Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I really should read my own blog.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Republicans do not trust women.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

You cannot shame the shameless.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

This blog will pay for itself.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

There was an odd little flash of wingnuttery on the Interwebs over the weekend. What amounted to wingnut fanfic about the new Pope was posted to a diocesan web site (Sanford, UK) for about an hour before being taken down.

The upshot seems to be that the wingnuts are trying to convince everyone that the new Pope is Rush Limbaugh in a Pope hat for some reason. They really, really, really, want to believe this.

The Telegraph blog was on it.

P.S. Found this on Free Republic (duh) and Freepers were split as to its legitimacy. One Freeper noted that the fictional journalist claimed to have gone to the same schools as Chris Matthews. Nice catch.

What cost was exacted from you, sitting your fat ass in a swivel chair at a wingnut intellectual chop-shop while kids are still staggering around the wards without legs and arms, or the cognitive functions to get them through the day? What price did you pay? You have to send out for lunch one day? Show me the butcher’s bill for the Perle household, you vampire son of a bitch.

Since this is an open thread, I’ll say this: I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix (her mother was full blooded) and did not know nor have a clue as to what the father might have been. Last year when JC’s sister was fostering a RR mix, he put up a picture and asked what the dog might be and someone in the thread replied Ridgeback/Black Mouth Cur. After doing some research on BMCs, I am convinced that is what I have. And she is the best dog I’ve ever had.

It’s especially weird to me that wingnuts are all exercised that they went to the Atlantis in a group, because for a “luxury resort,” it’s not actually all that expensive (seriously, $199 a night for an all-inclusive? And they probably got a group discount on top of that).

    March 25, 2013 at 3:31 pm

@Mnemosyne: Yeah, I was going to say that too. The Atlantis resort isn’t exactly the most expensive, exclusive resort on the Bahamas. It’s the kind ordinary families go to because there are lots of activities for the kids and it’s not too expensive. The Obamas could have picked a much more expensive place for their daughters if they had wanted.

    March 25, 2013 at 3:35 pm

@Arm The Homeless: In all seriousness, I have to wonder if this is a prosecutable violation of some kind. It’s not as though this is simply a case of the other vacationers at that resort texting their friends back home and saying “Hey, guess who we saw in the lobby this morning.” This is a (supposed) mass communication outlet pinpointing the girls’ location. I should think that, at the least, the odious schmucks at Breitbart would receive a less-than-friendly phone call from the humorless guys in the black suits for their trouble.

    March 25, 2013 at 3:45 pm

@Hill Dweller: Whenever I think about this, it just makes me sad. Here we are, looking at what in many ways is the Camelot that the Kennedys, and the nation, never really got to enjoy — a young, smart, glamorous family in the White House who serve as an inspiration to millions around the nation at a time of economic and international difficulty and uncertainty. One of the most brilliant and charismatic presidents in history. A FLOTUS who’s right up there with Jackie in the glamour department and Hillary in the smarts department (and quite possibly surpassing them). A couple of kids who can’t help but be America’s little sweethearts, just like Caroline and John-John were. And so many people in this nation not only not recognizing it, but actively and viciously rejecting it.

Oh well. I loves me some First Family to pieces, and the haters can all go to hell. History won’t be kind, though, in judging how this nation treated one of its most splendid First Families ever.

@The Moar You Know: Us too! Our first dog together was a Newf-retriver cross with a brown coat.

170 pounds of love and slobber. He would chase the tennis ball in the choppy waters off the dock until I stopped throwing from weakness. Then he slept 23 hours. I owned a light truck at the time and found a car wash that had a gentle warm setting, so each of these play sessions cost me $1.75.

Although I should have sold tickets to the gathering crowd, as Bails amazed everyone by standing as told in the bed of the truck, waiting for the rinse cycle. He would then shake his entire body and jump off the tailgate and into the cab.

…Loved that dog. Tried to adopt another Newf, but the rescue said in our desert climes a Dane would be similar but happier in summer, and she’s great too.

For no good reason at all I perused Robert Zimmerman Jr.’s twitter excusathon for his brother Georgie. Short version: teh blahs are evil so it’s OK to shoot them.

Really late to this thread but I’m sooo relieved that a lot of people also thought that Max was encountering a buffalo or some other ungulate in that first pic.

I see Bachmann is in a bit of ethics trouble… How lovely! Don’t you think she looks tired?

Hey, it worked for the 9th Doctor with Harriet Jones… maybe it’ll work with Minnesota’s 6th District psycho!

    @? Martin:

You may be on to something. Sounds suspiciously like a propaganda tool aimed square at the heart of the Second Amendment. You don’t often see headlines that scream,
    Stabbed Dead! or Clubbed Dead!

For further proof, I offer this:

    usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/11/26/15460502-florida-man-who-died-in-cockroach-eating-contest-choked…

Notice the less inflammatory use of “To” and the less brutal “Death.”

I have a huge weakness for beef burgundy. The recipe I use is a Dutch Oven two day extravaganza of marinating, browning, sautéing, slicing and dicing, etc. While fun, I don’t always have time to do all that. I would love a recipe that approximates a quality Boeuf Bourguignon without quite so much effort?

    Cheers!
