Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Pandora is the greatest web service/mobile app ever.

Discuss.

Or whatever you want to talk about, like water polo.

EDIT:  This is fucked up: Berkeley, CA Police Chief sent one of his Sergeants to the home of a local reporter to request changes to a story.

Minutes after reading a late-night news story online about him that he perceived to be inaccurate, Berkeley Police Chief Michael Meehan ordered a sergeant to a reporter’s home insisting on changes, a move First Amendment experts said reeked of intimidation and attempted censorship.

Meehans’s actions were “despicable, totally despicable,” said Jim Ewert, general counsel of the California Newspaper Publisher’s Association. “It’s the most intimidating type of (censorship) possible because the person trying to exercise it carries a gun.”

Bay Area News Group reporter Doug Oakley said he was shaken by the 12:45 a.m. Friday knock on the door of his Berkeley home. He said at first he and his wife thought something was drastically wrong or perhaps that a relative had died.

Meehan apologized Friday.

When I was a kid, and through most of the 1990s, Berkeley was like the haven for hippiedom.  A couple of months ago Oakland PD rolls up on a bunch of peaceful protesters and beats the hell out of them and damn near kills a couple, and now this?  What the fuck is going on in the SF Bay Area?

Well Grooveshark is pretty awesome too.

Am listening to “The Boston Monkey” by Otis right now.

But yes, Pandora is very very good. They play me songs that I had never heard before, which I can then listen to whenever I like on Grooveshark (including on my phone, thanks to the Xmas present my brother got me). Spotify reportedly improves on Grooveshark, but I have like 100 playlists saved already, so I haven’t made the switch.

If you were wanting a more descriptive answer than “I am” I’ll start by telling you that only God got away with that answer, if you believe that sort of thing.
As for me, I live in Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma, home of the Sooners, and for 21 years in the regular Army and the Army Guard I was an Infantry Soldier, aka a grunt.
I blog about Veterans issues, and military issues, when I bother to actually stick to anything approximating a theme. Mostly I blog about random things that interest me.

So do we have any legal eagles who would like to disabuse me of the thought that just shutting your mouth at a DUI checkpoint actually works? Not that I would have to worry about such things. But, growing up in the South, somehow I figured the cops would just find a reason.

Also, too, may I recommend the ‘Ball and Biscuit’ channel on Pandora. My flavor has lots of Betty Davis, which is always nice.

I get what you’re saying, but please hear me out: I really enjoy working in that stark black/white mode with a bit of shading…which might make it seem challenging to portray black people, UNTIL one considers that “white” people are not “white” either, but all kinds of shades of tan/brown/beige/auburn, you name it.

So in this series, in which almost everyone (I cheated on Grace Jones and Dionne Warwick, and I think those pieces suffer for it) is portrayed with the white canvas surface as their skin color, I’m eliminating skin color altogether and focusing on features/lines/hair shape to portray the subject. And what could be more racially unifying than that? :D

I edited my original comment but time ran out and it didn’t save. My point, I think was that with the image you have, it’s straight up black and white. Rove is a POS, but the strategy of claiming your enemy’s strengths and portraying your own weaknesses as strengths is something that shouldn’t be ignored. SO while the right tears their head off about “not-President Blacky McBlackdark tongue-click son of Mohammed Black Panther reversed-racist Obama X Nig-CLANG!”, I think that a graphic portrayal of our guy shouldn’t be overly white-washed in its contrast. It should say, instinctively, something like “You’re goddamned right, I’m a black man. Guess what? Let me be clear, I. am. SANE!”

    That’s it.

    Cheers.

Also, Sooner, I’m not about to slam you for your state government, especially when I live in AZ. But it can’t be called nut-picking if the right-wing loon preacher gets a standing ovation from fellow right-wing elected loons.

@Little Boots: For you, Little Boots. From my fake-hubby #1. You’re welcome.

@Omnes Omnibus: Night, OO. Sleep well. I will own the night for you.

Berkeley hasn’t been a “haven for hippiedom” in many years, and neither has Santa Cruz.

    @Spaghetti Lee:

Wait a damn minute, can you link video in your comments?

Only because I’m a front pager, sorry. The chance to embed videos and getting to delete the rare grossly sexist/racist/personal-attack-on-another-commentor comment are the only perquisites of the job… that I’ve been told about, anyways.

Apparently, you are not a 33rd degree Front Pager

@Arm The Homeless: Rule #1. Do not blow into that balloon and no blood tests. We won 98% of cases where they had no physical evidence. Rule #2. Don’t do anything. Don’t walk the line. Don’t touch your nose. Rule #3. Insist on a lawyer every time a question is asked or they ask you to do something. Rule #4. Always remember that you are being filmed. Sit still. Don’t talk.
    Rule #5. Remember Rule #3.

With over 750 members in our little local, I’ve had to practically teach a whole course on this matter. Over and over again.

@Ronzoni Rigatoni: Of course, this assumes you are really drunk LOL. Face it, you are going downtown anyway (in cuffs). But don’t give up hope LOL again.

i’d like to call your collective attention to this thread, where commenters claim they will vote for single-cell amoebae or cartoon characters over Obama.

And the premise of the post is entirely wrong.
Liberals dont want to marginalize Rush.
Karl Rove and Scott Brown want to marginalize Rush.

Hey! Jim Ewert (the attorney quoted in the Berkeley article) was a social science teacher and coach at my high school in the 1980s while he went to law school! Go coach!

Since I work nights, I’ve been through a lot of DUI stops. When they ask me where I’m going, and I say “I’m on my way to work”, they usually loosen up – they hate working nights too.
