Sigh:
Don’t blame me for this, blame the Great Orange Satan, which is where I found it.
Seriously, though, I bet nothing amuses Jay-Z more than being lectured on rap by a woman so white you can almost see through her. We white people just need to recognize we don’t have a really deep bench when it comes to rappers. I’ll give us Eminem and the Beastie Boys, and after that, you have to go back to Vanilla Ice (shudder). Beyond that, the only white rappers I can think of off the top of my head are Karl Rove and Dancing Dave Gregory and now Dana Perino with Greg Gutfield as hype man.
Like I said, it’s not a deep bench.

Just a reminder to everyone that Cuba policy expert Dana Perino had never heard of the Cuban Missile Crisis before her husband explained it to her. And she only asked him because someone asked a question that involved it during a press conference and she didn’t know what it was.

Left completely untouched in this nontroversy (as per usual in any discussion of the Cuban Embargo) is that the embargo probably has more to do with protecting U.S. business interests than with somehow undermining Cuban communism. I’m sure Big Tobacco and Big Sugar both lobby heavily to keep the embargo running, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the AMA doing the same in order to cut down on medical tourism.

well see Raven’s review. But I think that the movie gives enough of a sense about how the referendum won. I have spoken with quite a few of my friends who were activists back then and they all saw the movie as a good thing. Whatever its faults. No movie on a political subject can ever be perfect. I think for some reason those on the left have mode more movies about what it was like to live under the dictatorship and those movies are incredible and worth watching. Just because this one is made by someone who is not a hard core leftist does not make the movie a good one.

Yeah. Absolutely. This is how they got the referendum passed. First of all the center of activity for many years were labor unions. Then the old political parties (which never really disappeared during the Pinochet era). Also–Catholic Church meetings–groups anchored under it. This didn’t start until the 80s obviously, once the regime had ‘normalized’ but there was activism. The referendum wouldn’t have taken place without coordination and activism.

I thought they were neat. When I was a kid in ABQ there was a boy who would bring a tarantula to school, and we would let it crawl all over our arms and legs. I thought that was cool.
We used to get rattlesnakes on our old farm in San Diego (I once stepped on a baby rattlesnake whilst barefooted) and we only killed them if they were right close to the house. Otherwise, it was live and let live. We did have a couple of dogs who got bitten by rattlesnakes, and after the first couple of times (and many large vet bills later) we just kept track of WHERE they had been bitten (closer to the head or heart is bad) and let them work it out. All survived.
I just don’t stress too much about spiders and snakes and scorpions (had experience with THEM, too! in Tucson). Just stay out of their way, if possible.

jumping spiders are cool.
once had one living in base of my bedside lamp.
late one afternoon, we lured houseflies to the bedroom by turning off lights in one room while turning them on in the next. the flies followed the light from the kitchen into the den into the hallway into the bedroom.
turned the lamp on and i set the lid to a cottage cheese container by the lamp as bait.
the flies buzzed around, occasionally lighting to snack a bit.
eventually, the spider came out of the base of the lamp, waving its front legs, stalked and then stabbed a housefly in the head, dragged it into the lamp while the fly buzzed wildly.
the buzzing began to slow and went silent…

I used to have several fire-bellied toads, and would expend quite a bit of time crawling around on the porch scooping up crickets for them – also swooping a butterfly net over piles of dog poop for flies to feed them.
I smuggled them back on a plane to San Diego in a kind of deli container from a shop in San Francisco. I loved those little toads.
I found them after going to the ‘reptile’ shop with a friend in SF who had a Mexican burrowing toad – he would go there to buy baby rats to feed the toad, who otherwise would spend all its time under the sand in his tank thingy. Always seemed like a weird pet to have, to me.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Early warning systems for unhealthy homes?
Omnes Omnibus
@MomSense: If you have spiders, the air in your house is pretty good. If they start dying, look for mold or other crap.

Also in the “white rap” category:

There are others. Hip-hop has gone well beyond the black community now.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Cool. We do have spiders and I am always saving them from boys who want to squish them.

@Comrade Mary:
I never kill a spider I catch in the house – I always put them outside. But plenty of times I don’t bother catching them. They just want to eat some flies…

I’ll third the recommendation for The Streets, particularly their first two albums. Some cuts:
Turn The Page
It’s Too Late
Dry Your Eyes
Bobbo
To be fair Debra Harry and Blondie brought rap to a wider (also whiter) audience back in the day with “rapture”

@efgoldman: Not being able to remember a historical event does not absolve one from not knowing about it. Any person of any age who is decently educated should know about the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis regardless of whether they were “before their time” or not.

@MikeJ: They’re not random persons off the street? I did not know that.

Came to post this. Left happy somebody beat me to it.

This is how it is done. And here’s his target. Be sure to watch Straight Outta Surrey, too.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
I’d add House of Pain to that list but it still doesn’t make a full team much less a deep bench.

@Wayne t: Seconded on 3rd Bass. Serch and Prime Minister Pete Nice were legit.
Among other things, they gave a young MF DOOM his first big break, as a guest vocal on “The Gas Face”.

I think knowing what the Bay of Pigs is should be a prerequisite for anyone looking to comment in defense of the Cuba embargo.
Come to think of it, I really hope Jay-Z releases a track called “Bay of Pigs” about these imbeciles.

@JR:
Fixed.

Had to delurk because almost 200 comments into a white rapper thread nobody’s mentioned Brother Ali.
Hell, he’s an albino so he’s even whiter than Perino.

Sorry John, I love you man, but you are completely ignorant about hip-hop. Your knowledge of it doesn’t penetrate the most superfluous radio bullshit, so best not to even bother going there. There are a TON of great white MCs who are well-respected within the genre.
Most prominently, El-P, founder of one of the most respected hip-hop labels of the 2000s, Def Jux
Aesop Rock
Cage
Slug
Brother Ali
Despot
RA the Rugged Man
Vinnie Paz
Edan the Humble Magnificent
Sage Francis
That’s just off the top of my head. Stick to the Grateful Dead, my man.
