As I said last night, thanks to Crown Publishing’s generosity, I have a signed hardback copy of Rachel’s book waiting for a lucky Balloon Juice reader.
I’ve updated the giveaway parameters slightly, at the suggestion of commentor Warren Terra and some others: WordPress willing, I’ll put up a third post this evening shortly after 7pm EDT, titled “CONTEST: Drift Giveaway“. Everybody who’s interested gets one entry, one comment. (Duplicate comments will get you eliminated.) The contest will stay open until Tuesday evening, so everyone should have a chance to enter. Then I’ll use a random number generator (my technical advisor, aka the Spousal Unit, has one he wrote for FRP gaming) to pick the number of the winning comment. (And many thanks to Cole and the website builder for rebuilding the comment-number function so you don’t have to trust my hand-counting!)
Looking forward to this evening…
Wait, I’m confused. So you comment on the thread that’s being posted tonight and then you’re randomly selected for the book? Does the content of the comment have anything to do with it? Does it have to be a good comment? Can it just be horseshit?
Unlike some of the weenies here, I loves me some Rachel!
Arm The Homeless
I am going to be real disappointed when the RNG picks one of the trolls. How do we keep DougJ from just proxying a bunch of his sockpuppets?
Somehow I doubt it’s an early number but it’s still too much fun watching them appear.
ETA, Ah, infinite regress as a contest. Liking this, I’m in an easily amused mood today.
I’m pretty sure my whining about the redesign disqualifies me. That, or being excessively earnest and somewhat of a thickie.
@Southern Beale: That’s what it sounds like. Personally I would also eliminate any comments complaining about the blog appearance, but that might not leave any entries.
Random number generator?
Why not just use random.org?
I’d love a copy of Rachel’s book! I’m a pretty random kind of person, I should be just right for a random number generator!
I would like to win this book, please.
Let me be the first to say that not only is Anne Laurie the best front-pager, but probably the finest, and most lovely blogger anywhere.
@Raven: Just saw your comment about the chicken man. He lived two miles from me. Roswell has a lot of regulations including tight restrictions on tree removal. (hopefully not pines, hehehe) Betty Price is on the city council and we all know how her husband Rep.Tom Price loves the attention Fox news bestows on him. In other words we’re a bunch of hypocrites.
Does it have to be a comment on topic or can it be any old comment, including bitching about the site redesign and/or trolling.
Nice comment numbers.
The page is still wide for me on FF and I don’t know why. No other website is wide.
General Stuck (Bravo Nope Zero)
What I really like about Rachel, is her admitting on air, she was wrong with some of her handwringing hysteria that Obama was getting ready to sell out the farm. And didn’t. Easily the smartest person in the pundit room. All class, even when wrong on occasion.
General Stuck (Bravo Nope Zero)
Teehee. eemom bait.
I’m 100% gay but Rachel always makes me think I could reconsider someday. I doubt she feels that way about me though.
Random numbers are too important to be left to chance.
Delworking yet? Bold? Ital?
Is it working in a block?
Is it working in a code?
Delworking yet? Bold? Ital?
ETA: Huzzah! Code working as per tin!
Fucking flattery, how does it work? You would have been road kill at the court of Louis XIV.
@Maude: Wide? It’s too narrow for me. Fixed at 1100px.
To be clear – commenting on THIS thread does not count as an entry, right? We comment on the thread tonight to enter?
I actually am happy to buy a copy and send more money Rachel’s way…but at the same time, a signed copy would be awesome. I met her once and have a photo of myself at the front of a crowd greeting her, but have always rued that I didn’t either get a pic posing with her or get her to sign something, just for a more sentimental memento :)
Oh, you fixed the center justification thingie. Yay.
And thanks for the comment numbers and FP’er byline at top of post. Looks good.

Just Some Fuckhead
I think we should rassle for it.

@scav: Ok, trickier one
what will appear between? oh and tm(tm) r(r) c(c)
7 pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time? Greenwich Mean Time? American Samoa? West Coast minds want to know.
I would like to have the book, but I am not in the US…
Here’s hoping the quality of the comment doesn’t hinder our chances of winning…
Well, if you (or another non-US commentor) enters & wins, I’ll mail you the book. Whether it ever reaches you will be in the hands of your postal service.
I don’t think the contest is limited to the US. Actually, the first post made it fairly clear it isn’t.
haha, heres my favorite comment evan.
one that you deleted when you “sin-banned” me.
during OWS week at BJ, aws said…
and i said…..
You can have your service all my service and schedule something – let’s write it in pencil.
I’d like to read Maddow’s book for free.
Kind of you to offer. I roll against the Gazebo.
The WHITE Gazebo.
I love soccer and so did Rachel.
Yes, please and thank you.
I understand that commenting more than once will disqualify you for the drawing.
This is a wonderful opportunity for those of us without optimism. We can talk about folks who already have their one comment in the thread and they will be loathe to defend themselves.
Such mischief we could do!
I would dearly love to receive one of Rachel’s books! (and yes, that sucking up sound you hear is coming from my keyboard)
Who’s the big winner? I’m the big winner!
Hope Rachel’s book hits NYT best seller list!
I love the idea of this book. I’m sure that Rachel isn’t the first to examine this trend, but she must be the most high-profile person to do so. And it’s a critical question: why the F are we constantly at war? I think the short answer is: because we can (we have the money, technology, self-righteousness, etc.).
So kudos to her.
May the random number generator be ever in your favor!
Goddess, I’m a nerd.
Who else is betting that Spousal Unit’s “random” number generator thingy miraculously generates Spousal Unit’s comment?
Uh huh. That’s what I thought.
