Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Jesus watching the most hateful people claiming to be his followers

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Come on, man.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

In after Baud. Damn.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Some Thoughts on the Final Transfers and Some Football Miscellany

by Randinho|  February 3, 201111:34 pm| 58 Comments

This post is in: Sports

Is Andy Carroll worth 35 million English pounds?  I’ll go out on a limb and make this prediction: assuming he stays healthy, Andy Carroll will have a greater impact for Liverpool than Fernando Torres will for Chelsea. I also think he’ll pair well with Luis Suarez.

The good news for Newcastle United, Carroll’s old team is that they have 35 million pounds to spend on transfers. The bad news is that they can’t do it until the end of the current season.

As for Torres, while Chelsea may be a good fit for him, they still need to shore up their defense. David Luiz is a good start, but John Terry’s form recently should have Ancelloti worried. Nicholas Anelka is now the odd man out among the strikers, but linking his name to a move to the MLS’s New York Red Bulls is a surprise.

As an Arsenal fan, their recent record still surprises me, but they have managed to hang on to second place and, while I’m not optimistic about them going to the championship game of the FA Cup, winning the league or upsetting Barcelona in the Champion’s League, the Carling Cup is their’s to lose against Birmingham City. Thomas Vermaelen, please get well soon. Samir Nasri, too.

Clint Dempsey is Fulham’s leading scorer and has scored as many goals in all competitions thus far as he did last season – and this season Fulhams did not qualify for Europa League competition.

For a guy who is often injured and goes to ground pretty easily, Arjen Robben should probably think twice before getting physical with his teammates. He does have a point regarding Muller, but there should be a better way to handle this.

Schadenfreude for this Barcelona fan? You betcha!

When art terrifies cowards…

by Dennis G.|  February 3, 201110:39 pm| 122 Comments

This post is in: Fables Of The Reconstruction

Via TNC comes the story of a painting so offensive to some folks that a campaign of intimidation was launched to censor the work and remove it from public view.

Here is the painting that offended the fragile sense of self-identity of the cowards who demanded its removal:

Heritage_StanleyBermdez

It is IMHO, a very accurate representation of the Rebel Flag and everything it has come to represent in its almost 150 years as a symbol of treason and terror. It is Confederate History Month distilled to a powerful image.

It was created by Stanley Bermudez, an art professor at Gainesville State College in Georgia. It was part of a faculty exhibit, but a campaign of intimidation (an echo of the images in the work) succeeded in getting the painting censored and removed.

The local paper tells the story:

“This is very much what I feel and think about when I see that flag. It’s just my personal feelings about it. It’s an accumulation of the things I’ve seen, studied and read over the years,” Bermudez said.

“When visiting the KKK website, the (Confederate) flag is used often. Recently, the KKK has had public meetings near (my home), which scares me because of their anti-Latino immigration sentiments.

Although the finished piece is how Bermudez sees the flag, not everyone agrees with his views. Public response to the piece was so strong that Gainesville State’s administration asked that the picture be removed from the faculty showing in the Roy C. Moore Art Gallery on the college’s Oakwood campus, Bermudez says. [snip]

The college declined to share with The Times any of the feedback that prompted the removal of the painting; however, at least one “Southern heritage” website described the painting as “despicable” and prompted visitors to contact Martha Nesbitt, the college’s president, about the picture. Site administrators even posted her e-mail address and telephone number.

In the article Bermudez comes across as a man of great grace and integrity. His students are lucky to have him as a teacher. It is a shame that a group of neo-Confederate thugs could have the art removed because hurt their delicate feelings, tweaked their fragile egos and intruded on their desire for a historical narrative free from the inconvenience of facts, reason, integrity and honesty. And yet, their response is also a fitting tribute to the power of Bermudez’s art. Their auto-response of hate, ignorance and intimidation is what the Confederacy was and is all about–and their reaction is just another iteration of the Confederacy depicted in the painting.

Their fear of the painting and their reaction to it speaks to its power of art and how art always terrifies cowards.

Cheers

From our Food Goddess, TaMara:

Tonight is all about comfort foods. Most of us are in the midst of a cold snap (and those of you who aren’t, don’t gloat, lest we descend upon you and stay until late spring) and the only way to get through it is to hunker down with some hot soup, buttery biscuits and finish with some melt-in-your mouth cake warm from the oven. This is my go-to potato soup, over the traditional cream of potato soup; I like the spiciness and the sautéed onions add a deep, rich flavor. The garlic biscuits are a nice complement to the soup. I was going to find a healthy dessert for tonight, but then thought to heck with it, it’s cold, it’s icy and we need chocolate. Rich, gooey, chocolaty goodness.

On the board tonight:

Next virtual meeting of the Balloon Juice Book Group is Monday evening, February 7, 9pm EST, because a bunch of participants (including Rick Perlstein) are going to be busy watching the Superbowl on Sunday afternoon.

We’ve only up to the third chapter (“The Stench”), so it’s not too late to download the enchanced e-book edition and join the discussion. Lurkers always welcome!

I’ve been doing my best to avoid talking about the Steelers and the Super Bowl, but my friend sent me this link of the best Super Bowl ad that will show this week-end:

It’s pretty cute.

Young and beautiful, someday your looks will be gone

Matt Yglesais on why Thune should run now:

The only thing we really know about John Thune’s prospects in 2012 is that for semi-mysterious reasons he’s currently considered a more plausible candidate than Jon Kyl or Jim Risch or Roger Wicker or John Barrasso or Mike Johanns or any number of other unremarkable conventional conservative Republicans. Will this still be true in 2016?

The reason isn’t semi-mysterious, it’s clearly Thune’s sun-chapped prairie good looks. This is all the more reason for Thune to run now, by 2016 some younger barefoot boy with cheek of tan might catch Bobo’s eye.

Sometimes I wonder if Bill O’Reilly isn’t just screwing with us.

Jack Stuef summarizes:

For anyone who believes that in a giant sprawling universe, there’s a pretty good chance intelligent life will randomly come together somewhere, please read the following lines of text:
