Yes, I read about that too. Sounded like he did a lot for vets over the years, especially Vietnam Vets with The Wall, and other outreach stuff, like jobs.
For former cadets like Tom Carhart, who earned two Purple Hearts there, the experience of Vietnam was disorienting. In 1969 he left the Army, briefly grew his hair long and joined the antiwar protest, only to realize, he says, that I didn’t want to turn my back on the young men who had died in my arms.” He was not the only ’66er to find civilian life difficult and baffling. Classmate Jack Wheeler, a second-generation West Pointer, went from Vietnam to a theological seminary and then on to law school, all the while looking for a way to reconcile his spiritual needs with his sense of duty. Still others chose life in uniform. Col. George Crocker delivered 23 years of distinguished service around the world.

You know the story and you know the names: states like Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and California are supposed to be in huge financial trouble thanks to bloated governments, business-unfriendly regulations, and strong public sector unions… But there’s one state, which is fairly high up on the list of troubled states that nobody is talking about, and there’s a reason for it. The state is Texas.

I should have watched this game, but it’s over. Stanford does not get to play in a BCS bowl every day.
The fans were right to be concerned that the Rams have the brightest future in the division because they have a franchise quarterback in Sam Bradford who needs only a few receivers to get the offense moving. And the Rams have key young players on defense and a superb coach.
@Yutsano: I think the Incomparables make it a point of pride to be that way.
@asiangrrlMN: As Yutsano says, that’s the unofficial fight song for Stanford (and every alum feels their alma mater pride start to swell every time they hear it get played….which is the point, I think…).

(CNN) — The thousands of birds that fell from the sky just before midnight New Year’s Eve in Arkansas likely died from massive trauma, according to a preliminary report released Monday.
The birds, most of which were dead when they were found, were red-winged blackbirds and starlings. They were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said.
Lightening is the prime suspect, but it is very odd behavior for so many birds to be flying at night. I think the authorities need to question Obama, as it is just the type of diabolical thing he is infamous for.

Stanford’s charts are still kick-ass. Sometimes it takes awhile for thing to percolate down from the HBCUs, which is where a lot of the best modern arrangements come from.
@asiangrrlMN: If I have to be on the phone I’ll suggest a half day tomorrow if I’m not feeling better. If it weren’t for that damn meeting I wouldn’t bother.
After over 7 years of effort to improve the riparian and wetlands habitat around our local creek, and 5 years of salmon egg boxes, watching and tending and witnessing thousands of baby chum slamon hatching and heading out to sea, we got our first 6-7 spawning adults back to our creek to complete the cycle of life – hopefully laying their eggs, and passing on their life force.
I am beside myself with joy and gratitude. Seven fish. Out of hundreds of thousands that we incubated and hatched..
No matter. Such is the return on investment for the precious things that matter. Please join me in celebrating the few, but the important… to their hoped for descendants in a stream and wetlands system that was degraded but that is being slowly and lovingly restored to support their descendants and our wild heritage…
@Yutsano: Nah. Just a matter of appropriate justice (though I’m kinder; I’ll settle for a bad game and beaten by the Quack Attack until he’s black and blue).
I am beside myself with joy and gratitude. Seven fish. Out of hundreds of thousands that we incubated and hatched..
Actually for a salmon run that’s damn good. If you consider how few adults actually make it to the final spawning ground, it’s amazing how the salmon manages to survive as a species at all. There have been documented occasions where one male and one female make it back. Fortunately they make thousands of babies in that two final weeks of their lives.
@gwangung: I’d settle for him getting his Heisman revoked also. And I bet more shady dealings come down the pike here soon. Anyone wanna bet that he HASN’T been contacted by an NFL team yet?
You are right — the salmon, a very resilient species, can limp along for a while with one or two fish returning. But they need the genetic diversity and the numbers to survive for sure..
Yes, I admire their strength and persistence. I recommend to all to go see them return in Alaska or Canada where their numbers are high enough to appreciate their dogedness and persistence — swimming on against predators and hurling themselves up waterfalls and on rocks. Its electrifying…
But we need numbers. The habitat that they are a part of, including us, needs them. Their decaying bodies after spawning feed the bugs in the streams and a number of other animals in the food chain from eagles to otters, racoons and ultimately, their own babies who consume the bugs that in turn consumed them.
No preaching — gonna celebrate!
82.
Yutsano
@Elie: The decaying bodies part is a huge point. It’s all part of the chain of biodiversity that we are barely just beginning to understand. We have the power to move the earth, and if we are lucky the restrain to not do so. The salmon have as much right to the river as we do. Probably even more so, since they’ve been there longer. It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing proposition.
As I said, the poetry of it is as important as the science and biology…
In the Northwest and in Canada and Alaska, you can still find a small stream to wander up in the late summer and fall, and quietly see Chinook and Coho make their way up, quietly resting in pools in between their struggles upstream.
The water is frequenly clear, and rushing over rocks and their coloring sometimes obscures them. Its like finding gold to me… sometimes you are really given a gift if there are enough of them to see the males fighting over the females and the females making their nests and then staying close by after laying their eggs and having the males fertilize them…
BTW — salmon and trout are in the same family and many trout have sea runs or the ability to migrate out to sea then return to spawn. They (salmonids) all like clean, cold water and lots of bugs or small fish…
84.
Yutsano
@Elie: The salmon are both a part of nature and a part of our history. The Salish lived and died by the salmon runs, so they did their best to protect them. I think one of the reasons why the Tulalip reservation is where it is is because they insisted upon being as close to the runs as possible. (Of course their income is mostly getting white men money now, and they do that quite well, but I digress.) And even when the white settlers came (and along with them large Asian populations, including Japanese who knew fishing well) they also subsisted on the salmon runs. We did almost drive them to extinction here before we woke up and realized what the hell we were doing. A huge amount of work remains, but great things can start with seven fish. :)
@asiangrrlMN: She’s starting to get over being people-shy too, which is good. Next step is to address her naughty bit issue, then I think she’ll settle down a lot.

@Yutsano:

@Lysana: I saw that website posted on an FB friend’s wall, and I literally laughed until I cried. That’s some funny shit right there.
ETA: The reason is because my FB friend was cursing Steve Jobs. Apparently, “hell” auto-corrects into “he’ll”.

@asiangrrlMN: AUTOCORRECT RUINED CHRISTMAS!!
(And FYWP ruined this comment twice already.)
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: WP hates you AND Christmas!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: WP hates us all. It’s just varying degrees of that hatred.
And just because you can’t get enough of her, Lexie explores new levels of teh cute. And no I didn’t turn the water on.

@Yutsano: SQUEEEEEEEEEEE! She’s sooooo adorable!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: She’s starting to get over being people-shy too, which is good. Next step is to address her naughty bit issue, then I think she’ll settle down a lot.
