My oldest nephew is a Junior at West Point, so all of my family is rooting for Army. My brother in law, both nephews and my oldest niece are at the game. Freezing. Having a blast. My little Sister is bitching because she had to stay and open their jewelry store.

Well, the Midshipmen of Navy are 7-4, and the Black Knights are 3-8. I think this Army-Navy game will go like the last 11 games.

Great song. For whatever reason I’ve always thought of it as a Tears for Fears tune, guess because it fits their style so well. This is my prototypical INXS song.
That is something you don’t often hear during a football game.

I’m a dog face and my old man was a Navy mustang, enlisted in WWII and became an officer after he got his degree. He loathed the Academy officers. He would sing. “What’s the color of horseshit, Navy Blue and Gold”!

@raven: I’ve not served myself. A few months ago my father wrote a book. About the military high school he went to. He is a man of few words, and to be honest I didn’t know much about it. Since I do web sites and such I said I could help promote it. So as you might guess he sent me a copy.
I have to admit I now understand so much of how I was raised. How things worked in my household as a kid. Being raised in a military family, well somewhat unique IMHO.
Kid’s in the midst of a soccer tourny–one match down three to go. And it’s COLD (California cold, but still). Think I miss rec league–eight matches and done ’til next fall.

Michael Hutchence: a perfect example of self-reliance gone too far.
@Tommy: When my sis and I were kids he’d take us hiking in the Puente Hills above Whittier. We’d take 22’s and shoot at random shit. One time he got us in a place between two boulders that had corrugated roofing across them. He was bouncing big rocks of them and yelling “if you stay put you are safe”. It puzzled me but he was pretty nuts. Years later we talked about him being pinned down on the beach at Corregidor and the paratrooper that got hit when he took off running. Made prefect sense.

@raven: KMI (Kentucky Military Institute) back in the 50s. No longer around. The title of the book is Character Makes the Man, which was the motto of the school. I find it an interesting read, but what is more stunning is seeing the folks that order it. They are like a who’s who of stellar folks. The school clearly did something right.
My family is split into both branches (plus the Marines), and I find myself pulling for Army this year. A decade is long enough to go without beating a rival.
@raven: Both my grandfathers served in WWII. Honestly I had no idea what they did. When one of them passed away my dad and I got to read his letters he sent home to my grandmother. I feel safe saying he was a stud, a hero. He did things I can only hope if called to service I would do. He was a HUMP flight surgeon. He tells the story of being told he would most likely die and that he needed to learn to fly, cause there could come a time where he was the only person on said plane able to bring it home.
@Tommy: I knew a guy who drove over the mountains in the CBI. There were places where the drove huge poles into the side of cliffs to make part of the road. He came home and never left Georgia again. I have a bunch of the letters my stateside folks wrote to my dad in the Pacific and he kept all my letters from Korea and Vietnam. It’s funny to read them from time-to-time.
It is after all, the Navy & Marine Corps that guarantee our freedom. The Army are for mopping up & brutal occupations. (No one can figure what the AIr Force does, but they all love Jesus & will be happy to tell you about it.)

@raven: Yes I am. There is a III after my name. I’ve tried to post my email here and it never works, cause if I could I’d forward you the book in e-Book format. I got like 47 of them left to give out. I keep telling my dad folks might want it in this format, but he says “we’re old, we don’t read books that way.” I keep saying things like “there is this thing call the Internet” and “old folks have a tablet, even if you don’t.”
I was looking for you last night. They have some puppies at the animal shelter that jeffreyw’s wife works/volunteers at that you may be interested in — they’re lab/border collie mixes. You can see a photo at this blog entry (black-and-white puppy). IIRC, you guys are both downstate, but I’m not sure how far apart.
@raven: I saw that! Today I went to a remembrance of the victims of gun violence put on by Mayors against illegal guns, it was held at the Unitarian Church near where I live It was non political except for about a minute and even that was a list of laws expected to be introduced by the legislature.

How about we disband the U.S. Army, disband the U.S. Navy, try their leaders for war crimes, and end professional sports?
That would be a lot better plan than “Go Army! Go Navy!”

Good Lord. Just turned on the TV and saw the weather at the game. What is that on the field–ice? What a mess!
Emceed a concert in NYC during the 70s where the power to the stage went out. But not completely, as some lighting was still on. (Not in a stadium-type venue; was in a large auditorium/ballroom in a well-known hotel.)
The drummer covered for close to 15 minutes until power was restored. And the audience, so help me, never knew anything was amiss.

Across the street from me they’re building a new house. They’ve framed it out and wrapped it in Tyvek. They punched holes in the Tyvek for windows and such, but those aren’t installed yet. Today it’s really windy and the Tyvek is blowing around in the wind. It’s making a racket. Driving me batty.
Storm front moving in – thunderstorms predicted later through weekend.
