Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

People are complicated. Love is not.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

“Alexa, change the president.”

“We Start With The Side of A Cow” — Or How To Fill In The Hours Until John Can Usefully Post an NFL Thread…

by Tom Levenson|  January 1, 20114:34 pm| 49 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Sports

Check out this video from Wilson on the making of NFL game footballs. (Scroll down to the bottom of the column, as my attempt to link direct to the video failed abjectly.  My link-fu is exceptionally weak.)

Y’all may have noted that compared to JC, I’m actually good at this going Galt business. School starts again on Monday, (for my 10 y.o., not me) which ought to improve my posting performance, but I thought this little bit might amuse.

Most impressive to me:  these are old fashioned skilled craft jobs on display.  Shortest work stint featured at the Ohio factory in which Wilson makes its NFL-acceptable footballs was 28 years.  And check out Emmit at 2:17.  There is a man who works hard for the money.  He’s been doing it for 35  years.  I’d give myself ten minutes, fifteen tops, before screaming “Uncle!”

I guess this is an open thread, though mostly it’s just an excuse to start with the side of a cow.

Since I shit the bed with the NFL thread, now that I am aware that it is Saturday, I better throw up the appropriate thread for you all before the bitching becomes intolerable.

Where Did They Go?

by John Cole|  January 1, 20111:33 pm| 314 Comments

This post is in: Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

One of the weird things about blogs is how you get used to commenters being around, and then, a couple months later, you notice they aren’t around anymore.

Sometimes people send you letters telling you “You suck because you said XXX and I am done with you, you filthy GOP/Democratic shill” and you say “Ok, then!” and move on with your life. But other times, they just slide away. Maybe they got a new job or relationship and don’t have the time, maybe they finally got fed up with me and the others, maybe they are just lurking, or maybe they died. It’s just interesting to contemplate all the things that could happen.

At any rate, can you think of any commenters who used to be here, but who no longer are? Are you one of those people who used to comment a great deal but quit?

Hope everyone is feeling chipper this morning after last night’s festivities. Had some coffee my sister brought back from Mexico (Molote Simany?), and my GOD, I have no idea why they produce cocaine in Latin America. Just drink this stuff. I swear they most roast the beans with uranium. It tasted like motor oil, my legs started shaking after half a cup, and I still can’t get the taste out of my mouth. Sweet jeebus.

At any rate, Go Steelers!

*** Update ***

With Allah as my witness, I thought today was Sunday. I told you this coffee was strong.

Open Thread: The New Crazification Factor

by Anne Laurie|  January 1, 20119:43 am| 87 Comments

This post is in: Election 2012, Open Threads

In an otherwise innocuous column reassessing Palin’s chances for the nomination in 2012, Nate Silver mentions an interesting statistic:

There aren’t a lot of moderates in the Republican base, and their numbers are declining somewhat. But there are some: 27 percent of Republicans identify as either moderate or liberal.

So… has identifying oneself as a Republican if one’s views are other than batshit conservative now indicative of a mild mental disorder?

New Year on the east coast. Flipping between the channels, I can’t tell who is slurring worse- Kathy Griffin or Dick Clark.

Yeah. I went there. We’re gonna start the New Year with the same heightened levels of dignity we’ve always had.
