Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You cannot shame the shameless.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

The words do not have to be perfect.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Fight them, without becoming them!

In my day, never was longer.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Consistently wrong since 2002

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

How stupid are these people?

Song of the week

Trying to make it a fun Thursday evening with an early Song of the Week.

——————-

Barbara Lewis, “Baby, I’m Yours” (1965)
Written by Van McCoy. Barbara Lewis was a singer who first caught on around Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the early ’60s. Her first and biggest hit she wrote herself, “Hello Stranger,” but I couldn’t find a YouTube version any better than the one below. (Here’s a Grooveshark version from Bob Dylan’s XM show with somewhat better sound.) I think this might be my favorite anyway, because I actually remember hearing it on the radio. It’s really a sweet one. She had two more hits, “Make Me Your Baby” and “Make Me Belong to You.” There might be a kind of story in them if you get the right order.

Big hit: “Hello Stranger”

Who’s crazier? The vast mass of Republican crazies competing for the presidential nomination by reflecting the crazy of the Teahadi crazies? Or Jon Huntsman, for thinking he can pull the GOP from the brink of the crazy by appealing to, of all things, sanity:

To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy.

ETA: Love Barbara Lewis’s performance in the embedded song, DougJ.

I loved this song. I remember hearing it on radio, too.

“I’ll be yours until 2 and 2 is 3”. Well, it was a long relationship, which must have met its end in about, what? 2000?

@JGabriel: Huntsman crazier than that quote sounds. He believes in the scientific evidence of global warming, but he still doesn’t think we should do anything about it.

Also, Bert Berns produced this one. (Them’s producer – also wrote “Here Comes The Night”)

I heard that Crystals song “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)” on the radio this morning. Appalling. I’d never heard it before. It was one of those early Carole King/Gerry Goffin songs, produced by Phil Spector. I detected no irony or satire in the production … I’d love someone to ask Carole King about that song. I read that biography “Girls Like Us” and I don’t recall it coming up.

Jon Huntsman, for thinking he can pull the GOP from the brink of the crazy

If a Republican is elected over Obama, one of his first acts, after taking office, will be declaring Jon Huntsman an enemy combatant and shipping his sorry ass to Gitmo.

[Humtsman] believes in the scientific evidence of global warming, but he still doesn’t think we should do anything about it.

Even so, I still don’t know whether to praise Huntsman for facing the slings and arrows of outrageous batshittery, or to laugh ironically at his Quixotic attempt to take arms against a sea of fundies, and by opposing, end their influence.

So the goddamned hard-wired smoke detector the damn gummint made us install in our garage is beeping for no discernible reason. I tried spraying dust-off all around it to see if some dust got into it but no luck. It’s driving me nuts because my office is right above our garage.

    Doug,

So I mentioned on the other thread, that I was kinda looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep’s take on Margaret Thatcher. Here is a teaser trailer, with a small bit of Streep’s “Iron Lady”

    The Iron Lady Teaser Trailer

    Hmmm, what do ya’ll think?

I made a comment to some people a while ago, that Meryl Streep could play Michelle Obama in a movie version of the Obama campaign, and totally rock it.

Damn, is there an accent that Streep can’t do? Between her and Cate Blanchett, my head is spinning over the number of different accents they’ve both done in movies.

    Hmmm, what do ya’ll think?

I’m waiting to see whether they’ve come to praise Thatcher, or stab every aspect of her reputation with a million truth-exposing daggers.

I’m hoping for the latter, but expecting the former. Though Streep is certainly no wingnut.

Well, everyone waxing nostalgic about Thatcher might be interested in this Guardian piece about Murdoch, specifically this bit buried at the end of the article:

This is from the entry for February 14 1996:
    __
Bernard [Donoughue, a Labour peer who became a minister in the Blair government] alleged, citing a Tory source, that Thatcher had sent a draft of the 1990 Broadcasting Bill to Murdoch’s lawyers and allowed them to make deletions as they saw fit.
