Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’re not going back!

Bark louder, little dog.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

No one could have predicted…

This fight is for everything.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

This really is a full service blog.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

The revolution will be supervised.

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Second rate reporter says what?

@handy: Radically centrist. I think it’s in relation to how AL has the YouTube imbed oriented. Or something. Am I wrong if I kinda like it?

Yea, aside from this open thread, absolutely everything is center justified in the central pane. Not that i’m against the centrist leaning, its just odd that it changed randomly.

Minus something really odd, I don’t think the youtube centering in one thread should affect every other thread. But given its everything other than this thread you could be right Yutsano.

Looks the same to me; how come I don’t get the cool centrist effect? I feel slighted.

Yutsano, saw your prediction on a brokered convention this morning; I’m fairly sure that the run on popcorn would overwhelm the supplies. Only question is, someone is going to come out of the primaries with enough delegates, even without winner take all, I’d imagine; how would they get released to be brokered?

Well, I was kinda trapped because Keaton decided to fall asleep on my hand, but Charlotte just plopped herself on top of him to demand a bath, so I may finally be free to go to bed.

I don’t have any unusual centrism, but I’m using Safari at the moment.

@The Dangerman: What browser are you using? FF 4 here.

It really depends on how bound the delegates are to vote for their pledged candidate. Since the Republicans are fairly new to the game of proportionally dividing their votes, it could get rather interesting to see who will end up with what where. I’m not certain what the exact rules are in those situations, and it wouldn’t shock me if they didn’t think of that yet either. They’re still looking for their Great White Hope.

EDIT: and I LURVE that screen behind Takei!

FF4 was hanging too often for me, so I’m back to the last of the FF3’s.

At this point, it’s looking like it will come down to Romney or Pawlenty; I could see Romney leading to some sort of floor fight, which might trigger something like a brokered convention. Pawlenty, I think, would just be allowed to go take one for the team. Some folks see Bachmann as the VP slot, which is interesting, but my guess (pulled entirely out of my ass as midnight approaches) is that the VP slot will be someone being groomed for 2016. I’m thinking Huntsman.

If you haven’t seen it, Takei has a very funny Twitter feed. A couple of gems just from today:

A homophobe is like someone who farts in public, shouting to distract from what his own ass probably just did. #HypocrASSy

Today’s Rapture postponed as Jesus awaits announcement of surprise guest on final Oprah. Savior “hopeful” but “okay with it” if not picked.

@The Dangerman: I still say Huntsman will have too much splainin’ to do, especially if the Democratic nominee uses Obama as a campaign tool. Willard will be too old but I bet still foolish enough to try. Otherwise their only real option come 2016 is either Jeb or a current governor, and right now none of them are smelling like roses.

As far as the convention goes, buckle up. I bet it gets wild.

@Anne Laurie: Yep it’s back to normal. I bet it’s a thang between FF4, WP, and YouTube. Since it’s our favorite whipping boy, I say FYWP.

    @Yutsano:

I still say Huntsman will have too much splainin’ to do, especially if the Democratic nominee uses Obama as a campaign tool.

Perhaps, but I’m thinking the Money will predict that, by 2016, the Republicans will have to ditch their hard right strategy and head back towards the center. So, I’m thinking Obama for Huntsman = feature. Now, I suppose the Money might put a teabagger up for VP so that the epic loss becomes an EPIC LOSS, thus giving a boost to the move to the center.

  18. 18.

    Yutsano

    May 23, 2011 at 3:19 am

@The Dangerman: The beauty of this is Obama is useful even if they do start moving back to the center. Then Obama simply mentions Huntsman quit on him only two years into a four year commitment…for no real reason at all. I don’t doubt the Prez when it comes to bare knuckle politics, and I pity anyone who underestimates him in that regard.

Also: the crazy is gonna take awhile to wash out. It might dispel some as soon as THAT ONE is out of the White House, but I wouldn’t place any bets on that.

The whole notion of prohibiting mention of gay/homosexually appears to come from a long line descending from the notion of demonic possession.

In olden times all illnesses or bad luck was caused by demons (or being cursed which could be analyzed as recruiting a demon as a causative agent).

More modern science developed the germ theory of disease where at least some illnesses could be explained with infectious microbes – a move that finally put a face on some demons but pretty much retained the demon theory.

More modern is the notion of “memes” which are a mental analog of genes with conceptual units such as “heliocentrism” or “biological evolution” which can be seen as demons which infect peoples’ minds.

The Tennessee effort might be seen as an effort to combat infectious memes (as if hearing about “gay” will make someone gay unless the person was closeted) but much of the conceptual framework is still about demonology. There are still Christian sects that pray over oil to give it holy power and then use the oil to anoint objects to drive away any demons that might have accumulated there, such as office furniture that a suspected gay person might have touched.

For y’all running FF4 (I am), I’d recommend going to about:config in your URL bar and disabling WebGL for now – security flaw uncovered last Tuesday. Not a huge deal, no exploits have been reported yet, but it’s conceivable that you could be subject to a DOS on your box or a BSoD. They’re working on it, but until Khronos gets out WebGL 1.0+n, probably best to disable it for now.

Seriously doubt it, unless you spend a lot of time at GoogleLabs or other web-research-oriented sites.

WebGL 1.0 just went live a couple weeks ago, deployment’s nowhere near widespread. You can find content, but you’d have to be looking pretty hard to find it.

Just better to be safe than sorry for now.

Suicide is never funny, but sometimes it’s ironic.

The man who composed the pop hit “You Light Up My Life” ended his own life Sunday, New York police said.

Joseph Brooks, 73, was facing charges on 11 alleged rapes and sex assaults, New York Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said.

The Brooks’ were quite the family. According to the same article:

Brooks’ son, Nicholas Brooks, was charged in January with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
The bruised body of swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay, 33, was found at a chic New York hotel last December, police said.
