singers.
However, this simpler piece by a young Hugh Laurie also captures a lot about our great nation.

Well I’m baking up a storm. The house smells like oranges as I make a Clementine Cake. Dark Chocolate Chip-Walnut cookies next. Still waiting for the snow. It was in the 60’s again here in Colorado.
Oops, the Department of Tourism in Colorado would like me to let you know that it is snowing up a storm in the mountains, so book your ski trips now and if the weather holds, come down to the front range and get a round of golf in, too.

@DougJ: I still approvingly quote portions of that Klein special — such as “I can’t stop my leg” or the untranslatable Yiddish punchline — but nobody other than my brother knows what I’m talking about.

Hey, my eldest was born in the Bronx!

@Cris: “I can’t stop my leg” is a family favorite.
Tristan becomes part of a comedy team.
It’s shaping up as a classic team, with big RJ the classic slow burn straight man and Tristan the manic goofball.

What’s going on chez moi? I’m so glad you asked!
1) I opened up a Holiday Marketplace on my blog, at which some of the fine and talented commenters from Balloon Juice and Ta-Nehisi Coates are flogging their fine and creative wares.
So far, these include (among other things): Laura W.‘s awesome artwork, a variety of books, photography, knitting patterns, and an appeal for unused yarn (really!). It’s a potpourri! Balloon Juicers with something to sell should come by and post a little something about it, and Balloon Juicers who want to purchase unusual and wonderful things should check out the options! No one will get rich, but perhaps some nice things will find their way into the hands of nice people.
2) My super-smart 6th boy discovered today that he got the best score at his school on a math test designed for gifted 7th and 8th graders, and I don’t usually boast about these things, but wheee! How fun!

Dana Milbank informs the teabaggers that they’ve been had.
Anyone want to lay odds that the teabaggers will listen?

@cleek: My cleaning lady found a Scrabble tile in my house, even though the only Scrabble we own is the travel version with the clip-in “tiles.”

That’s a great song.
Klein is also one hell of a singer, I’ve always been amazed. It’s funny to see him sing it, I’ve had it on a comedy collection CD I got years ago, and clearly it was meant as satire, but a mixture of that and just straight sentiment about where he’s from and a place he loves, and over the years I came to think of it more as the latter. So it’s odd to see him playing it so much for comedy, for me.

@Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther:
Aaand I’m an idiot and didn’t include the link. Lots of bolding! But no link.
Here’s the link to the HOLIDAY MARKETPLACE!

I had the pleasure of seeing Robert Klein headline at a small comedy club one mid-week night in the winter of 2000/2001. The best part of course was the unannounced appearance by Jerry Seinfeld. It was after the end of Seinfeld, the show, and he was getting back into the standup flow before doing his first special for HBO (or whoever it was). He did a Q&A after his set which would have been much cooler if I had come up with a witty question.

Are you talking about Cleek’s Fcebook ccount?
Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther
@SiubhanDuinne: What you did there. I see it. And it amuses me!

Still fighting the good fight in the lower level trenches. This guy promises a retraction in the morning, but this other lying radio host could use a few more emails.
It’s all lies about the Medal of Honor ceremony that just won’t die.
I’m not giving up on this.
Help set the record straight, if you can. If there is one thing I won’t take, it’s disrespecting both a Medal of Honor recipient and the president at the same time.
Idiot flame starter is here.

@Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther: Bananagrams! — aka, ‘Scrabble for the rest of us’. I never enjoyed Scrabble, too much emphasis on numbers, but I looove Bananagrams. Which really can be played, as they say, by people at all skill levels… younger kids get a tile advantage, and the hyperliterate can take extras, and it’s time-limited. So a group of varying skill points can play a game that’s equally exciting to everybody, and there’s no long periods where “the dummy” tries desperately to find something usable while “the expert” fidgets & sighs. It even makes a good solitaire game.

As a Bronx native, that made me smile. The best part is his shout-outs to different places in the borough, a nod that only Bronxites can really appreciate. And the Bronx really is beautiful this time of year. :)
