Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

The revolution will be supervised.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I really should read my own blog.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Second rate reporter says what?

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

REPOST: Rachel Maddow’s Drift Giveaway

by Anne Laurie|  March 26, 20123:58 pm| 51 Comments

This post is in: Books, Military, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome

FacebookTweetEmail

As I said last night, thanks to Crown Publishing’s generosity, I have a signed hardback copy of Rachel’s book waiting for a lucky Balloon Juice reader.

I’ve updated the giveaway parameters slightly, at the suggestion of commentor Warren Terra and some others: WordPress willing, I’ll put up a third post this evening shortly after 7pm EDT, titled “CONTEST: Drift Giveaway“. Everybody who’s interested gets one entry, one comment. (Duplicate comments will get you eliminated.) The contest will stay open until Tuesday evening, so everyone should have a chance to enter. Then I’ll use a random number generator (my technical advisor, aka the Spousal Unit, has one he wrote for FRP gaming) to pick the number of the winning comment. (And many thanks to Cole and the website builder for rebuilding the comment-number function so you don’t have to trust my hand-counting!)

Looking forward to this evening…

Wait, I’m confused. So you comment on the thread that’s being posted tonight and then you’re randomly selected for the book? Does the content of the comment have anything to do with it? Does it have to be a good comment? Can it just be horseshit?

I am going to be real disappointed when the RNG picks one of the trolls. How do we keep DougJ from just proxying a bunch of his sockpuppets?

Somehow I doubt it’s an early number but it’s still too much fun watching them appear.

ETA, Ah, infinite regress as a contest. Liking this, I’m in an easily amused mood today.

I’m pretty sure my whining about the redesign disqualifies me. That, or being excessively earnest and somewhat of a thickie.

@Southern Beale: That’s what it sounds like. Personally I would also eliminate any comments complaining about the blog appearance, but that might not leave any entries.

Let me be the first to say that not only is Anne Laurie the best front-pager, but probably the finest, and most lovely blogger anywhere.

@Raven: Just saw your comment about the chicken man. He lived two miles from me. Roswell has a lot of regulations including tight restrictions on tree removal. (hopefully not pines, hehehe) Betty Price is on the city council and we all know how her husband Rep.Tom Price loves the attention Fox news bestows on him. In other words we’re a bunch of hypocrites.

Does it have to be a comment on topic or can it be any old comment, including bitching about the site redesign and/or trolling.

What I really like about Rachel, is her admitting on air, she was wrong with some of her handwringing hysteria that Obama was getting ready to sell out the farm. And didn’t. Easily the smartest person in the pundit room. All class, even when wrong on occasion.

To be clear – commenting on THIS thread does not count as an entry, right? We comment on the thread tonight to enter?

I actually am happy to buy a copy and send more money Rachel’s way…but at the same time, a signed copy would be awesome. I met her once and have a photo of myself at the front of a crowd greeting her, but have always rued that I didn’t either get a pic posing with her or get her to sign something, just for a more sentimental memento :)

I understand that commenting more than once will disqualify you for the drawing.

This is a wonderful opportunity for those of us without optimism. We can talk about folks who already have their one comment in the thread and they will be loathe to defend themselves.

I love the idea of this book. I’m sure that Rachel isn’t the first to examine this trend, but she must be the most high-profile person to do so. And it’s a critical question: why the F are we constantly at war? I think the short answer is: because we can (we have the money, technology, self-righteousness, etc.).

    So kudos to her.
