What are we doing tonight? I’m so unprepared for a Friday night I’m just sitting here watching the Pirates lose to the Reds. Walt is sick, the Ills are awol, and have not heard from the Deal’s or Holly or Harry and Chatman, so looks like it’s you and me, folks. My brother is in town and we watched the game for a bit, but he had to go home and put the dogs in their crates.
I guess Bill Maher is on at ten. Anything else happening? The sports scene is just dead.

I liked it, but it seriously was one of the worst-marketed films I’ve ever seen. I had no idea until about 15 minutes in that it was a comedy — all of the ads sold it as a straight sci-fi.
One of my favorite underrated movies is The Frighteners (from a post-Heavenly Creatures but pre-LOTR Peter Jackson). It starts off as a comedy and turns into a supernatural thriller. There’s a plot twist about three-quarters of the way in that makes you wonder how the fuck they’re going to get out of the trap they’re in, but the writers make it work.

But I bet you do all that already.
Good luck.
Mnemosyne
@Redshirt:
It’s not a preventative, but considering how many ticks you’ve been attracting, your doctor may decide it’s worth it in case you’re already in the early stages.
Also, if DEET isn’t working for you, try picaridin. It’s been used in Europe for years and was only recently approved for use here. Plus it won’t melt your stuff like DEET does. It works great for some people and doesn’t work at all for others, so it’s worth a try.

My heart goes out to Oklahoma. Many of those folks haven’t even had the time to get back to normal from the last round of storms. The deaths and destruction are terrible. Slightly less terrible is losing power and having everything in the fridge go bad without having the means to restock or seeing the accumulation of a lifetime pounded into soggy paste. The accretion of “little” things like that can erode your soul, all the more when they happen again and again.

The Huffingtonpost guy on Maher tonight used the word Stalinist to describe Obama’s Republican healthcare plan. A few weeks ago Abby Huntsman, also from HuffPo, was on trying to put an overprivileged, youthful face on discredited wingnut economic policies. And this week, after a month of steady Obama bashing, they did a puff piece interview with GWB.

@mouse tolliver: Arianna follows the money. When hating Bush was profitable that’s what she did. Bashing Obamacare brings clicks? She’ll do more of that. Whatever makes her money and also allows her to maintain the illusion that she’s willing to challenge her side (politically), she’ll do. She likes being seen as edgy but she also wants that Davos invitation.

@Higgs Boson’s Mate: Why would we fix veterans? They volunteered, didn’t they?

@Studly Pantload, the emotionally unavailable unicorn: I do love the odd combos that sometimes emerge from the convention of Spouse+Nym– Mr. Iowaoldlady, I seem to recall for example, makes a good image– but somehow, “Mrs. Pantload” just made me snort aloud. Thanks!

@Violet: In other words, she’s lovely, but evil.
That’s how Al Franken always described her during his regular “Strange Bedfellows” segment on Maher’s old Comedy Central/ABC, pre-911 talk show, Politically Incorrect.
Why can’t Al Franken do more TV? I guess he’s standing on principle, or something. But his absence from the political talk show circuit is doing way more harm than good.

@Southern Beale: Well, I ask myself how often do they picture the spouse of a person in a position like this. Seems to me it’s hardly ever to never. Surely the person’s family composition has nothing to do with how well/ill they do their job?

@Omnes Omnibus:
Oh hell yes. I am adamantly opposed to an all volunteer military because it enables so many other bad things. I believe that our politicians would be much more careful about starting and protracting wars if going to war affected every one of us through the draft and pay as you go war taxes.
Going to war is damned serious business for those who do so. We are, I believe, in a time when they are the majority of those who appreciate just how serious it it.

@Violet:
Oh hell yes. Huffington for senate? Sister, please.

She’s buddies with Tina Brown, if that helps understand her oeuvre.

@trollhattan: She was a good beard. Then again, my rethug friends back in the 90’s thought the wrong Huffington ran.

Agreed, and couldn’t say it any better. It’s a national disgrace.
