Well sorry, I’m violating your rule to beg John to ban that firebagging asshole WyldPirate.

I mean really, what will it take to ban him? Dennis’ post questioning the nature of anti-Obama rage on the left merits this?:

We are now into season #2 of “The Wire” on DVD. Enjoying it immensely although we need to read the episode synopsis on the HBO website after viewing since a lot of “insider” stuff doesn’t often come across in the dialogue. I had no idea that Dominic West is British. And Wendell Pierce is soooooooooooo good! I love his silky-smooth voice. The entire ensemble is brilliant.
@SiubhanDuinne: Saw it on Saturday and thought it was most excellent.

I’d like to give a Holiday unity shout out to America’s teachers, who are continually slandered by our leftist would be overlords. Regarding the recent PISA score releases MSNBC states:
‘Wake-up call’: U.S. students trail global leaders; Out of 34 countries assessed, U.S. ranked 14th in reading, 17th in science, 25th in math.
Horse crap MSNBC.
Educator-in-Chief Arne Duncan states:
“This is an absolute wake-up call for America. The results are extraordinarily challenging to us and we have to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more serious about investing in education.”
Blow yourself Arne, you stooge. If you think you can handle the Truth, read on.
When the government data is Logically filtered by a Heretic, certain Truths are revealed. We are able to view that American teachers in aggregate are second only to the teachers of one particular city (Shanghai) when it comes to educating Asian students (556 vs. 541; in contrast Japan scored 520); second only to Finland when it comes to educating White Students (536 vs. 525; in contrast Germany scored 497).
American teachers are unequaled when it comes to teaching Hispanics (466 vs Mexico’s 425) and blacks (441 vs we are not sure as metrics are never applied to African students in their home countries).
Well done American teachers. Enjoy your Christmas break, and your summer break, and your 2pm go-home time, and your generous pensions and health care plans. Feel free to tell Arne to pack sand.

NFL rant to follow: My San Diego Chargers have proven to be a classless organization. From an ownership that is more interested in profitting off a new stadium than winning, to a general manager more interested in winning battles of egos with agents than resolving player contract issues, to a coaching staff that refuses to hold players accountable, to players that can not wake up until they are well behind to teams they should easily beat, this has been an abysmal year.

I need absolution. That massive storm was supposed to go right through Cincinnati and went south at the last minute. The predictions for Christmas Eve went to near-apocalyptic up until Wednesday. I was buying grocery on Tuesday just to be sure I wouldn’t get caught in the mess. It snowed over the weekend here in my beloved Chicago which caused me to break out my winter boots and deal with one of the more annoying parts of the winter – having to stop and tie my shoe laces on the boots every two blocks. Its seems to be something with the cheap “waterproof” coating on boot laces. Double knots? Triple Knots? Makes no difference

I disagree. The Spanos family wants to win the big one because that is the only way they’ll get people of this flat broke city to vote for their stadium. Personally I get a little thrill every time the Chargers fall on their faces because I know a little bit of Alex Spanos dies with every loss.
KG
@danimal: you would think that owners of sports teams would have realized by now that if you win (and that’s a relative term for most teams) you’ll get whatever you want. The biggest indictment against the GM was the hiring of Norv Turner. 9 years as a head coach before coming to the Chargers and he had 3 winning seasons (his last year in Washington he was fired with a winning record, but I’m not counting that). What possibly makes someone think that’s a good choice for a team that was allegedly a championship contender?

Probably the one thing I love most about this blog is all the advertisements that come up. Every time a new one gets through my blocked-sites filter, I just find the URL it’s coming from and add that to my blocking list. B.J. gets all kinds of ads from obscure sites I’ve never heard of before. I saw two new ones just today.
Web surfing is just so much less stressful with all the ads blocked away.

@KG:
Actually teams don’t even need to win. Just claim poverty (is is nearly impossible to lose money year to year in the NFL) and leak that you might be willing to relocate the franchise to LA.
The NFL salary cap has been for well over a decade less than the amount of revenue each team receives from the national television rights. There is like 3M dollars more in the check that comes from the league than the maximum the league let’s a team pay its players. Which means that even if you max out your salary cap you have a 3M dollar cushion before you factor in radio, ticket sales, concessions, merchandising, parking, local radio etc.

@ChrisS: The Bills are threatening to move to LA? Los Angeles, the graveyard of football teams. Too good weather, too many other things to do with one’s time. In a way it’s like Vegas-even if gambling wasn’t an issue, how many people would leave other entertainment to go see a game?
It’s going from a place where it’s the top billing in town to a place that barely notices you are around. I mean, there’s a reason why the Los Angeles Raiders once again became the Oakland Raiders, why the Los Angeles Rams finally became the St. Louis Rams, and why no original franchise seems to be in the offing.
I think the shock of that kills teams. Unlike the Dodgers or the Lakers, where there are dozens of dates where one can attend a game, football requires a less casual approach to attendance and fandom. With only 7-8 or so home games, it’s not a matter of going inside on a bad day, or sitting outside in the sun on a sunny day in order to fill the time. It’s making a commitment on a particular date.

I work at a university and one of my students passed away tragically in April of ’09. About three months ago, I started getting e-mails from this student I advised – it was actually an old e-mail they had sent me about four months before they died, just a routine e-mail asking about something mundane.
I’ve gotten them over and over and over since – but the weird thing is that while they no longer come to my work e-mail or my personal e-mail (to which much of my work e-mail is forwarded) they still come to my blackberry.
I surmise that the young man had his own school mail forwarded to his gmail account (both e-mail addresses are in the string) and somehow it’s gotten caught in a loop of some kind.
It was really creepy at first, but now I just delete them.

Note to the animationally enthused: Saw Tangled. Very good. I’d have put it as a real work of art worthy of Pixar if it weren’t a Disney Princess Movie and thus the basic themes have been worked over with tire irons for almost exactly 20 years now. I can understand exactly why it was made. Pixar wanted the Princess Movies to go out on a high note – show ’em how it should have been done, end the franchise. Rapunzel was vivacious, complicated, and interesting. The comic relief blended with the story without interrupting the flow. The actual story itself subtleties and twists I didn’t expect, and I thought things like Mother Gothel not having any magic were a nice touch. Maximus, The World’s Most Relentlessly Competent Horse, was great as both an antagonist and an ally.

@Mnemosyne: And the college game is probably way cheaper than even the cheapest Pro seats needed in a major city like Los Angeles. I would guess even the cheapest season tickets would cost a lot of family yearly salaries by a multiple of 2, and regular tickets statospheric.
Pro Football thrives better in towns where it can at least occasionally take top billing-like DC, Buffalo, Houston, or even New York. The weather pretty much kills any other outdoor anything from time to time in these cities, and guarantees a pretty good tv audience on Sunday. I bet even in December there are plenty of things to do that don’t involve sitting around a radio or tv.
The city/taxpayers refusing to pay for building a stadium is doubtless an extra obstacle. It’s not as if LA has to worry about tourist downturn if the team threatens to move elsewhere, and there is a argument to be made: why is building a stadium more important than say expanding facilities for Hollywood? Hollywood brings in far more money, has deeper roots, and probably employs directly or indirectly far more people. So why build a stadium and not movie lots?

Sadly, the technology we have and its potential for abuse is far scarier than the ghosts. @licensed to kill time: I’ve routinely gotten the “hacked account” messages from people I haven’t e-mailed in a dog’s age. Those have a subject line of “hello” or something and then it’s an “online pharmacy” link or something like that.
This isn’t like that. This is an e-mail that the kid sent me two years ago asking about sideline passes to a ball game that he was trying to arrange, as he was one of the photographers for our yearbook (one of the organizations I advise.)
In other words, I can’t see how this could possibly help any hacker/spammer.
Creepy as it may be, open up the e-mail and see if it’s not an old one that you actually did receive from that person when they were living at some point.
licensed to kill time
@WaterGirl: I might do that if it continues, but so far it seems that just flagging the address as spam and deleting the email is working ( I got 2 emails from two old addys). My sense is that responding in any way (via forwarding or whatever) is risky so right into the old trash it goes.
It’s really more of an oddity than a problem.

@El Tiburon:
LOVED The Passage not for the vampires! In fact, I have been boycotting vampires (well, except for True Blood). Tired of the whole vampire fame-whore thing. Hated those Stephanie Meyer books with a passion. But will definitely check out Cronin’s other work.
A friend of mine went to the Iowa’s Writer’s Workshop summer program and Cronin was one of the instructors. My friend had never heard of him or The Passage. Cronin apparently said he wrote The Passage after his daughter asked him to write a book about a little girl who saves the world. Well … interesting way to go about it, eh?!
The only other book on your list I’ve read was The Road. That book totally traumatized me. I read it during the whole “hey let’s nuke Iran for shits and giggles” thing and I swear I just wanted to hide under my bed for 2 weeks.

That is sweet. A personal message from my dad I would treasure.
Actually, the day he died he sent me flowers with a sweet little note. He had a little NY apartment that I was borrowing with a friend for a weekend in the city. He sent me flowers to say have a fun weekend. I remember I called him to thank him. I’m forever grateful that my last conversation with him was a loving one, that we were happy and not arguing. It easily could have been the other kind of conversation, where I’m being a bratty kid and he’s just trying to watch out for me.
He was hit by a car later that day.

I love the vampires though, but not the Twilight version and other recent abominations. I must admit I watch True Blood, but that show is so stupid and ridiculous, but oh well.
Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” is a very scary vampire book and another favorite of mine. Robert McCammon, who wrote ‘Swan Song” has a very good vampire book as well: “They Thirst”.

In nonfiction, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is just as good as people say it is. I’m nervous about the HBO movie version because it could quite easily fall into the “nice white lady saves po’ black folks” trap that the book manages to avoid.
@Uloborus:
The death of the princess film at Disney has been greatly exaggerated. There was some panic on the corporate side when The Princess and the Frog flopped (relatively speaking), but I’m still convinced a huge part of the audience problem was that she was a black princess. The higher ups at the Animation Studio don’t want to kill all princess movies forever (Ed Catmull was misquoted) and Tangled has given them a leg to stand on with corporate.
You won’t see another one for at least four or five years, but I really don’t think that Tangled will be the end forever.

When you tie your laces, you probably tie the standard granny knot everyone was taught. It’s a crappy knot, but it’s easily fixed: when you do the first twist, instead of putting the left lace over the right put the right over the left instead. Then do the loop as you normally do. In other words, one of the twists should be left over right and the other should be right over left.
If you do tie a proper knot and your laces still come undone, then well, buy better laces.

NOT technically Obots vs. Firebaggers, (aka “joining a machloches”), although a response to a comment here in that line.
NYT today reports on HHS efforts to find more eligible children for Medicaid. We have a factoid that 10% of children are currently uninsured as opposed to 23% of nonelderly adults. To me this supported that DADT was a bigger progressive achievement than sick kids. The achievements of the health care bill will be measured by how it treats that 23% of nonelderly adults. Also, sick kids are not demonized and their inability to join the military is not code for lack of full participation in civic life and the many benefits that the military can give an eligible person. A core progressive principle should be keeping people in instead of leaving people out.
(Now, in terms of pure ethics sick kids are better because you could save a life. No one is questioning that.)

@Ailuridae: Tie a simple square knot in the laces, use a bow to take up excess lace–with another square knot in the loops perhaps. It can be pulled pretty tight but usually loosens with a tug on one of the laces.
[Via]
My emphasis-“potential instability” is how they say what it is about the knot that makes it so useful for tying shoe laces. Tug on the free end of one of the laces and the knot’s potential instability is made manifest. A simple overhand knot with the loops prevents the inadvertent pulling of one of the laces.

When can we finally say “Oh my God! You killed Kenny!”?
That’s the real question.
Tattoosydney
@Kenneth:
Oh, for the days when trolling actually meant something.
With the “turth” thing, you could have denied that you’d actually misspelled it. That would have got several people involved. If you’d denied it with a good line, it could have been the next “helicopters are not laughing”.
But no. One quip from licensed to kill time, a desultory back and forth with ABL (she gets points for “Keep telling yourself that, dearie.” however, which was really quite good), El Tiburon agreeing with it, and then, nothing.
Perfectly good material. Wasted.
Amateur.

But they do. Inferring from what I’ve been told (at my very small, cog in the corporate machine level, mind you), they want the Disney and Pixar studios to continue to have separate identities, and one of the ways to differentiate them is to keep the fairy tale/princess stories at Disney. It will probably take another little while to get corporate to settle down from their freakout, but it will happen.
