Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

No one could have predicted…

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Second rate reporter says what?

    There’s this anime I’m really enjoying on Hulu called Robotics;Notes. It kind of starts out as a comedy/drama about school life, then crazy stuff starts happening. What really stuck me though, is that in the middle of all the genre craziness are the moments of genuine tenderness. There’s this other funny one called Girls und Panzer, set in an alternate world where it’s considered especially ladylike for girls to develop true poise by being tank commanders (men are not allowed to drive tanks), and the story is set in one of these tank clubs.

    Pot au feu didn’t quite go as planned, made boulettes instead.

    Just learned via Kos that Michelle Shocked launched an anti-gay tirade during a concert in San Francisco. Audience apparently walked out. Such a … shock. She was a lefty progressive (in her own words) “skateboard punk rocker,” but she got born again a few years ago and I guess it led to this. “Anchorage,” “I’ve Come a Long Way,” “Graffiti Limbo” … never be able to listen to them the same way again.

    Just a couple of years ago she did a couple of small benefit concerts for the progressive non-profit my wife works for, and after one of the shows we talked to her for a few minutes. She was intense, sincere, incredibly nice. I’m totally pole-axed by this. She had mental health problems in her youth, so maybe …

    But I’m probably giving her too much benefit of not much doubt.

    it is. I can’t walk by his little bed without haivng my heart break. His brother is hanging around mystified as to what happened to his companion. And yes, so happy I get to keep my foot :)

    @schrodinger’s cat: Thank you, a lot!

    @pacem appellant: sorry to hear this, such a feeling of violation.

    @Valdivia: I haven’t posted this in a while:

    We who choose to surround ourselves
    with lives even more temporary than our
    own, live within a fragile circle;
    easily and often breached.
    Unable to accept its awful gaps,
    we would still live no other way.
    We cherish memory as the only
    certain immortality, never fully
    understanding the necessary plan.

    Bill O’Reilly’s marriage was ruined by marriage equality. Clearly, such a solemn and dignified institution can’t withstand a cultural assault by men wearing Chanel gowns…

    http://gawker.com/5990571/bill-oreillys-divorce-is-so-ugly-god-got-involved

    And here’s where it gets interesting. In October 2011, McPhilmy took O’Reilly to court after learning that the woman she thought had been a neutral therapist serving the needs of her children was in fact a member of her ex-husband’s household staff. The therapist, a Long Island licensed social worker named Lynne Kulakowski, was working long days and some evenings in O’Reilly’s house, on his payroll, and basically acting as the children’s nanny.

    @Hungry Joe: I used to work at an office that had a communal CD player. Every now and then I would bring in a Mary Chapin Carpenter CD until one of the women at work walked over and shut it off. When I asked her why she said that she’d rather listen to Michelle Shocked. I’ve hated Michelle Shocked ever since. I was going to print a copy of the crappy write-up that she got in the Rolling Stone Album Guide and set it on her desk.

    I’m actually glad to see that she’s screwing up royal in public. She always was a self-serving soapboxer.

    @pacem appellant: My house was burglarized twice in one summer and it SUCKS. I got a lot of my stuff back but the feeling of violation is awful. I have a home alarm system now but I still have a lot of stuff hidden.

    Since this is an open thread, a question for kitteh experts. My big orange girl kitteh, aged 10 has had several bouts of upset stomach off late. I feed her 50% wet food, 50% dry food. The vet could not find anything wrong with her, and no parasites in the stool sample. Any suggestions, diet, herbal remedies etc.

    I’m so sorry, but it sounds like you did the right thing. Sometimes they need a little help even when they’re ready to go.

    @schrodinger’s cat:

    Our oldest kitty Keaton seems to be allergic (or at least sensitive) to wheat gluten, which is in most commercial cat foods. We now give them Blue Buffalo Wilderness (duck flavor) and different wheat-free wet brands like Innova, Wellness, BFF, and Soulistic (which is a Petco house brand).

    It’s pretty easy to spot — it’s usually in the first couple of ingredient lines. Staying away from it really helped a lot with the puking problem.

    @geg6: Hi, geg6… Omnes Omnibus answered your question a few comments after you made yours, so you now know who Vonn is. My wife and I reconnected our TV just for the Winter Olympics so our daughter (then 9) could enjoy the spectacle and a bit of grrrrrl power. Vonn was pretty indominatable; her fierce competitive spirit was inspiring. Seeing her now hanging with Woods sort of tarnishes her stature (at least in my mind).

    I had a friend whose opinion and honesty I valued. She said she was at a party and was standing and chatting with another guest. She said Woods was at the party and came passing through the doorway where my friend stood. Woods’ bodyguards (or flunkies or entourage) came barrelling through, knocked my friend to the floor, and Woods flowed by. He didn’t even deign to glance down at her. For that reason and all the stories I’ve heard since, I’ve never liked or respected Woods.

    And this is perhaps an eccentric observation, but I also wish he would completely close his mouth; why is his goddamned mouth always perpetually open? I don’t like the mouth-breather look.

    @pacem appellant:

    My home was burgled last Thursday while I was at work. It was a sloppy thief, but s/he took enough.

    I have had my house robbed 2 times. Both times it pissed me the hell off that some stranger stood in my house and said to himself “Hey, I think I’ll take this!”

    Once it was my wedding rings that my mother-in law gave me (that were hers, back in the day) and once (among many other things) a pair of ancient gold boat earrings that I am sure the idiots had no idea of the value.

    Prolly melted them down for the gold.

    Stuff that meant a lot to me and nothing to them/him/whoever.
